In my opinion, I think bans/suspensions/etc. should be business of those involved, and shouldn't be news for the forum

I was just using it as a time period to refer to.

I think bans should get longer for each offense. Maybe the first time 5 days, the next time 10 days? I did learn my lesson from a week's suspension, but I guess some people do not.

    Re: Talk to the Moderators

Below is the rules list for a popular movie/ entertainment forum I visit. They are VERY strict about their rules, and won't hesitate to ban people who are too immature or who insult other posters. It is probably the best run and most fun to post on because I know that there is little if any drama or crap going on.

BTW, this site has over 44,000 members and 2.9 million posts.

    1) You do not disrespect, insult or put down your fellow movie fan on our board. Civil debates only.

    2) You MUST be at least 15 years of age to join our board. Even if you're older than that, we expect you to post constructively, maturely and with sense. Basically, post with some weight behind it. If you've joined just to crack wise...you will be banned.

    3) Think before posting!
    A) Post in the correct forums
    B) DO NOT SPOIL movies for others (or include a *SPOILERS WARNING* if you do)
    C) Don't post items that are already there (use search function)
    D) Always respond with more than just two words
    E) DON'T WRITE IN ALL CAPS

    4) Our board is for MOVIE TALK only. If you bring personal issues up on our board, you will be banned. If you discuss your ex-girlfriend, you will be banned. If you announce your comings and goings or gossip about so-and-so, you will be banned. If you can't handle the fact that someone in the world has an opinion that DIFFERS from yours maturely, you will be banned. Use email/chat/PM or the ol' fashioned telephone to share your non-movie life with others. This is a movie board, this is not a place for you to discuss your personal life or boo-hoo about how your lover just broke up with you.

    5) NO ****IN' SPAMMING! If you're joining simply to plug your own site, you will be banned.

    THE BOTTOM LINE

Just be cool with everyone on the board, respect other posters, the moderator and the administrators of the site, follow the basic guidelines and we will be cool with you. We're all here to have fun and discuss our love of movies with one another, and if you're down with that...welcome aboard!!

** WE RESERVE THE RIGHT TO KICK ANYONE OFF AT ANYTIME **

We do not give out warnings on our board. If you break the rules to which you have agreed above, you will be BANNED for life. We also reserve the right to kick anyone out who's cocking around for no reason. Don't waste our time, and we won't waste yours.

They also don't put up with people asking about why this or that poster was banned.

Yea, that's the way that most forums operate. This forum has been different from the start, and I don't really see a need to change that. That style of draconian rules is what I was referring to earlier, though.

I think we could use a little bit of this in our forum. Not necessarily in the form of a rule but just in common sense

NOTHING constructive comes from an insult. You can debate, disagree, even argue without resorting to insults.

There are some pretty serious discussions that go on here. Sometimes they get pretty heated. But it only gets ugly when someone resorts to name calling or insults.

I've been nearish to the center of a few of these discussions, and have tried (and probably failed if I reviewed every post I've ever made) to state my point without resulting to insults. I've been called names and bit my tongue. I try not to spew insults, but I'm not perfect.

Do a quick search for your favorite insult. Idiot, *****, Dumbass, etc...There are a lot of insults flung about in here. Be it insulting another poster, a GM, a player, a politician, a historical figure, a mythological being...insulting somebody only speaks badly about yourself.

I have a philosophical view point that the ONLY thing anyone can talk about, EVER, is themselves. No matter how hard you try to be objective, you are really only giving your view point. The subject being discussed is taken in by your brain, sliced and diced and molded by your unique perception and spit back out by your mouth (or fingertips). If the only words that come out after that process are 'idiot' or '*****'...that doesn't reflect too well upon you.

That is a great point. We do have some great debates on here, and if we can lower the insults, it could make a huge difference. I know I throw some around, but there are better ways to describe something without an insult.

I quote myself after reading the I'm a Published Writer thread which has turned into yet another RSR/Metsguy bickering thread.

Somehow, "super moderators" (moderators with mod powers in all forums) have been switched to registered users. Clay and Dee know about the issue but are swamped with other things right now..

I think insults should warrant a ban. But thats it as far as conduct goes.
