    Youk
    Pedroia
and I think Paps is next.
If elsbury shines this year look for them to lock him up next year.
Drew is locked up for a while and if they could ever grab one of the catchers from texas they would be in real good shae I think

Everyone talks about the yanks this year... sometimes the move not made... is the best move you can make...

Well, who's a better option? Also, RSR said ONE of the catchers from Texas .

Exactly. Teagarden or Max Ramirez could possibly become even better. Potentially a Ted Simmon's esque player in Teagarden's case, and so far, I would say Max Ramirez could become a cross between Tek and Pudge

Varitek for starters. Heck, Bard is more proven. Salty was poor last season when given a significant opportunity, and Teagarden and Ramirez have had a cup of coffee in the majors which although was decent, ....I just don't understand why Sox fans are so confident they are the answer for 2008.

This is a veteran team designed to win this year. Pinning all hopes on such young catchers not only developing into offensive threats, but also properly handling a veteran pitching staff is not only dangerous but it can also be very irresponsible.

I'm not happy with Bard...and I don't mind obtaining one of these Ranger 'prospects' if the Sox don't have to give up too much to acquire one....but its reckless to depend on one to handle the staff in 2008. Another option is necessary, and that in the end may mean Varitek.

Tek screwed himself not accepting arbitration. The sox better not be too greedy however because losing him without a realistic alternative is very risky.

I agree with dickay on this one...it doesn't make any sense to come in to the year with a team primed to win NOW...and then shove a kid catcher in behind home plate for 110 games.

But Teagarden and Salty should both do well this year, if all works out, and Varitek costs more and will likely produce less. And Bard is very overrated, as he can't throw or walk

what makes you think they "should both do well"? They are prospects at a very demanding position who are completely unproven. I wouldn't mind them splitting somewhat with Tek as Tek is insurance but handing over a veteran rotation to a kid is asking for trouble.

    Curt Schilling chimes in

    http://38pitches.weei.com/general/what-about-tek/

It’s not exactly the best study, but in the past 14 years, of the 28 World Series teams, three have made it with their starting catcher being a first-year to the organization guy, none with rookies as starters and no team with two new catchers to the organization.

The biggest problem I have though, is Sox fans drinking too much coolaid. Theres a flip side....rather than believe the hype that the Sox badly want one of these catchers, maybe consider that they are not even a 1st, 2nd, or 3rd option for the Sox. They've tried to acquire Russell Martin, the D-Backs catcher, Tek and probably others. And they haven't yet even made a serious offer so I question how confident BoSox management is that these Ranger catchers are the answer. If they have shown such little confidence, why are the fans so sure?

Based on what? There is really next to no track record for EITHER of them as a major leaguer to base that assumption on.

Now, if you wanna get one of them and give him a chance to COMPETE with Bard and either Tek or some other vet, fine...that's SMART. To just grab one of them and say "Here you go, unproven kid...you're starting." would be utter stupidity.

David Pauley is gone! Shipped to Baltiore for Randor Bierd. Who?

Arggh!! Not our 9th starter!! Arrrgh!

Pauley wasn't great, but his record in AAA was very good last year...why trade him to Baltimore for this reliever? why are we trading anyone with only half a catcher and Julio Lugo on the payroll?

Obviously a minor move...and maybe not that bad of one...we are just stocking up the relievers. I guess we have depth, with Hansack/Zink/Bowden/Tazawa/Buchholz in the minors...just another Kason Gabbard-ish decent spot starter gone.

I'm guessing Pauley is out of minor league options, so rather than risk losing him on waivers, they sent him away and got something in return.

Pauley, a 25 year-old starter, posted a 3.55 ERA in 25 Triple A starts for Pawtucket in '08. The Sox designated him for assignment last Tuesday to make room for John Smoltz.
