I don't think the Twins would accept it though...they have a new stadium coming soon and Mauer is their stud. That said...he is making about 10+mil per the next couple years, and will demand near Texiera type coin&years for his next contract. I'd take a stab at it.

I tell you another the Sox should be considering and thats Andruw Jones. Talk about low risk, he won't cost much and the Dodgers would likely eat alot of the contract. Ellsbury is no guarentee in CF, Jones is a nice backup / 4th OF'er and if he turns to prior form would be a superb addition. Do it tonight
I'd stick Big Papi in the outfield before I let that guy in Fenway.

Yeah, that trade wouldn't happen. You can dream though! Oh, and Reyes is actually a FA, unless you are thinking of someone else?

The Twins wouldn't give Mauer up for anything less than the moon.

why? if you can get him for the last year of his deal at around 6-7 mil or so (LAD would easily eat half), he is still a solid defender who can play all OF positions. He can DH, and start in CF if Ellsbury struggles, needs a break or if Jones returns near prior form its a steal.

I realize he was horrific last year, but he's in a contract year now, you have him cheap and who knows?

He was in a contract year in 2007, too.

he was also far pricier 'than' then he is 'now'...the market gave him 2 years at 15 mil per at that time. The Sox can get him now for far less on a one year deal.

I'm just saying, the "contract year" part of it is relatively meaningless, except for the fact that they'd only have to commit to him for a year.

Jones, between bonus' still to be paid and salary, is owed, 22.5 million (16 base and 6.5 still to be paid for his bonus). just how much is LA willing to eat? espically if they can't get anything back?

    Re: Red Sox moves

Okay, back on topic - Red Sox make two new moves:
    1) Sign Rocco Baldelli as their 4th OF
    2) agree to terms with John Smoltz!!

Smoltz would probably rehab until June...wonder if he's insurance for the rotation, or looked at as bullpen?

    So the sox roster is:
    --Starters--
    SP Josh Beckett
    SP Jon Lester
    SP Daisuke Matsuzaka
    SP Tim Wakefield
SP Brad Penny, SP John Smoltz, or Masterson
    --Bullpen--
    L Javier Lopez (lefty specialist)
    R Manny Delcarmen
    L Hideki Okajima
    R Jonathan Papelbon (closer)
    --possible bullpen--
    R David Aardsma
    R Justin Masterson
    R Wes Littleton
    R Ramon Ramirez
    --OF--
    RF JD Drew
    CF Jacoby Ellsbury
    LF Jason Bay
    OF Rocco Baldelli
    --IF--
    SS Jed Lowrie
    SS Julio Lugo
    1B/3B Kevin Youkillis
    2B Dustin Pedroia
    3B Mike Lowell
    --C--
    C Josh Bard
    Brown/Kottaras/FA (Tek?)
    --DH--
    David Ortiz

I say, just hand over the championship now!!

Smoltz?!??! I know he is old and has some health problems, but he has been one of my favorite pitchers. I hope he does well!

I have been somewhat of a Smoltz fan also. As Boston fan, I wish they had signed him about 15 years ago. You have to wonder how much he has left in the tank, after pitching in only 6 games last year (although he did pitch well).

Kinda reminds me of the Sox getting Tom Seaver and Juan Marichal in the twilight of their careers.

    Sox get Kotsay back

Hello, 5th OF and backup 1B!! This guy wasn't so great last year but has potential - another incentive-laden deal, $1.5mil to start. He can get some hits.

Has anyone been near him in the outfield? this guy chews and spits so much, by the 6th inning there is a ring of crap around him in RF.
