I think people forget that Buchholz is still just 24.

It's good that Coco is gone now, so Jacoby won't have to be held back anymore for Coco to have playing time. Coco was great, but now Jacoby can play all the games he can.

And who do you believe will start at catcher next season?

Ellsbury played in 145 games and had 609 plate appearances....

Hopefully Salty, which could happen with the Penny deal. A prospect or two or something could be traded for him. Or Teagarden. Either one would be fine.

Everywhere, they have been talking about them online and NESN for a while, since way before Penny signed.

    Well

    Bucchulz is no gaurentee,

Wakefield has had back problems in the past and is only a year older

Masterson, as good as he was, showed it only one year, and for a young pitcher that is no sure thing

Daisuke missed time last year, and wore down at the end of the previous year

Beckett has missed time in 6 of his 7 seasons

Lester threw more than 150 innings fro the first time sibce AA ball last year.

Then counting that no pitcher is ever a sure thing the Sox have tended on having too many guys rather than not enough.

only red sox fans overrate him. I think he's a great prospect, has and has shown to have great stuff and most certainly I WOULD NOT give up on him so easily. I don't believe he's a bust yet by any means....but he's a prospect. So many want and think young players have to blossum immediately. Just two and a half years ago, Bucholz was everyones favorite while it was Lester red sox fans wanted traded (for the record, I've always maintained that I thought lester was a top of the rotation guy and I liked him better than buchholz )

Don't get me wrong, i'd deal buchholz if the right deal came along...i would have moved him for Santana no doubt, and Ichiro is intriguing....but I'm not about to give up on him.

I have to laugh how sox fans think Buchholz is overrated but don't think Ellsbury is

As for Salty......what makes people think is going to be a great MLB catcher??? He hasn't shown a ton in pro ball or the minors. Catchers are often harder to predict that pitchers, and I would most certainly not deal Buchholz straight up for Salty. I'd like to have a young catching prospect touted by scouts, but why is this guy the answer to our catching dilemma???????????

One more extremely valid point..........the last time the Sox felt they had "too many SP's" they went and traded Arrojo. How did that work out??? The Sox went on to have a tremendous amount of injuries in the rotation and plugged with no names and minor leaguers. Arroyo could have greatly helped.

Moral is, you can never have too many SP's, especially when young arms and older/injured pitchers are involved.

    Re: Red Sox moves

The move the Sox should consider is Buchholz, Masterson or Bowden, and a top offensive prospect (maybe even Lars) to Minn. for Mauer and Reyes. Maybe the sox could give Lugo to the twins and pay his salary, I think they need a SS?

I think with Buchholz, Masterson or Bowden, Lugo+cash & a good offensive prospect they could pull it off and keep Lars. Mauers contract escalates and will be pricey for the Twins to pay the next couple of years. I actually think this is alot for the Sox to give up, but to settle your catching problem for the next 5-7 years, its well worth it. Mauer is amongst if not the best in the game. Reyes is a super solid LH reliever who would equal the trade and be a very big asset to a strong pen.

That would be giving up WAY too much.

nah, its a starting pt for me. Mauer is the best in the game, and is like 25 or something. Buchholz, Masterson or Bowden, Lugo & cash, Kottaras, and a young talented offensive prospect (not lars) for Mauer and Reyes. Go do it tonight

I don't think the Twins would accept it though...they have a new stadium coming soon and Mauer is their stud. That said...he is making about 10+mil per the next couple years, and will demand near Texiera type coin&years for his next contract. I'd take a stab at it.

I tell you another the Sox should be considering and thats Andruw Jones. Talk about low risk, he won't cost much and the Dodgers would likely eat alot of the contract. Ellsbury is no guarentee in CF, Jones is a nice backup / 4th OF'er and if he turns to prior form would be a superb addition. Do it tonight
