Olaf Henriksen: The Viking Descended Outfielder

Olaf Henriksen (April 26, 1888 – October 7, 1962) is the only Danish-born person ever to play in Major League Baseball. He played seven seasons (1911 – 1917) for the Boston Red Sox (then also known as the Boston Americans) as a teammate of Hall of Famers Babe Ruth and Tris Speaker, among others, and he played a role in three World Series victories, namely in 1912, 1915 and 1916.
Defensively Olaf Henriksen solely played the outfield. His primary offensive skill was to get on base, and he recorded the second highest on-base percentage in modern baseball history among rookies with more than 100 plate appearances. He never showed much power, though, as he only had one career home run. Henriksen was mainly a bench player for the Red Sox, but he delivered a decisive hit against the famous pitcher Christy Mathewson in Boston's World Series victory in 1912.
    Henriksen's nickname was "Swede".
Olaf Henriksen is furthermore one of the only players to ever have pinch hit for Babe Ruth. On June 7, 1916, when Ruth had pitched 7 innings versus the Cleveland Indians, Henriksen was substituted into the game and got a base on balls, which ultimately tied the score at 1-1. The Red Sox won the game 2-1.

Re: Olaf Henriksen: The Viking Descended Outfielder

    Hej!

A few people have started doing dynasties based on individual players, and I (am a huge copycat) decided I'd throw my hat in that ring as well. I'm interested in all things Scandinavian right now and I've known about Olaf Henriksen for a while. Actually, ever since I took my Danish girlfriend to her first American Baseball game and she asked if any Danish people played baseball. I didn't know of any, and we got home and found that Olaf was the one and only.

Olaf played 7 seasons for the Boston Red Sox from 1911 to 1917. He appeared in 321 games and had a season's worth of at bats, 487. He hit .269/.392/.329 in those at bats.

I don't think this is all that Olaf had in him. After what would turn out to be his final season in 1917 he was released by the Red Sox. The New York Times apparently reported that he was discussing a contract with the Brooklyn Robins (later to become my beloved L.A. Dodgers) but never signed. Olaf's major league playing career was over. He became manager for Boston College and died in 1962.

    In this dynasty...

The Brooklyn Robins will sign Olaf after the (simmed) 1917 season. We'll see what would have happened.

Robin's games will be mostly played in PbP mode. The AI will make most of the decisions regarding trades, player signings, etc. I'm just there to report what happens and enjoy a little bit of Baseball Mogul

Just a few minor tweeks to the settings:

The game was begun in BM 2007, and the 1917 season was simmed in BM 2007. All other games will be played using BM 2010. This is because it appears that BM 2007 does a much better job of initially creating players.

Promotions will be set at 30/50/70/90.

Olaf will also be edited so that his projected retirement date is 1925 instead of 1917. The dynasty wouldn't be much fun if Olaf retired before it started...Now he is set to retire at 37.

The 1917 Season ended with the Boston Red Sox facing the Brooklyn Robins in the playoffs, coincidentally. Olaf's present team vs his future team.

The Red Sox take it in an amazing series that goes seven games.

Olaf is signed by the Robins. Here are his stats from last year.

He hangs around with some good company

Olaf looks like the Robins' #1 hitter off of the bench

Feel free to peruse the .mog. Familiarize yourself with the league and check out the awesome Player Card Photo Pack that Robinhoodnick put up. A must for anyone doing a historical sim, IMO.

Can't you call him Olav and pretend he's Norwegian?

Brooklyn Robins at New York Giants
    April 5, 1918

The first game of the season, against the arch-rival Giants, isn't what the Robins had in mind, playing nothing like last year. Three errors before a furious rally in the ninth inning. The Robins put the go ahead run across in the tenth when Hy Myers doubles in Zach Wheat.

But in the bottom of the inning George Kelly scored Benny Kauff and the game ends when pinch-hitter Tommy Griffith scores Frankie Frisch.

Humiliating. Utterly Humiliating, with a capital H. From NL Champions 6 months ago to this embarrassment. Three one-run losses to the Giants. Two of the wins of the walk-off variety.
