    Scouting Question

    Hello,

I have been given a scouting video and I need to identify what type of pitch is being thrown (note, it is of major league players from a television's perspective)...anyone have any suggested reading or videos that will help me out? I don't have much of a clue on how to identify a pitch!

    Thanks!
Why does everybody stand up and sing "Take Me Out to the Ballgame" when they're already there?

    Re: Scouting Question

I can pretty much identify 4 common types. Fastball if the pitch is fast (90's mph)and straight. Curveball if it slow (70's mph) and move down. slider if it move sideway. Change up if its straight and slow.

    Re: Scouting Question

Watch video of games online and a trusted broadcaster - someone that's been in ther batters box, but isnt full of hot air like Joe Morgan. A Jerry Remy, or whoever narrates your Oaklan games - call one up from the TiVo, and watch pitches come in.

Video games - Baseball Mogul in PBP mode, MLB Power Pros, some of the other MLB games too - they give you a great feel for movement, rotation, drop, speed change, etc.

Recommended reading #1: Sir Kodiak's Pitch Guide

    little/no movement, high speed: fastball
side-to-side movement, slightly slower speed: slider
pitch with fastball motion, but comes in ~15mpg slower with drop - changeup
pitch that curves 12-6 or 1-7 - curveball
fast slider with sharper movement - what Mariano Rivera throws - cutter

Have you pitched or played baseball before? Are you trying out for a scouting position or announcing job?

    Re: Scouting Question

Thanks for your help. I have played baseball but it was years ago. I am currently trying out for a ML video scouting position. I'd rather work on the business side, however this may be a way in. We'll see. Thanks again for your help.
