    MLB 2009 Sleepers

I was looking on MLB dot com at the top 50 prospects list today, who do you think are the impact sleepers in MLB for 2009?

David Price is a given. Cameron Maybin should be good. Matt Wieters looks like a stud. Colby Rasmus will probably be injured again all year.

Who do you like for a breakout season in 2009?

Lars Anderson IF he somehow gets a chance to start, Matt Weiters, Price, Maybin, and Chris Davis are good places to start. Lars could be at a MLB level, but is blocked currently, and could have Tex in his way soon, so actually, I would say he is iffy.

After only half a season at AA level, I don't know why so many Sox fans want to say this guy is MLB ready so soon. Give him a full season at AA+ and then bring him up if he performs. He's only 20 or 21....Sox fans overestimate their prospects nearly as much as yankee fans do.

Agreed. Anderson needs at least one more season in the minors.

Anyway, I think Price is going to have a very good year. Wieters and Maybin are up there too.

I'll go out on a limb and proclaim that this is Homer Baileys year to finally break out. Absolutely no statistical reason to think this, only the stats who have been proclaiming the past couple years that it was his time. I'll roll the dice with him this year.

Offensively, I am going to go with Carlos Gomez to become an MVP quality player this year. After a roller coaster season which he had a sub .300 OBP, I think classifying him in the 'sleeper' category is fair.

I'd agree with this if he gets out of Cincinatti.

    MVP quality?

Jose Reyes is a good offensive comp, and he did jump from crap to MVP quality in one year (from 2005 to 2006), but Reyes had better control over the strike zone to begin with (27:78 K:BB for Reyes compared to 25:142 for Gomez) and also exhibited a huge jump in plate discipline, something rare for players, and something I'd never predict for any player with a terrible K:BB ratio like Gomez.

I think Gomez will improve, and I foresee him posting some MVP-quality seasons in his future, but I don't see him making that huge jump this year.

I hope Homer does, that guy is awesome. And then we have Travis Snider, Chase Headley, Salty, maybe Teagarden if he gets traded.

Matt Carp? I'm not so sure how well he would perform at an MLB level.
