Japanese guy signed by Red Sox

Is that 3 yrs/$3M or 3 yrs/$3M/yr (total $9M)? Just need to know for my BM2k10 roster (whether it will be default or just a mod TBD at this time).

    Right.

    From Rotoworld:

Red Sox signed RHP Junichi Tazawa to a three-year, $3.3 million contract.

Tazawa gets a $1.8 million signing bonus, $450,000 in 2009, $500,000 in 2010 and $550,000 in 2011. The 22-year-old is expected to begin next season in Double-A. As varied as the scouting reports have been, it's tough to get a grasp on just what kind of upside he has and whether he profiles best as a starter or a reliever. The Red Sox, though, are expected to put him into the rotation initially.

    Not technically:

    Tazawa gets a $1.8 million signing bonus, $450,000 in 2009, $500,000 in 2010 and $550,000 in 2011.

so thats 3.3 million over 3 seasons. so if you space out the bonus for the 3 seasons then technically it is 1.1 per year.

Sure. TECHNICALLY, though, he doesn't get paid 1.1 mil per year, which is what I said. He gets $1.8 mil right away, and then a different salary each year.

Basically what HGM is saying is over the next 3 years after the bonus is paid, he makes 1.5 million. and it is NOT divided up equally each season

    season 1 : $450,000
    season 2 : $500,000
    season 3 : $550,000

Well a signing bonus can be paid on how ever it is agreed, all up front, over the life of the contract of a set number of years.

This brings up an interesting question.. what is the point of a signing bonus in an MLB contract ?

For rookie players it makes sense as they are effectively under a capped payscale till they have 3 years MLB exp, ans also in NFL where yearly salaries are not guaranteed.

But in this case, why is there a "signing bonus" and how does it effect the luxury tax?

Usually, to get money up front, I believe.

and how does it effect the luxury tax?
    I don't believe it does.

For BM purposes, I'd go with dividing the total compensation by three to get his annual salary number.

That's what I used to do, but with my work for BM2010, I've been using ONLY salary figures, and not adding in signing bonuses and option buyouts. The game only doles out salary figures, and nothing else, so I've changed my method in order to get the starting rosters a bit more on par with the in-game salary structure (even though, barring a change to the game, they will never come close to being equal simply because the real life salary structure if currently far different than the Mogul structure, ie. you won't see solid center fielders like Torii Hunter signing for $18 million a year in Mogul).
