Sure, but if the Vazquez trade is any indication, the Braves are shooting to contend now. If they don't acquire at least one more pitcher, preferably one better than Vazquez, the Vazquez deal would turn out to be a waste.

id rather see 3 years 45-50 mill at Lowe... and 4 year 55 million or so at Garland, and maybe 5 mill at colon. If you are going to blow all this $$$ on these 2 chumps... then give the damn prospects to SD for Peavy.

If its Vazquez or Garland... i want garland... then we can keep the prospects

The same kind of waste as a guy making 75 mil over 5 years with injury history, hurting himself early in year one? If they absolutely 'have' to sign a pitcher, Lowe can be had and is not the talent of Burnett but much more stable. They can still make a trade, try to work with whats in house, or sign a lower lvl starting pitcher to round the rotation. Olly Perez type. Strengthen the pen.

There's alot of ways to spend money, they aren't stuck with a do or die option on Burnett. I'm not even saying signing Burnett is a bad move, only that it's a risky one and one which I can understand noname's concern over.

Myself....as braves GM at 5 years, heck no. 3 years, maybe....maybe. But thats my opinion for what it's worth. As Yankees GM however, I can see them going 5 years and would do so myself if CC & Lowe were gone elsewhere. Gotta make a splash, and have more ability to eat the contract should it implode.

I could see wanting Lowe over Burnett, but Burnett is younger and does have higher upside, so that's in his favor. Garland though? Anybody who falls into the trap of giving him 50+ million is going to be in for a surprise. He's a huge risk. His peripheral numbers are terrible and declining. He's not an injury risk, but he's very liable to drop off a cliff at any moment. I know that I, at least, would prefer to give up 1 good prospect, 2 okay prospects, 1 guy I see as having a utility guy upside and $70 mil for Vazquez and Burnett than giving $50 mil each to Garland and Lowe. Vazquez+Burnett > Garland+Lowe. I think that Vazquez+Lowe would be the best combination, but I don't see that happening.

I wouldn't worry.......nobody is signing until CC signs, and I think he's going west coast which means the Yanks will grab Burnett and I'll drink to that!

There is no way you can say Garland and Lowe is better than Vazquez and Burnett - what are you smoking? Garland is horrible. He's benefited from great offenses in his recent success and still hasn't pitched that great. His peripherals are horrid and getting worse as Houston stated. Lowe isn't much better. Vazquez pitched very well for the Expos when he was in the NL. He went to the AL and suffered the same as anyone else going from NL to AL. Look at majority of the pitchers that go from AL to NL and tell me they don't, more often than not, find better success. Burnett has more potential than Vazquez and brings that "ace" persona and confidence that teams have a hard time finding. With him back in the NL, like Vazquez, AND in a pitchers park, he will find success.

Going after Peavy would require giving up at the very least Escobar + a couple other prospects, and possibly even one of Heyward/Schafer/Hanson. With Flowers gone, that's one good trade chip no longer available. Trading Escobar would require them to go after a shortstop like Furcal or Renteria. Getting Peavy would create holes elsewhere and/or empty the farm of top-level talent, whereas signing Burnett or Lowe just uses money.

Furcal or Rentaria I would take... Obviously id rather keep escobar but if we are supposedly going for it... TAKE THE PLUNGE.

    Peavy
    Vazquez
    Burnett
    Jair
    Smoltz/james/morton campillo

    ill take that I guess.

    lol talk about reconstruction

That plan calls for using a lot more money than just signing Burnett.
