Angels ready to offer Sabathia Yankee-sized contract,

Be more concerned with your character than your reputation, because your character is what you really are, while your reputation is merely what others think you are .

I'd say no, it is supposed to be a free market system so he should try to get as much as he feels he wants if at all possible. Personally I think it is hypocracy on the part of fans to say atheltes shouldn't try to earn as much as they can when in real life most of us do the same.

no, but it will be interesting to see if the Yankees are going to come over the top again.

also, doesn't it kind of hurt the team's dignity to offer so much to a player that explicitly said he'd rather not go to your team? they're pretty much begging him with money. Wang, and any 4 from the group of hughes/petitte/lowe/burnett/joba/kennedy/ollie perez sounds like a fine rotation to me.

..on 2nd thought never mind. they need sabathia. that rotation is not gonna cut it in the al east anymore. and they need an ace to counter beckett anyway.

    155 million anyone?

I have to disagree on that one. It is not a hypocracy of the fans to say that. In "real life" we couldn't retire off just the signing bonus. I understand why they want to make as much money as they can, but you'd think you would play to win championships. If I were that good at a sport I'd take leage average money for my position to play for my favourite team. If we didn't win any championships then during the latter part of my career I'd go to a team that was on the cusp of being great for league average money again. I know its not as easy as that as the players union likley would have something to say about that.

Anything that will keep C.C out of the AL East is good for me (unless of course the Jays get him haha). If he wants to stay West though I don't know why he wouldn't take the Angels offer since he will be making Yankee money except in a place he wants to play.

I wholeheartedly agree with this statement, with the stipulation that the words proven and professional be put in front of the word athlete, because I have absolutely no time for the amateurs (or should I say their agents?) holding out or demanding a major league contract before they've even played a game in rookie ball, or the equivalent in other sports. Certainly offer lucrative bonuses for the top picks, that goes without saying, but introduce a real slot money bonus system with some teeth, not the joke that exists right now.

You might as well not have a draft with the direction things are headed in baseball right now and go back to the way it used to be pre-draft, when they decided a draft was needed to stabilize the escalating bonuses - and look where we are now, 44 drafts after Rick Monday was taken first overall in 1965. Of course if you did that life would start to imitate Baseball Mogul and the big markets would corner all the talent, rather than just the proven talent. As Mogulers everywhere know, the draft and some form of revenue sharing are required to maintain competitive balance. Well, we've got the revenue sharing, but now the draft is sadly starting to slip away - it's long past time for an overhaul Allan H.!

Lol RickD, but I guess you label yourself "An irrational Yankee fan" so it makes a little more sense. In all honesty, I think Sabathia and Burnett will use the Yankee bids to drive up the offers from the places they really want to sign - somewhere in Cali for Sabathia and maybe St. Louis or even (egads!) Baltimore for A.J. I don't think either of them is all that well suited to the pressure cooker that is the Bronx and A.J. in particular would be an unmitigated disaster there and I say that as a huge fan of his work, having watched him over the last three years. He had trouble with the Toronto media, and I think he would drown in the Bronx, where even the stoic can become exasperated due to the fish-bowl surroundings.

Lowe's a possibility, although being a severe groundballer, I'm not sure he could deal with the Yanks infield defensive, well umm deficiencies. I'm sure he'd enjoy their offense though. As a Jays fan, I say keep your grubby hands off and let him come here to one of the best infield defenses in all of baseball (as long as Aaron Hill returns and John McDonald is returned to the starting role [OPS be damned - like Scutaro's that much better offensively]), please, umm pretty please. C'mon please, we don't have much else to look forward to, aside from betting on when J.P. Ricciardi will be kicked to the curb and the opening round of the World Baseball Classic. In my mind the Jays would be far better served to start re-building, but that can't happen while J.P. is still at the helm in lame duck limbo. It's really sad as a fan when you're pretty sure where your team will be about ten months from now.

You say you would take league average, but if you were in that situation I'm sure you would do the same.

    Exactly.

There's very few, if any, people that would choose $3-5 million (roughly league average) when confronted with the choice between that and $20 million.

Re: Angels ready to offer Sabathia Yankee-sized contract,

It all depends on what factors you feel are most important. If money is not most important he will sign with either a west coast team or back with Milwaukee.

I would like to think he wants to be in the playoffs first and foremost. If that's true then of the teams that made the offers who provides the best chance for being in playoffs?
