Probably. I could see him getting in WAY down the road. I doubt he'll get in the regular way.

He actually has a comparable career to many HOF pitchers, INCLUDING Don Drysdale (of course, Drysdale retired very early). I'm not saying Hershiser is as good or as deserving, but when they were at their best, Hershiser was not far off, the career numbers were similar, and Hershiser DID break Drysdale's record. I actually think the record and the '88 playoffs would be the way Hershiser gets in in the future.

Hershiser will be one of those "Do you remember the season of 'xx, when so-and-so did such-and-such. He also had a pretty good career" type of VC inductions. Maybe in 2040.

Also, I'm intrigued that KowboyKoop chose Hershiser...

A guy that seems to be very educated when it comes to baseball; I'd be curious to hear his argument for Hershiser.

Can somebody tell me how you know who someone else voted for??? I've seen other poll threads where someone's vote is commented on, but I don't know how you tell how someone voted. Is it just a mod thing, or am I missing something??

He's already not able to get in the regular way

He received ~11% of the vote in 2006, and then ~4% in 2007, dropping him from the ballot.

Click the number of votes shown in the poll. It shows you who voted for which options.

Not all polls have that feature. It's an option that can be toggled on or off when you create the poll.

Click on a number on the poll. It shows the public voting there.

    EDIT: What Houston said.

I kinda figured (haven't even SEEN him on a ballot in the past 2 years, so I should have figured), but wasn't completely sure. All I know is he had practically NO case for the HOF, which is kind of weird, because worse players have stuck on ballots for longer periods of time.

He's the perfect VC guy though.

I voted Brown, Clemens, Glavine, Johnson, Pedro, Maddux, Moose, Schilling, and Smoltz.

Cone is probably the best of the others on the list.
Now run and tell ya mama 'bout that!

I voted for the same players you did, except for Kevin Brown and Curt Schilling, and I voted for Jack Morris instead.

Yeah. Who are the 3 guys who blew that call?!?

I understand the 2 who want to keep out The Rocket. Roids will do that. But Pedro is basically a carbon-copy of Sandy Koufax, without the Jewiness.

HAHAHAHA! I just nearly spit out beer all over my desk at that last comment.

But it's true. Pedro is a lock based on the Koufax argument, and as much as I hate to say this as a Dodger fan, he's more deserving.

Care to explain why you've got no on Glavine but yes on Hershiser and Smoltz?

Since they announce who voted (and who didn't vote) for players on the regular HOF ballot, those that didn't vote for Pedro in this (public) poll were 5DiMaggio, TheBigBomber, and OldFatGuy. One is a Yankees' fan, one is a Tigers' fan (judging by his sig), and one is an old fat guy.

Re: Which of these pitchers belongs in the HOF?

I'm stingy, and I like guys with longevity (hypocritical as I chose Pedro, but you can forgive me there, right?)

    Roger Clemens
    Randy Johnson
    Greg Maddux
    Tom Glavine
    John Smoltz
    Pedro Martinez

The "Other" was going to be an emphatic push, not for Bert Blyleven (who I think will get in, albeit it overdue, without my support) for Tommy John. I know he was part of "that" era, but he was obviously significant to baseball outside of being a 5000 IP pitcher (nearly, 4850...) who had a significant impact outside of his actual playing. I think his pitching deserves merit (always a low K guy so his ERA+ is low along with it) but he controlled the homer, pitched a boatload of innings, and kept his ERA in the low 3s along with the significance of "his" surgery.

I really don't know if he gets in, if I remember correctly he was about 25% last time around. I think its a travesty if he does not, especially if we are even discussing pitchers like Jamie Moyer, David Wells, Bob Welch, Andy Pettitte, and David Cone...
