    Re: Swisher to Yankees

Some of the user comments speculated that they might use him as a role player and have him rotate between the outfield and first base, so they might not necessarily have him in mind as a full-time guy.

Very good deal for the Yankees. Swisher is exactly the type of player they need...can play all three outfield spots and first base, and a great buy-low opportunity.

Apparently, Wilson Betemit is also going to Chicago

Okay, it's Jhonny Nunez, Jeff Marquez, and Wilson Betemit for Nick Swisher and minor league pitcher Kanekoa Texeira.

How is Swisher .219/.332...better than Giambi? Don't they already have a OF (Cabrera) who can't hit?

Swisher is not a .219 hitter. He had a low .249 BABIP. Plus, Swisher's a much better defender than Giambi. Also, he's cheaper. And younger.

Yeah, except that Swisher can hit. This year he had a 92 OPS+, very poor for him and he's likely to bounce back. Melky's career OPS+ is 84.

    Re: Swisher to Yankees

I think this is a great trade for both teams, though New York definitely got the better end of the bargain.

Obviously this was based on need for Chicago. They've got a full outfield and a 1B, and badly needed a 3B. Maybe Betemit can finally have the breakout season he's been "due for" for some time now. I can't imagine that he doesn't end up starting 140 games at 3B. He can also play SS, so that's a bit of a bonus for a team with a brand new look on the left side of the infield. The only place they had for Swisher was CF, where he flat out sucks.

Parting with Swisher could be a huge mistake, especially if he finds his stroke again. He also plays an outstanding 1B, and I'm betting New York has him starting there. The Yankees just picked up one of the many pieces they'll need to become a force in the AL again. I wonder if they'll focus more on trading and less on FA signings than they normally would...

Just when it seems the yankees are learning to make their own players, they are going back to the old addictions.

    What?

For one, the best teams make use of all possible avenues to acquire talent. Your a Red Sox fan, you should know that.

For two, part of "making your own players" and running a good farm system is to enable you to make these types of deals.
