You can't play, you can't be traded, you can't sign with another team. You HAVE to file for free agency, or retire.

No - to sign a contract he has to file FIRST because 15 days post the World Series he no longer has any contract with any team. (basically the chicken-egg principle)

Honestly, I wouldn't even bother worrying about it. Players will always file, unless they are retiring (and even then, they usually file just as a matter of procedure).
