    Edgar Renteria now a FA

The announcement was made a month ago, but today the Tigers officially declined Edgar Renteria's $12MM option for 2009. It's possible the Tigers re-sign Renteria at a lower salary. Will they offer him arbitration, since he profiles as a Type A free agent? Eddie Bajek notes that Renteria would prefer the Tigers decline to offer, making him more attractive to other teams.

    Renteria is 33 years old,

Last year he hit: .270 with 10 homers, and he played in 138 games

    2007 he hit .332 with 12 homers and 57 RBI's.

Who would be the best suitor for him?

    AL teams should stay away.

Of the NL teams, I could see the Cardinals going after him.

Why should the AL teams stay away? I'm not arguing, I'm just interested in what makes Renteria an NL-type player.

I don't know what it is, but if you look at his last few years, he's been a poor player in the AL and a good player in the NL. It might just be a sample size thing, but it might just be that, considering the AL is the tougher league, he's just better fit for the NL.

I think he's older than what he claims to be....however I still think with such a limited amount of quality SS's he'll command a hefty price tag and AL teams will most certainly be interested. I think with many players it is a 'comfort' thing. Year two is when some feel fully acclimated and comfortable, and that reduced stress translates to better numbers. He should go back to STL or ATL..somewhere he's been. Heck....if I were Boston and was able to move Lugo i'd gamble again on Rents if he's cheap enough and would 'compete' for the job.

I have no doubt that there will be AL teams interested. I just don't know if they SHOULD be interested.

But come to think of it, the White Sox should look into him. A report out today said they're going to move Alexei Ramirez to shortstop and let Chris Getz and Jayson Nix compete for the second base job. Signing Renteria for a year or two and leaving Ramirez at second considering he'd likely be stretched defensively at short would be a much better plan than that.
