If your the sox... do you throw $$$ at Papelbon 4-5 years then sign K-Rod and make him the closer and Papps the setup/ put in rotation???

    What do you Guys think...

In BM I'd probably do somehting like that.... BUT is is going to kill Papps

No, if I were the Sox I wouldn't go after K-Rod, first he's going to cost 14-16 million per year if not more, they could use that money to get someone like Sabathia, Lowe, or Sheets. Plus, Pappelbon would probably be a little disapointed if the Sox signed him, considering hes the closer.

Imagine if you were Pappelbon, and you sign a contract, and they promise you that you would be their closer then they go out and sign K-Rod, how would that make you feel? I bet you there's a chance he holds out after that.

No..Paps only has two good pitchs. Also you don't make an overrated guy like Krod the most highly paid player on the team. Sox have cleaned Krods clock enough to know he has no place on the team. Let some OTHER schmucks throw away good money on him.

The Red Sox shouldn't even enter the bidding for K-Rod.

No way, Papelbon is a lot better then K-Rod.

Better, I don't think so, but I guess it's arguable.

But a lot better? That's a stretch, man.

well based on any statistical measurement of their pitching skill, Papelbon is better.

If anything Krod will cost about 15M per year, seeing how he will be your set-up man that seems a little pricey.

That would be like the Mets signing Ben Sheets so they can move Santana to Long-Relief.

    Re: K-Rod to the sox

    Let's compare the two

    Pappelbon:

    2006: 59 Games, 68.1 IP 13 BB, 75 K, 0.92 ERA
    2007: 59 Games, 58.1 IP, 15 BB, 84 K, 1.85 ERA
    2008: 67 Games, 69.1 IP, 8 BB, 77 K, 2.34 ERA

    Rodriguez:

    2006: 69 Games, 73.0 IP, 28 BB, 98 K, 1.73 ERA
    2007: 64 Games, 67.1 IP, 34 BB, 90 K, 2.81 ERA
    2008: 76 Games, 68.1 IP, 34 BB, 77 K, 2.24 ERA

To me I would take Pap. and it's not close. He has a much better ERA overall, he walks a LOT less people and that's the most important thing for a closer, when you have a 2 run lead, the last thing you want is to walk someone.

It's not a stretch at all. Rodriguez has pretty poor control, and walks 30 batters or so a year. Papelbon comes with similar strikeout capability, except with superb control with walk totals of 13-15-8 over his 3 seasons as closer. Rodriguez has never walked less than 28 batters in a year, and except for that one year, has always been between 32 and 35 walks. The huge difference in keeping batters off base gives Papelbon a sizeable edge.

You guys are forgetting one stat in your analysis, the easiest way to measure a relief pitcher's skill...
