Yep, and I guarantee you the fact the Rays tied it led up to the decision.

Even if the Rays hadn't scored..I can't imagine that MLB would've allowed them to call the game after five innings or whatever and award the Phils the series. Even if it was 2-1 right now....I can't imagine they'd let the WS end with a rain-shortened game. That woudl be a disaster.
It has been a while - but I believe that if the game couldn't be finished this is still technically a Phillies win. In the event of a rain delay it used to be that the score would revert to the score at the end of the last completed inning.
I'm sure they'll manage to finish the game eventually - maybe tonight, maybe tomorrow. But that would be an interesting decision to shorten the game.
No, that rule was changed, don't remember when though (I'll try to look it up). But it did used to revert to that last complete inning, but now, by rule, it becomes a suspended game, and whenever resumed (tonight, tomorrow, or whenever) it takes up from where it left off, the bottom of the sixth with the score tied 2-2.
That's why I'm sure the reason they called it when they did was because the Rays tied it. I would've been interesting to see if/when they would've called it had the Rays NOT tied it. By having the Rays tie it, it took MLB off the hook from an embarrassing way to end the World Series.
Yeah, I just looked it up and realized that I was wrong.
If the game hadn't been tied, MLB rules dictate it would've been an official completed game (once it's officially called).
- (c) If a game is called, it is a regulation game:
- (1) If five innings have been completed;
- (2) If the home team has scored more runs in four or four and a fraction half-innings than the visiting team has scored in five completed half-innings;
- (3) If the home team scores one or more runs in its half of the fifth inning to tie the score.
- (d) If a regulation game is called with the score tied, it shall become a suspended game. See Rule 4.12.
- (e) If a game is called before it has become a regulation game, the umpire shall declare it “No Game.”
thank you
I know what the Rulebook says, but I'd imagine that there is SOMETHING that allows the league commissioner to make a special ruling to suspend the game in special situations..with this being a special situation if the score was 2-1. I don't know for sure either way, but I just can't imagine Selig allowing the World Series to end that way...that would be a disaster of epic proportions. I have to think Selig would be able to step in somehow if such unusual circumstances presented themselves.
Selig couldn't do squat about it. There is no special rule just because its the world series
