Is the regular season starting a week later than usual? I remember hearing something about that.

I think it's starting like April 6th, but it's unrelated to the Classic.

I had heard that it was.

But either way, next year's schedule is so screwy. The World Series starts OCTOBER 28TH and could run until November 5th.

I was born here but I have dual citizenship and tend to side with Japan in international sporting matchups.

You don't have to root for your own country in sporting events. In the Olympics, I rooted for everyone except human rights violating China.

thats fine, just wondering since you go to school up in Everett, I assumed you were American. I find it funny for somebody not to root for their own country...but since you are also Japanese Citizen, that makes sense

I think it is good if you are proud of your heritage

Take Johan Santana, for example. The Mets are paying him $20 million this year to be their #1 starter as they try to get back to the postseason for the first time since 2006, coming off of two straight heartbreaking finishes. He's kind of important to their chances. Following a season in which he may have been the best starter in the NL, Santana underwent minor knee surgery, and as February approaches, he is unsure as to whether he will pitch in the WBC. This isn't entirely his decision—the Mets will have a say—but it's indicative of the choices the players have to make. With all due respect to Venezuela, Johan Santana's first loyalty should be to the Mets. I would not question Daisuke Matsuzaka's patriotism, but his first thought needs to be about the Red Sox. Matt Holliday isn't any less an American for passing on the red, white, and blue to wear the green and gold.

Can someone explain this argument to me? I never understood it and though that it should be up to the player. To put it simply, most of us here have jobs, and I doubt that most of us feel our ultimate loyalty is to our employer (even those of us that do contract work).

I agree with you. I would place family and heritage above work, and that is what these players are doing by playing in the WBC. They are showing national pride, which there is no problem in doing. Oh, but that's right, fair weather fans are greedy, and don't care about the players personal feelings.
