    Re: Braves Could Land Peavy

Jake Peavy has the power to block the Padres' efforts to trade him with the no-trade clause in his contract. For now, he is playing along, and has presented San Diego some guidelines. He'd prefer a National League team to an American League team because the man likes to hit and run the bases. He'd prefer to play for the Houston Astros, or the Atlanta Braves, or the Dodgers or the Cubs or the St. Louis Cardinals. He'll listen if the Padres have other ideas, such as dealing him to the Yankees.

The N.Y. Post says the deal would be for Hanson, Schafer and either Escobar or Johnson.

The executives spoken to say they anticipate a Braves package being built around pitcher Tommy Hanson and outfielder Jordan Schafer, who both peaked at Double-A last year, plus a middle infielder, either shortstop Yunel Escobar or second baseman Kelly Johnson.

Another AL GM said, "That is really a good deal if San Diego can make it."

If the Braves get Peavy, I think this is what the deal would look like:

    Braves: Peavy, Greene
Padres: Hanson, Schafer, Escobar, lower level pitching prospect

    or

    Braves: Peavy
Padres: Hanson, Schafer, Johnson, lower level pitching prospect

If I'm Frank Wren, I still wouldn't make that deal. We need to rebuild.

Houston, there is no way we deal Jurrjens unless we are talking a huge blockbuster with either Gonzalez or Young coming back with Peavy as well (with us sending over more prospects).

In other words, not gonna happen.

Pitching is one of our weak areas for 2009, so there is no way we deal a pitcher that was our de facto ace last year.

Well, there are multiple other sources that put the price at our top pitching prospect (Hanson), a CF prospect (Schafer, Hernandez) plus a middle infielder (Lillibridge, Escobar, Johnson), plus some lower pitching prospects.

Now way does Wren include both Heyward and Hanson in the same package, nor will he include Jurrjens.

I think he will most likely give the Padres two offers, much like Boston was purported to have done in the Santana saga, one with Hanson and one with Heyward.

Hopefully we just keep our prospects and sign a few FA (Lowe, Burnett, Sheets) add a power outfield bat (Dunn, Burrell) and sit back and wait to really contend in 2010 or 2011.

Thats adding 30/40 million in roll no way the Braves are in a position to do that

I'd do it so fast their head would spin. I dont like givin up pitching especialy our young stud... but I can live without schafer and johnson is expendable due to Prado.

I DON'T do the one with escobar tho... We have a replacement for Johnson, not for Escobar. If we have to take Greene, we pay 1/2 the contract and flip him somewhere for a longshot pitching prospect. you never know

GM reiterates Braves won't part with prospects, even for Peavy

"From our perspective we still feel the same and we are looking to the future when that next wave of talent I spoke of arrives in Atlanta," Wren said in an e-mail to The Associated Press.

Lets just remember that Kyle Davies and Chuck James and Mcbride were all untouchables and the next greatest thing too at one point

    Here is your TOP 20

    1) Jason Heyward, OF, Grade A-: A personal favorite, though he actually hit fewer homers than expected. Broad base of skills.
    2) Frederick Freeman, 1B, Grade B+: Debating whether or not to move him up to A-. Not as broad a skill base as Heyward, but power and youth stand out.
    3) Thomas Hanson, RHP, Grade B+: Looks good to me, though will need some Triple-A to put on the finishing touches. Number Two starter ceiling.
    4) Jordan Schafer, OF, Grade B+: I should have put him on the Rotowire Top 100 list. Will be in the 50/50 for the book. Power, speed, defense, OBP, and played well without the juice.
    5) Tyler Flowers, C, Grade B: Love the power and walks, main question is glove.
    6) Cole Rohrbough, LHP, Grade B: Excellent ceiling. I cannot prove why objectively, but I worry a bit about his arm. Needs sharper command too.
    7) Craig Kimbrel, RHP, Grade B: I hesitate to grade relief prospects this highly, but I can’t ignore his early dominance.
    8) Gorkys Hernandez, OF, Grade B-: Would like to see more power, other skills coming along.
    9) Kris Medlen, RHP, Grade B-: Am I overrating him? Looks like he could be a really good swingman.
    10) Jeff Locke, LHP, Grade B-: I’ve liked him since he was in high school. Like Rohrbough, worry some about injuries.
    11) Randall Delgado, RHP, Grade B-: Needs better command, but a high ceiling guy.
    12) Brett DeVall, LHP, Grade B-: A long way away, but a high ceiling.
    13) Zeke Spruill, RHP, Grade B-: Like DeVall, a long way off, but fits into organization philosophy perfectly.
    14) Brandon Hicks, SS, Grade C+: Love the power, walks, speed, defense. Hate the strikeouts.
    15) Eric Campbell, 3B, Grade C+: If his head is on straight, could surprise people in ’09.
    16) James Parr, RHP, Grade C+: Fourth/fifth starter type.
    17) J.J. Hoover, RHP, Grade C+: Sleeper call on a junior college guy that I love. Hard-thrower with improving command.
    18) Kala Ka’aihue, 1B, Grade C+: Similar to his brother Kila though I don’t think he will perform quite as well in ’09 as his brother did in ’08.
    19) David Francis, RHP, Grade C+: Sleeper pick.
    20) Edgar Osuna, LHP, Grade C+: Sleeper pick, great K/BB ratio.

I wouldn't read too much into that. Wren seems like a pretty smart guy to me (remember who his boss was) and I believe he is simply posturing, making a big deal to the media about how certain guys are untouchable, so when Wren finally "gives in" and includes one in an offer, it seems like a bigger deal that it really is.

Like you posted earlier, we have about $40 MM to use, so why not turn to FA instead of giving up our prospects? If they don't pan out, that's okay because we still the prospects to replace them (in theory), but if for some reason (elbow) Peavy is hurt, we lost a huge chuck of our future that could ultimately cripple us on down the road.

I just have a bad feeling that if we trade for Peavy, sometime in April the words "Jake Peavy" and "Dr. James Andrews" will be used in the same headline.

    Re: Braves Could Land Peavy

Cubs jump into Peavy trade talks, eye three-team deal

The Braves and Padres have settled on two pieces of the package that Atlanta would send to San Diego -- shortstop Yunel Escobar and outfield prospect Gorkys Hernandez. The Braves likely would include one of two young pitchers, either Charlie Morton or Jo-Jo Reyes. The two sides are at odds over the other pieces in the deal; the Padres are known to have interest in young pitcher Jeffrey Locke.
i dont like escobar leaving BUT if they would do Escobar, Hernandez,Reyes, and Locke... id sign it now and dont give the cubs time to make a REALLY good 3 way trade
