    2003 All-Star Game Review

    --July 10, 2003

The 2003 All-Star Game was an exciting one. The AL won 8-3 on the strength of All-Star Game MVP Alex Rodriguez's two home runs and five RBI's.

For the Red Sox, Pedro Martinez, Jon Papelbon, Jason Varitek, Manny Ramirez, David Ortiz, and Nomar Garciaparra were selected. Pedro pitched an inning with a strikeout and a walk and earned the win in the game, Manny was 1-4 with a walk and an RBI, Varitek was 0-1, Ortiz was 0-1 as a pinch hitter, Papelbon pitched one inning, allowed two hits, a walk, and a solo homer, and Nomar didn't play in the game.

    Re: Reliving the Curse

    Red Sox get new Sheets

    --July 20, 2003

Earlier today the Red Sox agreed to a deal that will net them ace starter Ben Sheets (93). It'll be for a steep price however, they will send starter Tim Wakefield (78) and prospects Craig Hansen (67/97), Brandon Moss (69/97), and Abe Alvarez (69/93).

    Milwaukee Brewers' Side:

The Brewers do lose a prominent, front of the rotation, ace pitcher in Sheets. However, with the stage that the franchise is at it's a pretty good deal.

The team is already approximately five million dollars in debt and Sheets was due to hit arbitration after next season. In addition, the Brewers add three blue-chip prospects that could become cornerstones for the franchise in the near future.

    Boston Red Sox Side:

The Red Sox were already in great position to break their championship drought, and the addition of Sheets only makes them stronger.

He's got great control of all his pitches, the best of which are a high 90's fastball and a 12-6 curve, and he can strike hitters out with the best of them too. While with the Brewers he had posted a 7-6 record in 20 starts, kept a solid ERA of 4.29. He'd also pitched 130 innings and walked only 36 compared to 135 K's in those innings. Part of his ERA can likely be attributed to his defense as well, based on the fact that his DICE is a minuscule 2.85.

They did give up a number of talented youngsters, but the Red Sox farm system is loaded, and they managed to avoid giving up any of Jon Lester, Clay Buchholz, Hanley Ramirez, and Dustin Pedroia.

One of the great things about Sheets is his youth. Lowe and Pedro are both getting up there in years, but Sheets is only 25 and could anchor the staff for years to come after their departure.

Wow, that is a ton to give up, but as you said, it isn't like it killed your MILB system. Hopefully in this universe, Sheets isn't made out of glass for you.

    Re: Reliving the Curse

    Sheets Debut a complete Success

Ben Sheets Red Sox debut was a complete success, in the most literal sense of the term.

Sheets allowed a double to center fielder Tim Raines to start his Red Sox career, but he quickly settled down to retire two of the next three batters on strikes. Sheets went all nine innings for a complete game in his Sox debut, and allowed only two runs, two walks, and two hits, and struck out 10 Baltimore Oriole batters.

Hopefully this start was an indication of things to come.

Jason Varitek was the hero at the plate, hitting a game-winning two run homer in the bottom of the seventh.

    Re: Reliving the Curse

Red Sox lead continues to expand

July was another phenomenal month for the Red Sox. They were seven games over .500 for the month, at 16-9, and extended their AL East lead to 17 games over the New York Yankees, with their overall record of 71-36. They managed to stay relatively injury free for the month, Pedro did miss a start and Manny has a dislocated rib that has kept him out 4 or 5 games and will keep him out another four games, but otherwise they've stayed healthy. They also managed to add a young, talented, ace-type pitcher in Sheets before the deadline. This team is setup very well going into the final two months of the season and this very would could be the year that they break the Curse of the Bambino.

Month Record (Overall Record and Standing): 16-9 (71-36, 1st place 17.5 GA)
    Team Batting: .289
    Team ERA: 3.84
    RS: 626
    RA: 443
    Pythagorean W-L: 71-36

    The Good:
    • Although his batting average was already very good, sitting around .310, Nomar's batting average shot up some 30 points this month. He's now hitting .340/.382/.565 with 17 homers and 75 RBI's.
    • David Ortiz may very well be cementing his case for the MVP Award. He's hitting .316/.387/.598 with 28 homers and 98 RBI's in 107 games....and it's only August.
    • Pedro has pitched fabulously and his ERA is down to 2.94. He's also 15-3 with 146 strikeouts and only 33 walks in 141 innings. He may be on his way to yet another Cy Young.
    • Shea Hillenbrand has been hitting well all season, and he's currently hitting .288/.329/.516 with 20 homers and 65 RBI's.

    The Bad:
    • After starting out the season very hot, Varitek has come back down to earth. He's seen his rate stats drop all the way down to .268/.352/.474, which isn't bad at all but nothing compared to what he did from April through June.
    • Papelbon has struggled a bit lately, as his ERA has shot up nearly a full run over the past month.
    • Prior to his injury, Manny had been in the midst of a slump. In his last 10 games he'd hit only .231/.318/.436.
    • Parts of the bullpen, namely the middle relief and long relief roles, have been a problem area of late. Our long reliever Brandon Lyon has an ERA near seven in 13 innings, and the middle reliever, Hideki Okajima, has an ERA over five in 10 innings.

Red Sox MVP so far: DH David Ortiz - There's absolutely no question about it. Ortiz has been hitting for average and power, getting on base, and driving in runs for the Red Sox this season, and he's definitely in the consideration for league MVP as well. .316/.387/.598, 28 homers, 98 RBI's in 440 AB's.
Red Sox Cy Young so far: SP Pedro Martinez - Pedro struggled in the first month of the season, but has anchored the staff ever since, he too has a case for league Cy Young. He's currently 15-3 with an ERA of 2.94 and 146 K's in 141 innings.
Minor League to keep an eye on: SS Hanley Ramirez - He may be only 19 years old, but he's definitely ready for the big time. If only I had a place to put him. He's tearing up AAA to the tune of .309/.367/.541 with 21 homers, 81 RBI's, and 32 steals in 42 attempts.

Irl, Hanley is not that great of a fielder, so maybe you could move him to 2nd or 3rd?

His glove ain't much at the stage he's at now either. I'd rather not put him at second, or any up-the-middle position, because Sanchez is a good defensive second baseman and Nomar is bad enough at short. I've thought about third but Shea is crushing the baseball this season. I think I'm gonna give him the rest of this season in AAA, maybe have him on the playoff roster, and then figure out where to play him for next season.

EDIT: Actually, Nixon's contract is up after this season ('03) so maybe I'll let Nixon go and turn him into a right fielder.

I always thought Hanley'd make a better left fielder than shortstop...

P.S. I really like your monthly format.
