    Al mvp?

The NL MVP should be cut and dry with Albert Pujols, but its much more open in the AL. Who do you guys think will win it?

If Quentin hadn't gotten hurt I think he would've won it easily, and his stats are still good enough that he could still win it. Pedroia has a pretty good case. A-Rod's been great. Youkilis is a solid candidate. I'm sure I'm forgetting another worthy candidate, but if I had to pick someone I'd be somewhat biased and take Pedroia.

Justin Morneau is in the running as well, although I don't have a vote for AL MVP yet. I agree on the National League... there should be little question that it's Pujols.

I've narrowed my pool down to 6 I think - Cliff Lee, Roy Halladay, Grady Sizemore, Justin Morneau, Joe Mauer, and Dustin Pedroia. Not sure in what order I'd put them though.

I THINK Pedroia tho Morneau gives serious cosideration... without him the Twinkies would be SUNK. Lee gets serious consideration but its not like he won 25 games and kept them in the race

I think pedrioa, Cliff Lee, Morneau, and Youk all deserve a lot of consideration. Halladay does as well, he has been overlooked

What about Miguel Cabrera?! His late surge is amazing, 36 homers, over 30 doubles, 126 RBIs, and .292/.351/.535, how is he not in contention? I don't think a pitcher should get MVP, that's what the Cy Young is for. Cabrera has been tons better than Grady Sizemore and a bit better than Youk too. If I had to pick, it's between Cabrera and Morneau, Morneau has the lead though. Miggy also outmatches Carlos Quentin, in RBIs and average.

    Re: Al mvp?

    *No particular order.

    Alex Rodriguez
    Kevin Youkilis
    Josh Hamilton
    Miguel Cabrera
    Dustin Pedroia
    Justin Morneau

All those guys should be in the discussion.

A-Rod probably has the best numbers out of all of them (#1 in SLG%, 6th in OBP, 4th for OPS, and OPS+ is 152); Miguel Cabrera has a case for best numbers in the AL also. Josh Hamilton has been pretty solid all year, and has the 3rd best numbers. Kevin Youkilis has the 4th best numbers and has been pretty consistent. Dustin Pedroia on the other hand, doesn't have the prototypical MVP numbers, but he basically carried his team for about 2 months, and that is what an MVP does. Justin Morneau has carried his team all year, and has 129 RBI's to help prove it, along with a .304 BA, 23 homers, 47 doubles, and 136 OPS+.

The definition of the awards say otherwise.

Cabrera has been tons better than Grady Sizemore and a bit better than Youk too.
Cabrera: .292/.351/.535, 36 HR, 126 RBI, below average defense, no baserunning value
Youkilis: .315/.392/.573, 29 HR, 115 RBI, good defense and versatility, no baserunning value
Sizemore: .270/.376/.509, 33 HR, 90 RBI, 38 SB, great defense, great baserunning value.

Sizemore is greatly underapreciated because a good chunk of his value comes from walks, defense, and baserunning. Sizemore's offense has been on par with Miguel Cabrera...and he's a CENTER FIELDER as compared to Cabrera and Youkilis being first basemen. That's why Sizemore is more valuable.

And Joe Mauer is another guy getting absolutely no love in the MVP discussion, and he's the most valuable player on his team. Unless you don't believe in positional adjustments.

    Re: Al mvp?

I guess the Quentin injury hurt, but he still has 130 games played .. and 550+ PA's ... and STILL leads his team in HR, RBI and runs scored, and dosen't the fact the Sox are threating to miss the playoffs with out him show how valuable he was ? and why does him playing 130 games DQ him when you'll consider A pithcer who plays on 33 or 35 games ...

While Pedrioa seems to be getting alto of Pub here, don't forget for about 1/3 of the season (51 games) from Apr 23 -Jun 15 he was an atrocious 217/262/308. as an intersting fact since Jun 15, he has been 373/422/591 and has more games with 3+ hits (17) than games with 0 hits (10)

And why is everyone on the Morneau train and ignoring Mauer his while is Power numbers are quite a bit less (9 HRs) his 331/415/452 (135 OPS+) seems pretty impressive next to Morneau's 304/376/507 (136 OPS+) especially when you consider Mauer isn't just a catcher but one of the better ones in the League.

    Re: Al mvp?

Actully, after re-reviewing the stats, this is the order of deservingness for the MVP:

    1. Youkilis
    2. Sizemore Tie
    2. Pedrioa Tie
    3. Mauer
    4. Morneau
    5. Cabrera
    6. Cliff Lee
    7. Milton Bradley
    8. Josh Hamilton
    9. Roy Halladay
    10. Alex Rodriguez

    Predicted MVP choice of Sportswriters:

They seem to feel a team has to make the playoffs or do really good for their players to win an MVP. That crosses off Sizemore, Cabrera, Bradley, and Hamilton. They like the big markets, but Morneau won MVP a few years ago. But I doubt they will choose him or Mauer, do to Morneaus drop in homers, and Mauer's lack of publicity. That leaves Pedrioa, A-Rod, Halladay and Youk. The Yankees are not making the post season, so sports writers may pass over him. Halladay is in a simular situation, and is a pitcher. So Pedrioa and Youk...... I feel they will choose Pedrioa, just barely

    Re: Al mvp?

    I think you're nuts, RSR.

Pedroia is more deserving than Youkilis when you take into account the numbers hes put up as a second basemen, along with the defense he plays at an up the middle position. Youkilis probably isn't even a top 5 MVP candidate, to be completely honest, and if he is its just barely. Mauer when taking into account defense and position is more valuable, Morneau, Sizemore, Pedroia, and Cabrera are all at least more valuable than Youk is.

My top 10 candidate would go something like this, I think:

    1. C Joe Mauer
    2. 2B Dustin Pedroia
    3. CF Grady Sizemore
    4. 1B Justin Morneau
    5. 1B Miguel Cabrera
    6. SP Cliff Lee
    7. 1B Kevin Youkilis
    8. 3B Alex Rodriguez
    9. SP Roy Halladay
    10. OF Carlos Quentin

If it wasn't for Morneau and Mauer the Twins wouldn't be holding first place right now, so they deserve MVP, unless you count it all on stats.
