The first WS (1903) was best of 9, and Boston won in 8 games. In 1919, 1920, and 1921, the WS format was changed to best of 9 again. Cincinnati beat the BlackSox in 8 in 1919, and the Giants beat the Yankees in 8 games in 1921 (Cleveland beat Brooklyn 5-2 in 1920). The other Game 8 occurred in the 1912 WS, in which Boston won the WS in 8 games, 4-3-1 (1 tie game, which counts as a game) over the Giants. So, although the 1912 series was best of 7, the tie game required an 8'th game to be played.
