Red Sox to retire Pesky's number

Obviously for a lifetime of service, rather than onfield accomplishment. And I agree on the decision.

However a number of Sox fans have suggested as the next numbers:

Boggs: Are you kidding? Maybe he'll wear a Yankee hat at the induction ceremony or a Devil Rays hat if he gets paid enough.

    Clemens: BAHAHAHHA...no

    Tony C: No. No. Sorry.

Rice, Evans, Tiant: No, no, no. Nostalgia doesn't merit inclusion.

Manny: No. effing. way. Gaudy numbers don't merit inclusion either. Even if they are amazing.

    Nomah: No-way. Sorry Nomar.

My picks: Francona someday (If he dropped dead of a heart attack tomorrow, they'd retire it opening day 2009), Pedro, and maybe Ortiz.

I would retire Manny, Ortiz, Pedro, Boggs, Francona, and Nomar out of your list

Re: Red Sox to retire Pesky's number

Pedro is maybe, but he pitched 7 or is 16 season in a redsox uni.
Im generally agianst retiring guys who a a few good season with the team which leaves out guys like pedro, manny tiant even clemens and Ortiz (unless ortiz layes another 6 years in a Sox uni then talk)

Retired numbers should be guys that are Iconic with the team - While a player like Boggs is close to that there was a touch of acrimony is his leaving --

the Only guys that fit that Bill you listed area Rice (who should have alreasy been in th HOF) and maybe Evans ...

Re: Red Sox to retire Pesky's number

Nowadays, you'll be hardpressed to find many guys that spend more than 7-8 seasons with one single team...so if you go by that, you'll be leaving out a good amount of deserving guys.

Clemens spent 13 years with BOston (11 full)...that's a "a few good seasons"?

I'm not a Boston fan, but if I was, I'd want Boggs, Pedro, Clemens, and Manny to have their numbers retired...maybe Ortiz.

Re: Red Sox to retire Pesky's number

To me a guy who's number is retired should epitomize the team and the team "spirit" so to speak or "tradition" is probably a better word.

I think the Pesky retirement is awesome. I can even see Rice and maybe Evans and Tiant.

Clemens yeah bt I think there needs to be some time for that one to happen. Boggs yeah but again...time.

Thats fine, but Boggs and Clemens are special cases, otherwise odd are they'd be on track for that ... and If a guys isn't Iconic with a team beacuse he spent 6 years with one team then 7 years with another then 5 with a 3rd, then why should he have his Number retired with a specific team ...

Retiring a number for a player for a specific team has to have isn;t done just cuz of how well a player played, its what he meant to the orgaization, like I said Pedro is is a maybe simply for How good he was for those years.

But, according to the Sox rule

"The Red Sox policy on retiring uniform numbers is based on the following criteria:
    • Election to the National Baseball Hall of Fame
    • At least 10 years played with the Red Sox "

So no manny, no pedro and Ortiz has a waays to go seeing how he isn;t a HOFer.

wouldn't surprise me to see Ortiz make the HOF, not that I'm saying he should. Playing or Boston/New York boosts people's numbers in the eyes of voters/ESPN.

Curt Schilling is another guy that could get his number retired, or maybe just his sock

Thats how I feel, but his "wins" count will discourage the Buster Olneys and Steve Phillips out there

They're not THAT stupid. Nobody is. Pedro is a surefire Hall of Famer. His peak was astronomical.

Re: Red Sox to retire Pesky's number

With those stupid, strict rules of theirs, this team could end up not being able to retire ANY numbers from the team that "broke the curse," or last year's team.
