I never have seen Gwynn play, but I am in awe when I watch Ichiro play. He can turn any type of contact into a hit. For example, his 200th hit this season was a slow dribbler to the shortstop and he beat the throw by a mile. Gotta love the guy.
He was a very, very VERY special player.
Ichiro is a fantastic ballplayer, but Gwynn is an ALL TIME great, and one of the best hitters ever to pick up a bat.
I'd like to take this opportunity to mention a stat that's always astounded me:
Gwynn faced Greg Maddux more than he faced any other pitcher.
Gwynn hit .429 against Maddux in 103 PAs. Even though it is L vs. R... uh, .429 against Maddux is pretty friggen incredible...
Woah woah woah. The Ichiro "support" skyrocketed! Where'd all that come from?
