its got to be cobb. i was thinking roger conner who helt the alltime HR record before ruth 138

but i THINK he was pre 1900 or ended right around there

It is indeed Cobb. From the source "Year in Review: 1909 American League". Baseball Almanac. Retrieved on 2007-05-28. which says , "Although he performed poorly in the post-season, Cobb won the Triple Crown by hitting .377 with 107 RBI and nine home runs – all inside-the-park. Cobb thus became the only player of the modern era to lead his league in home runs in a season without hitting a ball over the fence."
