Almost all of the pieces were there last year, with Crawford, Upton, Shields, and Kazmir. Not to say I expected them to be this successful this soon, but I knew they were a young team with high-quality draft picks bound to eventually have a good team. None of the guys I've mentioned are having particularly great years, either, so you can see that they're playing as a cohesive unit now (not to mention the addition of Longoria in the lineup).

Who knows? The changing of the uniforms and name from a franchise with a history of failure to something new probably helped with confidence and motivation (same with the D-back's transformation).

Rays are without Longoria and Crawford and they still win. They are without Percival and they still win. You still don't get it do you, that's what they do, that's all they do. You can't stop them!!

I keep wondering what will happen if both the Yankees and Red Sox do not make the postseason. Will ESPN crumble? Will the suicide rates among Yankees and Red Sox fans increase? Will more people start showing up to Rays games?

No way both Yankees and Red Sox don't make the playoffs. It'll take a monumental, epic collapse for both teams to run up those kinds of losing streaks.

Actually, the Yankees will probably miss the playoffs, so ESPN is probably praying for the Red Sox to pull through. They're probably sacrificing their fat guts so that Beckett will get well.

Both teams seasons WILL be determined by the series this week if the Yankees sweep then they are back in the race, but also it will aid the WhiteSox/Twins & possibly eliminate the Red Sox....if the Red Sox sweep (highly unlikely viewing their Pitching problems) then the Yankees are out - Full Stop.

As for ESPN,well like any media they need to maximise their subscribers/readers & that in this world = Red Sox/Yankee/Mets favouritism SIMPLE as that

Actually it would be quite easy for the Sox to miss out.....the Yankees are all but done.

The Red Sox have a half-game lead in the Wild Card. The Yankees are 5 games back. It would take a collapse of such extremely minimal proportions for the Red Sox to not make the playoffs that it wouldn't even qualify as a collapse. The Yankees need to leapfrog a couple teams to make it. As Pavelb1 said, they're all but done.
