    Proposed 2009 Yankee line-up

On the Red Sox Newsgroup, a poster proposed this possible Yankee line-up for 2009 after a number of FA signings, and not signing others such as Mussina and Giambi.

    "Their lineup could be:
    LF Damon
    SS Jeter
    RF Ramirez
    3b Rodriguez
    1b Teixeira
    DH Posada
    2b Cano
    C Molina
    CF Cabrera

    Their rotation could be:
    SP Sabathia
    SP Wang
    SP Sheets
    SP Pettitte
    SP Chamberlain

Their bullpen could include, at the back end, Marte, KRod, and
    Rivera."

Now only three of their nine batters are under 33. And I did some simulations....now OF COURSE BM is not going rate these people as they are irl,... but essentially the defensive liabilites of the fielders are hurting what looks like a great starting pitching staff, on paper, too much. And...as today...any injuries are going to devestate that line-up. They allready have a couple of black-holes in Molina and Cabrera.

That will NOT be the lineup, IMO.

    LF - Damon
    SS - Jeter
    1B - Teixeira
    3B - A-Rod
    DH - Matsui
    RF - Nady
    C - Posada
    2B - Cano
CF - Decent CF'er from FA or Melky/Gardner

    SP - Sabathia
    SP - Wang
    SP - Mussina
    SP - Joba
    SP - Hughes

    CL - Mo
    SU - Veras
    RP - Bruney
    RP - Ramirez
    RP - Robertson
    RP - Mark Melancon

We will keep Nady, not sign Manny, release Marte (to get the draft picks), sign Tex and/or Sabathia, keep Posada at C, and have a very good backup C in Jose Molina, plus we'll platoon Melky and Gardner unless we find a good CF'er in FA... Of course, Damon would be solid @ CF, IMO and we could bring back Bobby to play RF while Nady plays LF.

Absolutely ridiculous. They are gonna sign MANNY, TEXIERA, SHEETS, AND SABATHIA!?!? All in one season?? Please.........that is just ludicrous.

    Aside from Manny...why not?

And the question...though I love the input...is not so much what the line-up will look like in a year, as it is...what do you think a line-up like this will do? I agree with the simulations that..that line-up is too old and defensively inefficient.

No, no i don't think the Yankees will go after Manny either, unless Hankie gets it into his head it would be some sort of earthshattering psychological weapon to use against the Sox.

Even the Yankees can't afford the top four free agents in the league.

They can when they lose Mussina, Giambi, Abreau. That's 50 million right there.

Oh...Pudge and Pavano is another 15 million. And don't forget K-Rod has been thrown in there also to sign.

You honestly believe Sabathia, Sheets, Manny and Tex will all go to New York?

I know there's not a sufficient reason "why not?" but Hank and Cashman are building the farm system. Sabathia, Sheets and most likely Tex and Manny will want long term deals upwards of three years (Manny most likely 3). If you're farm system is being held back by aging dollars you go into the funk the Yankees are in now.

    You missed KRod.

In all seriousness, if the Yankees sign every one of these guys, if ANY team signs every one of these guys, I'm not watching baseball for a good while, because it's not much of a league sport any longer if one team can land the top 5 free agents in one shot.

Francisco Rodriguez is not signing with the Yankees. Do people honestly think that either a) Mariano Rivera will be moved to a setup man or b) a man who is likely to be coming off a season he which he broke the save record, and if not, came really close, is going to sign with a team that's NOT going to use him as their closer? Get real.

What would happen to the compensation picks if the Yankees supposedly signed all of those players? If they did sign Sabathia, Sheets, K-Rod, Manny and Teixiera, where would the picks go. All are most likely Type A free agents so the Brewers, Angles, and Dodgers would get two picks. Both the Brewers and Angles would get four each. What would happen.

From Keith Law: "If a team signs more than one Type A free agent, its picks are parceled out to the 'losing' clubs in an order determined by the ratings of the free agents the team signed."

So, the team that lost the highest rated free agent would get the Yankees first round pick. The team that lost the next highest rated would get the Yankees 2nd round pick, I BELIEVE, although I'm not positive beyond the first pick. Note, though, that only picks 16-30 can be "given away." If the Yankees pick in the top 15, the teams that lost the free agents will only get a supplemental first round pick.

Each team would get a supplemental first round pick for each free agent lost.

But, don't worry, the Yankees won't be signing all 5 of those guys.

The two angles are right angles, so they'd form a square-like thing

LOL, I've actually never seen someone misspell Angels as Angles twice in one sentence

You do realize that there will be other teams trying to sign these guys too, right???? The Yanks will probably get C.C. for sure I bet..but after that, there's gonna be a lot of bidders for all the others.

Yeah, and those players will probably want to sign with a winning team anyway.
