I got involved when HGM said

actually provide information to back up what you're saying, like ohms is, providing information directly from our own government
I was simply stating that just because the information comes from the government doesn't mean it's 100% true.

Then Dickay was bashed for using some government information and was countered by more information of dubious origin...

Uh... You brought it up, you tell me. I was just replying to what you said.
Uh...no. OFG asked what my position was. I responded.

Which, I believe, was unnecessary and served no purpose other than to be confrontational, as what I said did not at all imply that I believe, or was saying, that everything that the government says is 100% true. If you know me in even the least bit, you'd know I have a deep distrust of the government. My statement was just saying that ohms is providing information and citing his sources, in bulk, while dickay isn't, and the time in question that he did was from a previous thread.

Well, obviously, few of us know each other even a little bit. This entire thread is confrontational. My sole purpose wasn't to be confrontational, though I in no way will go out of my way to avoid being confrontational.

I was reading through the thread listening to the B.S. being spread around by both sides. Each side was questioning the accuracy of each other's argument and your statement (something along the lines of) but Ohm's information comes directly from the US government made me laugh. With your "deep distrust of the governmet" I think you can at least see why I would call that statement into question

That was really irrelevent to what I was saying. The statement I made gave no such implication that I was trying to say, "Since it's from the government, it's true." The statement was quite clearly saying "Ohms is providing sources, dickay is not."

    But whatever.

It's perfectly clear if you read the entire statement, not take it out of context, and not add in your own words.

It does not say "Your information is wrong, but ohms's information comes from the government", implying that ohms's information is true. It says explicitly "You're not providing information to back up what you're saying. Ohms is."

dickay, it was a flawed statistical study. That's it, game over. There's no arguing with that.
provide information to back up what you're saying, like ohms is, providing information directly from our own government.
But, as you say, Whatever. This has turned into no more than a pissing contest.

What are you trying to say?

I'm trying to say that any semblance of logical debate has gone by the way side.

Dickay quoted one source, and ohms quoted multiple other sources disproving, at best, and making inconclusive, at worst, what was said in that source.

Either way, you popped into this thread to pick a fight, argue semantics, and insert words into my mouth. That does tend to throw logical debate out the window.

    Re: Lower Drinking Age?

Thank you for telling me my motives HGM. What else would you like to tell me about myself? Don't you think it's a bit arrogant (a word that's been bandied about a bit in this thread) for you to tell me why I did something? I guess that you assume you know me better than I know myself.

Who's putting words in whose mouth?

    see...it works both ways

But, trying to get out of the wind we are all pissing in

I spoke to my cousin who's in her first year of residency and I asked her the question about the use of medications in her opinion. She replied that certain medications (antibiotics) are over used, some (antidepressants) are under used and that pain medications are both under and over used. I asked what the hell that meant and she said that "people abuse them and that makes some doctors, especially young doctors who aren't as confident, nervous about treating pain that is really there.

So dubious statistics, studies, propoganda, etc aside and dubious personal experiences in its place, I have come to the conclusion that some doctors are on each side. There are some that under prescribe out of fear and some that have no problem handing out medications like candy.

As with most issues, pain management isn't black and white. That's hardly surprising.
The problem though is that there are some doctors who are afraid to prescribe pain medication, not due to any medical reasons but because of a (completely understandable) fear of persecution. That sort of issue, in the United States, is a real problem in my view. If anyone who is doing legitimate work fears persecution due to the actions involved in performing that work... well, that's a serious problem in my book. That it's not a universal problem doesn't lessen the importance of the issue.

...on a more personal note: filihok, you have a habit of jumping into the middle of threads and somewhat derailing them. It seems that you genuinely want to be involved in the conversations, which is cool, but... I don't know. There's something about the way that you go about it that's slightly problematic. You're always putting people down in indirect ways it seems, which hardly helps the community. I think that's what HGM was getting at, above.

Yeah...people don't like others who come in and don't support their viewpoints.

Yeah...I'd probably be better served to put people down directly.

The only thing I was putting down was the U.S. government and the corruption within it. Sure I could have used more tact, but tact become less important as frustration grows (as anyone can see by reading through any of these "controversial" threads). I didn't say anyone's thought processes were idiotic. I didn't directly insult anyone. I didn't resort to name calling.

If Houston gets bent out of shape because someone questions his post that says more about him than it does about me.

Actually, you would. It's less... weaselly.
