    Gary Sheffield -HOF?

Given that he's *limping* to 500 and his numbers are steroid inflated to even get that far.....AND with his big mouth. I say no he won't make it, and after the first couple of times being turned down he'll alienate even more people by playing the race card.

I think he'll get there eventually, but will likely have a long wait.

He shouldn't because of all the reasons you named, but he will because the process for HOF voting is screwed up.

Assuming he doesn't have a miraculous turn which gives him 3 or 4 wonderful seasons in the next 5 years....i doubt hes got any chance in todays age.

Probably because he is a FORMER Yankee. If he was currently with the Yanks he'd be biased against him.

    Numbers-wise i think he deserves it, 500HR, 250 SB, 290/395/517 142 Ops+, top 10 in MVP voting 6 times.

But his outspokenness and poor attitude (who remebers him chucking GB into the stands cuz he wanted out of MIL) may hold him back similar to Jim Rice.

    Re: Gary Sheffield -HOF?

First of all, lets not assume that every person linked to Barry Bonds is only hitting well because he did steroids. also, i don't see what having a big mouth has to do with anything.

gary sheffield, despite all of his faults, was consistently one of the best all around hitters in the majors. and unlike a lot of other possible roiders, his numbers don't really pop out as being completely unrealistic. high home run season of 43, for example, is not something that sticks out as "oh there's no way he could do that without roids." furthermore, even once they started testing for roids, his numbers didn't drop off. he was still hitting just as well as he usually did in 2007, until he tore his labrum with detroit.

also, he had a much better all around game than guys like McGwire and Sosa, especially with the batting average. Sheff's career average is around .294, with Sosa and McGwire both below .280.

i should also mention that he got injured in his career more than you would expect from a roider. I take him at his word when he says that he took the clear with bonds once or whatever it was because, honestly, Sheff doesn't strike me as the kind of guy who would lie about that. He doesn't seem to give a **** enough about his perception for that.

so , that's why he should get there. Will he? i have no idea.

Actually, haveacigar, Sheffield WAS one of the first names to pop out for roids, at the same time that Bonds, Giambi, Sosa and McGwire were mentioned.

As for his eligibility...I don't think he will get voted in, though who really knows these days??? All I can say for sure is that I personally probably wouldn't vote for him...I acknowledge that he was a really good player, but I just never saw him as a GREAT player (yes, I do have high standards for who is great, and as far as I'm concerned, a HoF is for great players only).

i know he was linked, i know he was in the mitchell report, that doesn't mean his entire career is roids aided.

Stat wise, I say yes, character wise, I say yes.

With the BWOAA vote for him, probably no.

I'd vote for him without question.

I doubt he'll get elected though, at least not by the BBWAA. I'd say he has a better chance with the Veteran's Committee far in the future.
