You're right. I should have looked at those insurmountable 4 and 5.5 game leads before making such a ludicris statement
When Pudge first came up, he was already a great defensive force who had obvious offensive potential. During the bulk of his career, he remained a fine defensive catcher and became far above average for the position as a hitter. The last few years, he'd been well below average as a hitter. though he is having a decent year with the bat this year. I'm not really sure how his defense stacks up now.
I'd still call it a great trade for the Yankees, because he's so much better than what they had there.
You've got to give me odds...picking 2 of 4 playoff teams is hard enough especially when i'm picking two that are in 3rd place.
and...NO!!! I'm not going to bet...because then I'd end up wanting the yankees to make it. Yuck
What?
This was a trade to shore up a hole for the NOW. They can't make trades where they trade away big guys for prospects, because they're always in contention, and teams in contention rarely, if ever, make such trades. The Yankees farm system IS very good.Originally Posted by RedSoxRockies
Pudge is easily a better defensive catcher than Estrada.Originally Posted by RedSoxRockies
This year, Pudge is hitting .295/.338/.417 with a 101 OPS+. Estrada had a -1 OPS+ in 53 at bats, hitting .170/.200/.170. His OPS+'s the last 3 years - 74, 92, 78. Pudge's - 94, 97, 85.
Pudge is a slightly above average bat for a catcher, with above average defensive skills. Johnny Estrada is not good.
A rental for both teams really.Originally Posted by m4rk6

LOLOL. Rivera, closer of the Yankees, is mediocre. Farnsworth, now not a Yankee, is one of the top relievers in the game. WOW.Originally Posted by metsguy234
He's 36 and still swings an average stick. He's been ridiculously durable for a catcher. Barring a massive unforeseen collapse, he'll reach 3,000.Originally Posted by metsguy234

Yeah. See, this is why people don't take anything you say seriously when it comes to the Yankees. The team a player plays on does not change how good of a player he is. Please, try to be a little less biased.Originally Posted by metsguy234

LOL ARE YOU SERIOUS?!?!?!?! Man, you're a funny kid.
Posada has been a well above average hitter every year of his career since he became a regular except 1999. His career OPS+ is 124. Jason Varitek's career high is 122. Perhaps he's been average defensively, but overall, Posada has been a very above average catcher because he is a very good hitter.Posada=average catcher

This decade has not been great on catchers. Now the '70s and '90s, however, were loaded
