All this is subjective expression, the value of the trade will be judged OVER time - the first time line will be if the Yankees improve enough to get to the playoffs, the Second if they do Well in the playoffs (ie AL Championship series or beyond) & lastly HOW those prospects pan out....
On Paper the Yankees did very, very well because Nady & Marte were considered the top players' "available" & only giving up Tabata & 3 marginal prospects is a great deal Yankees wise.....again the Pirates have decided to rebuild AGAIN & are set to break a record ("most consecutive" losing seasons - sad for such a historied franchise)
Go Yankees!!!!!
I think if we threw in Ian Kennedy, we could've got Bay instead of Nady.

Really, is there any need to say this? This goes for every single trade, ever. Obviously, a trade that looks good now can turn out to be a bust. A trade that looks bad can turn out to be great. Obviously it's impossible to say exactly what this trade will do for both teams, but it's certainly perfectly fine to discuss the merits of each side and the likely possibilities. There's no need to say "We won't know until we know how all the players pan out."
Anyway, looks like the Pirates are actually getting Jeff Karstens (blah) and Daniel McCutchen instead of Kontos and Coke. Karstens is worse than both, but i like McCutchen better than both of them.
Yankees Get:
NADY
BA HR RBI OBP SLG
.330 13 57 .383 .535
MARTE
ERA W L SO WHIP
3.47 4 0 47 1.16
Pirates Get:
TABATA
BA HR RBI OBP SLG
.248 3 36 .310 .320
OHLENDORF
ERA W L
4.03 1 1
MCCUTCHEN
ERA W L
3.58 4 6
KARSTENS
ERA W L
3.80 6 4
Straight Up it looks like the Yanks got the better deal. I would've held onto Tabata but if I had a choice between him and Karstens I'd have rather seen Karstens stick. Not to worried about McCutchen and Ohlendorf
This trade should pay immediate dividends for the Yankees though it might prove better in the long-term for the Pirates.
It sucks that Daniel McCutchen is actually involved in the trade, considering he is ready and should be a solid back of the rotation (4 or 5) pitcher. But we have a TON of pitching depth in the minors, so McCutchen was definitely expendable.
This whole trade is in the Yanks favor.....
In no way does that mean they're equals. Any scout will tell you that Kennedy projects as nothing more than a solid back-end rotation pitcher, a #4 or a #5, and any scout would tell you that Buchholz projects as a front of the rotation starter. Kennedy isn't even on the same planet as Buck, in terms of potential.
But I refuse to get further involved in another Red Sox - Yankees prospects debate, or any other debate, with incredibly biased fans. I am VERY fair to the Yankees and the trades they make and the way I see their prospects and whatever else, if you can't exercise the same courtesy for my team when trying to have an intelligent debate I just won't get involved.

Agreed. The Yankees picked up a couple solid Major Leaguers and didn't give up anything of real immediate value. If Tabata reaches his potential down the road, then this looks a lot better for the Pirates, but as with all prospect deals its a steal for the Yankees right now.

With the Yanks they can always buy TABATA back later!
