Re: 2001 Seattle Mariners-Can they recreate the Magic?

    Mariners win Game 1, 7-0

The Mariners take game one by the score of 7-0. They lit up Cleveland starter CC Sabathia for 5 runs in 2 2/3 innings. They got one run in the first on a John Olerud RBI ground out and one in the second on a Kenji Johjima RBI double. Then in the 3rd inning, the Mariners sent Sabathia to the showers early with 3 runs. Capped off with a Ken Griffey Jr homerun.

In the 8th inning, the M's added two insurance runs with a Kenji Johjima two-run homerun off Brian Sweeney.

All of this was not needed as Joel Pineiro was magnificent. Going 8 innings of shutout ball and Sean Green pitched a perfect 9th to seal the win.

Re: 2001 Seattle Mariners-Can they recreate the Magic?

    Griffey Comes Up Big Again

The Seattle Mariners are just one win away from returning to the ALCS for the first time since 1995 with a 4-1 win over the Cleveland Indians. The game was tied 1-1 in the bottom of the eight when Ken Griffey Jr hit a 3-run shot off of Juan Rincon to give the M's the lead.

Both starting pitchers, Bartolo Colon and Freddy Garcia gave up only one run. Colon went 7 innings while Garcia went 7 2/3. Cleveland struck first with a Kenny Lofton homerun in the third and the Mariners answered back in the fifth with a Ichiro Suzuki homerun.

The game ended up to be a battle of the bullpens and the Mariners bullpen won the battle. Rafael Soriano went 2/3 of an inning to pickup the win and JJ Putz closed out the game by pitching the final 2/3 of an inning.

Juan Rincon of the Indians gave up the three runs in 2/3 of an inning and Rafael Betancourt finished up the eight.

The Mariners look to sweep the Indians on Wednesday in Cleveland.

Re: 2001 Seattle Mariners-Can they recreate the Magic?

    M's get blown out 13-3

The Mariners were killed today by the score of 13-3. In this battle of lefties, Cleveland's Cliff Lee was the obvious winners. Cleveland scored 6 times in the first inning off Seattle Starter Ron Villone as he only lasted 1 2/3 innings. The inning started with a Kenny Lofton single and escalated from there. The first run came on a Nomar Garciaparra RBI groundout. Then Ben Broussard singled in a run. After that Marty Cordova and Travis Fryman both doubled into right field for RBI's. The final run came on a Tim Salmon single to center that scored Cordova. Both Lofton and Salmon had two hits in that inning.

The Mariners answered with a run in the 2nd on a Juan Gonzalez homerun and two runs in the 3rd on a Carlos Guillen RBI triple and a John Olerud RBI single. But that was not enough.

Cleveland scorched 6 more runs of reliever Cha Seung Baek in the fifth inning. It all started with 3 singles to start the inning. Then Victor Martinez walked to load the bases. Jim Thome hit a 2-run single and Ben Broussard had a 3-run triple to end the scoring.

Cleveland added another run in the 6th but it did not matter.

Seattle still has two games to win one game.

Re: 2001 Seattle Mariners-Can they recreate the Magic?

    Mariners Move on to ALCS

The Seattle Mariners are moving on the American League Championship Series for only the second time in team history with a 8-7 win over the Cleveland Indians. Brett Tomko pushed through five hard earned innings to get the win. Tomko gave up 7 runs in five innings but his offensive backed him up. Seattle scored two runs in the first with a John Olerud RBI ground out and a Juan Gonzalez homerun.
Cleveland answered right back two of their own runs in the first. They scored on a Victor Martinez RBI ground out and a Nomar Garciaparra RBI single. They also scored another run in the second with a Zach Sorenson homerun.
Seattle scored three more runs in the third with a Juan Gonzalez three-run home run, his second of the day.
Cleveland battled back for another run in the bottom of the third when Jim Thome hit a home run to center field.
Seattle scored another three runs in the top of the fifth with a John Olerud RBI single and a Juan Gonzalez 2-run double to take the lead 8-4.
Cleveland scored 3 more runs off Tomko with a Martinez RBI double, a Jim Thome RBI ground out and a Nomar Garciaparra RBI single.
After that, both bullpens shut down the opposing offensives for the remaining 4 innings. Sean Green pitched 1 2/3 innings of shutout ball, Arthur Rhodes one and JJ Putz pitched the final 1 1/3 inning to get the save.

The Mariners will face the New York Yankees who beat the Rangers 3-2 starting Monday.

Re: 2001 Seattle Mariners-Can they recreate the Magic?

    M's Lose Game 1, 6-1

Game one of the ALCS had not gone like the Mariners planned. They ended up losing to the New York Yankees 6-1. The Yankees scored their first run in the second on a Ben Grieve RBI double. They added another in the 4th on a Ben Grieve sacrifice fly. Then in the 5th, the Yankees scored three runs before Seattle starter Joel Pineiro could record an out. Nick Johnson started the inning with a walk and then Steve Finley singled. Chuck Knoblauch delivered the blow to the jugular with a three-run homerun to left.

That was it for Pineiro as Clint Nageotte entered the game. Nageotte saved the bullpen as he went 5 innings and gave up 1 run. That run came on a Jermaine Dye RBI single in the 9th.

The Mariners could not figure out Yankees starter Mike Mussina. Moose gave up only one run in 8 2-3 innings to get the win. The M's lone run came on a Ken Griffey Jr homerun in the bottom of the fifth.

Re: 2001 Seattle Mariners-Can they recreate the Magic?

Mariners Even up Series at 1

Not wanting to go 0-2, the Seattle Mariners won game two of the ALCS to even up the series 1-1. The Mariners won the game by the score of 5-2. The M's were down early when Derek Jeter hit a 2-run homerun off of starter Freddy Garcia in the first. But the Mariners responded in the second when Kenji Johjima had a RBI single and Ichiro Suzuki walked with the bases loaded.

Things stayed the same until the bottom of the sixth when the M's scored the final 3 runs. Aaron Hill singled in home Bill Mueller who had led off with a double. After a hit by Johjima and a ground out by Ichiro, Carlos Guillen came up big with a 2-run single to center.

All this time, Freddy Garcia calmed down and pitched 6 clutch innings and the bullpen took care of the rest. Arthur Rhodes took care of some key lefties, Sean Green took care of the righties and JJ Putz took care of the 9th to get the save.

The next 3 games will be played in New York as the Mariners will try to finish off the series.

Re: 2001 Seattle Mariners-Can they recreate the Magic?

Mariners win game 3, inch closer to World Series

By winning game 3 of the ALCS 8-5, the Mariners are just 2 wins away from reaching the World Series for the first time in team history. The Mariners scored 1 in the first on a John Olerud RBI groundout. Then they scored 3 in the second on a Derek Jeter error, a Ichiro RBI triple and a Carlos Guillen RBI double. In the 3rd, we scored 2 runs on a Juan Gonzalez homerun and on a wild pitch.

But then in the bottom of the 3rd, the Yankees scored 4 runs on a Chuck Knoblauch RBI triple, a Alfonso Soriano RBI ground out, a Jorge Posada RBI single and on a Ron Villone wild pitch. It got closer in the 5th when the Yankees added another run on a Posada RBI Single.

The M's added some insurance runs in the 8th on back-to-back RBI doubles by Carlos Guillen and Scott Spiezio.

The M's bullpen closed out the Yankees to finish off the victory. Villone went 5 innings and gave up 5 runs to pick up the win.

Re: 2001 Seattle Mariners-Can they recreate the Magic?

Mariners one game away from World Series

The Mariners beat the Yankees in a game that took a little under 4 hours by the score of 6-3 in 11 innings.

The scoring began in the fourth inning when Ichiro led off with a double and Carlos Guillen switched places with him a few pitches later. Then in the fifth, Edgar Martinez blasted a homerun to Monument Park to give the M's a 2-0 lead.

Then in the bottom of the eight, the Yankees scored 3 runs of Brett Tomko on a Steve Finley two run homerun and on a Alfonso Soriano solo homerun.

All seemed bleak for the Mariners as the Yankees had the best closer that ever lived Mariano Rivera. But somehow, the M's scored a run off of Rivera to tie the game. Carlos Guillen singled to left. Then Scott Spiezio sacrificed him over to second. Then Juan Gonzalez singled in the tying run.

In the bottom of the 9th, Aaron Taylor came in and got his man and Arthur Rhodes took care of the lefties in order.

Then in the top of the 11th, the M's scored 3 runs to take the lead. Guillen and Spiezio walked and Dave Roberts beat out a bunt single. Then Ken Griffey Jr drove in two on a 2-run single into center field. Two outs later, Jaime Burke , who had came in as a defensive replacement, singled in Roberts from second.

In the bottom of the 11th, it was lights out time for JJ Putz. He retired the three batters in order while striking out two of them.

Both starters pitched excellently as Tomko and Andy Pettitte pitched 8 innings.

The Mariners will try to beat the Yankees today to move on to the World Series.

Re: 2001 Seattle Mariners-Can they recreate the Magic?

M's Lose Game 5, Try to Win Pennant At Home

The M's were blown out in game five by the Yankees 11-1. Joel Pineiro was highly inefficient as he gave up 6 runs in 4 1/3 innings. Clint Nageotte was not as effective as he gave up 5 runs in 3 innings. The M's lone run came in the 6th on a John Olerud homerun.

New York scored 1 in the second, 6 in the fifth, 1 in the sixth and 3 in the eighth. Their first run came on a Ben Grieve homerun. The six runs in the fifth came on Chuck Knoblauch RBI single, an Alfonso Soriano RBI single, Derek Jeter 2-run double, Jorge Posada RBI double and a Nick Johnson RBI double. Then the run in the sixth came on a Derek Jeter RBI single. They capped it all off in the eighth with a Ben Grieve RBI single, a Nick Johnson RBI walk and a David Justice RBI single.

Games 6 and 7 will be played in Seattle and the M's will try to win the pennant before the best fans in baseball.

Re: 2001 Seattle Mariners-Can they recreate the Magic?

    MY, OH MY

The Seattle Mariners have just won game 5 of the ALCS to win the American League Pennant. The M's won a close on against the Yankees 3-2. Seattle struck first with back-to-back doubles by Edgar Martinez and Bill Mueller.

But then the Yankees answered back to take the lead 2-1. Jermaine Dye hit a 2-run homerun to give the Yankees the lead.

But then the Mariners came back with two runs of their own in the 7 inning. Ken Griffey Jr led off the inning with a homerun off of Ted Lilly. Martinez then hit a double and Aaron Hill drove him home 3 batters later.

Arthur Rhodes took care of the lefties and Rafael Soriano pitched the final 1 1/3 innings to pick up the save as JJ Putz was not available today.

The Mariners will play the Atlanta Braves in the World Series. The Braves were the National League Wild Card winners with a record of 104-58.

Re: 2001 Seattle Mariners-Can they recreate the Magic?

    Off To A Good Start

The Mariners have gotten one game closer to their ultimate goal as they beat the Atlanta Braves 4-3. Brett Tomko went 7 2/3 to pick up the win. He was also 1 for 2 at the plate. Seattle got off to a quick start as Ichiro led off the game with a double and scored on a Ken Griffey Jr. single. Then in the second inning, Seattle scored again on a Ichiro RBI single. A key part to scoring the run was the Tomko bunt that sent Aaron Hill to second base.

Atlanta got on the board in the third inning when Rafael Furcal hit a RBI single as well. Both Seattle and Atlanta exchanged zeros until the 6th inning where Seattle added two more runs.

Third baseman Bill Mueller hit a two-run homerun to right field off of Tom Glavine. Manager Bobby Cox had have enough of Glavine and pulled him after that.

Then in the eighth with Tomko still in the game, Quilvio Veras singled to right which scored pinch hitter Paul Bako from second. After retiring Andruw Jones, Tomko was lifted for Rafael Soriano. Soriano got his only man, Chipper Jones to fly out to left.

The Braves made it interesting in the ninth off of closer JJ Putz. After getting the first two outs, Mark DeRosa singled to left and took second on defensive indifference. Brian Giles singles to center moving DeRosa to third. Then pinch hitter Kurt Abbott singled to right-center to drive in DeRosa. But then Putz closed the door when Furcal stuck out to end the game.

Re: 2001 Seattle Mariners-Can they recreate the Magic?

    Garcia Wins Pitchers Duel

Game two of the World Series ended up to be what many would consider a pitchers duel. Both starters Freddy Garcia and Kevin Millwood pitched 8 strong innings but Millwood gave up two runs in the 4th to lose the game.

The first 3 innings went by fast as no runs were scored. But then in the 4th inning, Seattle started a rally. With one out, both John Olerud and Juan Gonzalez walked setting the stage for Ken Griffey Jr. Junior ripped a double down the left field line for two RBI's. This ended up to be the only runs in the game.

JJ Putz came in the ninth and went 1-2-3 with two K's to seal the win for the M's.

Games 3-5 will be played in Seattle. So make your way to the ballpark to cheer on the home team.
