Blanton traded from A's to Phils

Joe Blanton was traded to the Phillies for 3 minor leaguers. I'm surprised to see Beane deal Blanton when his value is at a lowpoint, but he got a pretty good haul for him. Adrian Cardenas, Josh Outman, and Matthew Spencer.

Cardenas is the top pure second base prospect in theminors. Outman has been relieving in the minors, but has 4th-starter upside, and Spencer is an outfielder, but not a very good prospect at all.

I think he traded Blanton at a good time...the Phillies needed another arm, and the A's got Cardenas in return...sure, it might take him a few years to crack the bigs but im sure Mr. Beane knows what he's doing...

Beane seems to have a never ending supply of arms that he deals to restock his farm system.

My number 1 rule when assessing trades between teams is quite simple: If Beane is involved in the deal, I assume he's getting the better end of the deal

    heh

As long as he doesn't start thinking that way, it should continue.

He did sell low. But what he got back from the Phillies is still surprising. Just the fact that Beane got back their best (if not best, at least top two) hitting prospect, and perhaps the best 2nd base prospect in the Majors is a good deal.

Perhaps now this means that Mark Ellis is on the market? Surely at least he won't be signed to an extension of any kind (I think I heard rumors they were talking about it).

The universal Beane butt kissing is getting close to the universal Yankee butt kissing.

I heard Beane on the radio say that they were leaning toward resigning Ellis. I think he didn't want to pay him much though, he down played his value alot.

Was this before or after the Blanton trade?

this was before. About a week to two weeks ago on the bay area's sports talk station, KNBR. I think it might have been on the second of july. He didn't commit to saying for sure one way or the other, but it did sound like he was definately considering it, for the right price.

I like the fact the Phillies are being aggressive for the present.
