    You know, I have had several hundred black friends over the years, and have asked several of them about the "African American" term. Many of them find being called "African American" condescending at least, if not outright insulting.

    As one of my best friends once said to me: "I'm not African! My family has been here for generations!"

    I'm respectful and will call someone whatever they want to be called, normally it's their name, ma'am or sir.
