I certainly wasn't thinking anything about race. I was enjoying the bombs.
Always some jackass that's gotta try and wedge a "socially relevant" comment into any media event these days.![]()
It was probably Rick Reilly. I saw a lot of people complaining about him over at Baseball Think Factory, along with mentions of people at a Yankees blog complaining about him.
It's really pathetic.
I just heard the comments online...listened to what he was saying....sounds like his brain fell out on national tv.
Reilly also said "It's a lousy night to be an atheist!" during Hamilton's display of power....which is an incredibly weird thing to say.
I didn't hear the comments, but if this is all that he said^ I don't think it's offensive. Especially if it was Rick Reilly who said it. I never take him seriously anyway, he is kinda like Norman Chad where he is suppposed to be entertaining/Funny. I think everybody needs to lighten up a little bit..."8 out of the nine contestants are white, it looks like a Kiwanis Club meeting"
I don't.
It's a racist, divisive comment.
What's Reilly implying? It's either one of two things:
a) Blacks aren't good enough to compete in the Derby, or
b) Whites need Major League Baseball to cheat/discriminate in order to participate.
Reilly may have been trying to be cute. Maybe it was his idea of a relevant comment. (He has so few) Either way, it was not funny, and it certainly doesn't help any 'relevant' issues.
Retired Dynasties I'm Proud of
To Rule in Kansas City Part I and Part II (Kansas City Royals 1969-73, Hall of Fame)
Cardinal Sins (St. Louis Cardinals 1976-78) and it's sequel:
Diverting Destiny (Montreal Expos 1994)
Script for my Requiem (New Orleans Blues (fictional) 1954)
I don't think he was implying anything. I think he was making an observation. And his job is not to help with any relevant issues. People read way to much into this. They create an issue where their is no issue. Trust me they're alot more racist and divisive things going on out their in the world than some guy making some comment. Where is all the outrage over all the racial injustices being carried out on a day- to day basis?
I agree and don't think that Hamilton said anything wrong. I think that the "It's a lousy night to be an atheist!" comment was very stupid to say. I heard another one that might also be this bozo. It was during one of the earlier ABs and an annoucer (presumably Reilly) said something to the affect that "he didn't need steroids for that one!" It really frustrated me that an announcer would bring this up. Baseball is trying to heal and some guys just try to sabatoge it. I was very disappointed anytime I heard this guy's voice tonight.
