Top prospect Bill Hall called up

Brewers prospect Bill Hall was hitting .289 at the time of his call up

After the severity of Henry Blanco's injury was determined on Tuesday, a sprained finger that will land him on the DL, the Brew Crew called up top shortstop prospect Bill Hall to take his roster spot.

When asked if he was excited about his call up he said "Of course I am. I've just made it to the big stage; I've realized a dream," and when asked if he thought he'd get any sleep he just laughed and said "I doubt it, I'll probably be running on adrenaline all week."

Hall was hitting .289/.365/.465 in AA at the time of his call-up, as well as whacking 12 homers and driving home 65 runs.

Re: Something Brewing in Milwaukee (2000-????)

    August 2000 Milwaukee Brewers Update

Brewers rookie SS Bill Hall is hitting .309/.356/.667 with five homers and 14 RBI's in 81 AB's

    Team Stats:
    Overall Record: 52-81
    August Record: 10-18
    Pythagorean Record: 51-82
Current Standings: Sixth place, 48 games back
    Team ERA: 5.00
    Team Batting Average: .248
    Runs Scored: 571
    Runs Allowed: 722

    Team Leaders:
    Wins: A.J. Burnett (8)
    ERA: A.J. Burnett (4.03)
    Strikeouts: Ben Sheets (150)
    Saves: Curtis Leskanic (16)
    Innings Pitched: Ben Sheets (191)

    Batting Average: Ron Belliard (.283)
Home Runs: Geoff Jenkins + Vernon Wells (23)
    RBI's: Geoff Jenkins (86)
    Steals: Vernon Wells (10)
    Runs: Geoff Jenkins (71)

Recap: After this month that #1 pick is looking very likely. Only a few teams have worse records than we do, and they've all played more games than we have. Our usually solid pitching had a rough go of it in August, with A.J. Burnett and Ben Sheets ERA's both going up almost half of a run. Valerio de los Santos transitioned very well into the closers role, however, and has not allowed a run in his last 10 appearances, spanning 11 innings, and has logged five saves in those appearances. Vernon Wells had a great month and that hot streak I spoke of at the end of July did happen. One of our biggest offensive contributors this month, however, was rookie callup Bill Hall. Hall hit .309/.356/.667 with five homers, 14 RBI's, 10 doubles, two triples, and 14 runs in 22 games and 81 AB's, and will remain the starting shortstop at least until he cools off.

    Pitching:

    Pitching Notes:
    • de los Santos settled into the closers role very well. Hes gone 7/8 in save opportunities on the season and currently registers a .216 BAA and a 2.60 ERA, dropping his ERA significantly since assuming the closers role.
    • Curtis Leskanic has also reacted well to being lowered to setup, lowering his ERA by around two full runs since his role reduction and seeing his BAA currently settle at .211. The change of roles has given the Brewers a deadly backend of the bullpen when they can actually get a lead late into the game.
    • A.J. Burnett and Ben Sheets both had a rough month, as Burnett has failed to make it through six innings in any of his last three starts and saw his ERA with the Brewers creep up over 4.00 for the first time, while Sheets has an ERA of 5.32 over his last 10 games.

    Batting:

    Batting Notes:
    • The 3-5 hitters in our lineup, Vernon Wells, Geoff Jenkins, and Tyler Houston, have provided plenty of power, combining for 64 homeruns, but also combine to hit just .249.
    • Bill Hall has been excellent since his callup, hitting .309/.356/.667, and has made just one error in 188 innings.
    • Despite Geoff Jenkins meager .262 batting average, he has still managed to post an OPS of .827.

Re: Something Brewing in Milwaukee (2000-????)

    A look into the future....

3B David Wright is just one of many highly touted prospects in the Brewers organization

With September callups upon, what better time than now to take a look at some of the Brewers top prospects and young players, on a position-by-position basis, and see what the team may look like in 3 or 4 years down the road.

    Catcher:

    Current Starter: Henry Blanco
Blanco is not a very good catcher, to be bluntly honest. He doesn't hit well and his defense is only slightly better than average, and not even close to good enough to make up for the lack of offense.

    Catcher of the future: --
This is a big gaping hole in the organization right now, and its probably the position that rookie GM would least like to have a hole. The team doesn't even have another catcher in the organization besides Raul Casanova, and he sure as h*** ain't the future. Look for the team to look at catchers at the top of the draft next year, or to try to acquire a young one (Victor Martinez anyone?) via a trade this off-season.

    First base:

    Current Starter: Kevin Barker
Barker is a solid, young major league first basemen. He can hit for a good average with a good eye to get on base, as well as playing above average defense. However, he doesn't possess a whole lot of power and isn't likely to improve much if at all. Hes a decent player, but he isn't the future.

First basemen of the future: Adrian Gonzalez
Just drafted this year, the 18 year old Gonzalez appears to have a bright future. Gonzalez hits and throws left handed, and has shown promise at the plate in his brief stint in pro ball thus far. He has hit .331/.381/.512, in 127 at bats, with four homers and 24 RBI's for the Rookie League Helena Brewers. He should also become a very good defensive 1B down the road. However, he is a bit of a health concern and at only 18 he is at least 3 years away, and probably closer to five, and a lot could happen in that time.

    Second base:

    Current Starter: 2B Ronnie Belliard
Belliard has proven himself a more than capable ML second basemen at this early stage of his career. He has slugged only .395 this season, but otherwise has hit will with a batting average of .283 and an OBP of .333. Barring an injury, he will set career highs this season in hits, doubles, home runs, and run, and if he closes out with a good month could surpass his rookie year batting average of .295. He also has good range and plays a good second base.

Second basemen of the future: Ronnie Belliard
At just 25 years of age, Belliard is the second basemen of the now and then.

    Third base:

    Current Starter: Tyler Houston
Tyler has displayed good power this season, but has been atrocious otherwise. His 18 homers are a close third on the team, but he has hit just .222/.278/.390 on the season, for a whopping .668 OPS. Throw in the fact that hes struck out 105 times and plays terrible defense and he clearly has no more place on this team.

Third basemen of the future: David Wright
The future couldn't possibly be brighter at this position. Wright is only 17 years old (he turns 18 in December) and is already knocking on the door to take over at 3B for the next 20 years for this franchise. He has absolutely killed the ball with the A-ball Brevard County Manatees, hitting .422/.517/.739, for an incredible 1.256 OPS, as well as smacking 15 homers and driving home 61 runs in just 199 AB's with the team. His defense could use some work, but he has no health concerns and is easily the best positional prospect in the organization. He'll be a September call-up and despite being only 18 years old on opening day of next season, he could be manning 3B full-time by then.

    Shortstop:

    Current Starter: Bill Hall
Hall was at AA just a month ago, but has excelled in the major leagues and will hold down the shortstop job for the rest of the season. In AA he was hitting .289/.365/.465 in 357 at bats, but he has topped that at the major league level, after skipping AAA, with a .309/.356/.667 line. His defense is ugly to say the least and he could be moved to another position like LF down the road, but he can really swing it.

Shortstop of the future: Bill Hall
Hall is only 20 years old and will most certainly be a part of the future of this team. However, he is an atrocious defender at one of the most important defensive positions on the field, so that, in addition to rumblings that the team may try to bring in Alex Rodriguez via free agency this offseason, may prompt a position change down the road.

    Outfield:

Current Starters: LF Mark Sweeney, CF Vernon Wells, RF Geoff Jenkins
Sweeney, Wells, and Jenkins have made for a solid core of outfielders this season. Sweeney has posted a line of .280/.362/.445 in 364 AB's, and Jenkins and Wells have each hit 23 homers so far this season. All three are also average or better defenders, with Jenkins and Wells being Gold Glove caliber defenders. However Sweeney is already 30 years old and can't be a starter on a contending team, like the team hopefully plans to be in a few years, but Wells and Jenkins should both be big parts of this team for several more years.

Outfielders of the future: LF Geoff Jenkins, CF Vernon Wells, RF Josh Hamilton
A great core of young players to hold down the outfield. It would certainly make for one of the best defensive outfields in years, and one that would give third base coaches nightmares with the strong arms from every field. Any one of them is capable of getting to any ball hit anywhere near them and then throwing a seed back into the infield to keep runners from advancing. It would also make a formidable force in the middle of the lineup. Jenkins and Wells have each hit 23 homers this season, and are hitting .262 and .264 respectively. Wells has posted an .802 OPS so far this season as a rookie and is one of the Brewers three rookie of the year candidates (A.J. Burnett and Ben Sheets being the other two). Hamilton had a brief stint in the majors earlier this season with the Brewers, but struggled and only hit .196, but at only age 19 he should get plenty better.

The future of the Brewers looks very promising as it stands now. With young players like David Wright and Vernon Wells in the organization this is a team that will be a force to be reckoned with three of four years down the road.

(Not sure if I'll do one for pitching because I have waaaay too many good SP prospects, in addition to Sheets and Burnett already with the team, so it would be a lot harder to establish the "future" there.)

Re: Something Brewing in Milwaukee (2000-????)

I just finished simming the last month of the season, the playoffs, and simmed through my own re-signings period . I probably won't get a chance to cover any of it until Friday, but I'm gonna see if I can sneak my September review sometime tomorrow.

Also don't be surprised if a certain offensive minded catcher finds his way to Milwaukee this offseason .

Re: Something Brewing in Milwaukee (2000-????)

    September 2000 Milwaukee Brewers Update

Jenkins led the team in home runs this season with 30

    Team Stats:
    Overall Record: 60-102
    September Record: 8-21
    Pythagorean Record: 63-99
Final Standings: Sixth place, 63 games back
    Team ERA: 4.95
    Team Batting Average: .246
    Runs Scored: 686
    Runs Allowed: 866

    Team Leaders:
    Wins: A.J. Burnett (12)
    ERA: A.J. Burnett (3.68)
    Strikeouts: Ben Sheets (169)
    Saves: Curtis Leskanic (17)
    Innings Pitched: Ben Sheets (222)

    Batting Average: Ron Belliard (.274)
    Home Runs: Geoff Jenkins (30)
    RBI's: Geoff Jenkins (102)
    Steals: Vernon Wells (11)
    Runs: Geoff Jenkins (89)

Recap: The final month of the season, September, comes to a close. It was a long, hard season for the Brewers and not much good came out of it. There were a few brightspots, however. A.J. Burnett and Ben Sheets came onto the scene as rookies and proved they're two of the top starters in the NL, and will only get better, the team traded for Vernon Wells and he has shown the ability to be at least a solid big league regular, with All-Star potential, Belliard and Jenkins both had very good season, and to put a positive spin on finishing the worst record in baseball, the Brewers will have the #1 pick in next year's draft, one game worse, or better as it may be, than the Texas Rangers. The team has a lot going for it in the farm and with the #1 pick in next year's draft this team should be one of the top teams in the league 3 or 4 years from now.

Not doing the SS's and stuff I usually do because I kind of effed up and forgot to take SS's before simming through resignings and stuff so no stats or anything to finish the season .

Re: Something Brewing in Milwaukee (2000-????)

    Season Review/Awards/Resignings/etc.

The Milwaukee Brewers won arbitration with Geoff Jenkins, Jenkins will make 3.2 million dollars next year

Season Review: 2000 was a long, rough season for the Milwaukee Brewers. They finished with the worst record in baseball by a game to the Texas Rangers, giving them the #1 pick in next year's draft, and lost their own division by a whopping 63 games to the World Champion St. Louis Cardinals. There were far more ups than downs this season, but a few ups included the emergence of A.J. Burnett, Ben Sheets, and Vernon Wells, Geoff Jenkins and Ronnie Belliard putting up strong numbers, and getting a good look at some of the team's prospects, including David Wright and Bill Hall. Now lets hand out some team awards.

    Team MVP: OF Geoff Jenkins - .263/.358/.486, 30 HR's, 102 RBI's, 89 R's
Jenkins was clearly and easily the team MVP this season. He led the team in homers, runs, RBI's, OBP, slugging percent, and OPS. He didn't hit for a particularly good batting average, only .263, but still placed third on the team in said stat. He hit 30 homers, drove in 100 runs, and scored 89. The only hitter that approached his home run total was rookie Vernon Wells with 26, no one even came close to his RBI total, and he also led the team in runs by 11.

    Team Cy Young: SP A.J. Burnett - 12-8, 3.68 ERA, 143 K's, .233 BAA, 163.2 IP (numbers all as a Brewer)
This was a closer call between the winner, Burnett, and his rotation-mate Ben Sheets. Burnett led the team in all the Pitching Triple Crown categories except strikeouts, and if you count his numbers as a Marlin he easily beats Sheets there as well. He managed to pitch a total of over 200 innings between the Marlins and Brewers, perhaps dispelling his injury concerns. At only 23 years old except Burnett to only get better from here.

    Team "glue": 2B Ronnie Belliard - .274/.325/.395, 10 HR, 53 RBI's, 5 SB's
This award is meant to go to the player that, although maybe not the most statistically important player, is the one that keeps the team together most. Belliard was that man this year. Belliard always seemed to get a hit when the team needed it most and whenever he was going good the team went well.

    Team Awards/Accomplishments:

Geoff Jenkins and Vernon Wells both received Gold Gloves for their play in the outfield.

    Team Resignings/releases:

OF Geoff Jenkins - Milwaukee Brewers won arbitration with 3.2 million dollars

    3B Tyler Houston - Released

    RP David Weathers - Released

    RP Juan Acevedo - Released

    SP Jimmy Haynes - Released

    SP Jeff D'amico - Released

    1B Mark Sweeney - Released

    SS Lou Collier - Released

    OF Lyle Mouton - Released

    SS Luis Lopez - Released

    OF James Mouton - Released

Offseason Review: The Milwaukee Brewers have a big off-season ahead. The team has holes to fill at shortstop, third base, catcher, first base, the starting rotation, and the bullpen. Bill Hall may be ready to step in and take over shortstop on a full time basis, but the team will still probably look at bringing in a veteran to platoon with him. David Wright also could probably take third base, but at just the age of 18 the team probably doesn't want to hand the reins over to him full time yet. There are a couple big time catchers on the FA market this season, Jorge Posada and Charles Johnson, and the team is indicating that it will be big players for Posada. The team has loads of pitching talent in the farm system, but it is all at the lower levels so the team will have to sign some fill-ins in the the mean time. The team has a lot of budget space to work with so filling the holes shouldn't be a problem short-term.

    Jorge headed to Milwaukee

Posada brings his 21 homers and 119 RBI's to the City of Festivals

Brewers owner Wendy Selig had allocated young General Manager John Monahan the money to bring in one big time Free Agent, and Jorge Posada became that big time Free Agent on November 6th. The team signed him to a five year deal valued at 3.85 million per year. The deal does not include any option years or a no-trade clause, however.

The signing fixes a massive hole in the Brewers organization; catcher. The team's primary catcher this season, Henry Blanco, hit a miserly .203/.257/.337 with 12 homers, 41 RBI's, and 35 runs in 126 games (413 AB's). Whereas Jorge Posada dwarfs that with his line of .274/.360/.450 and 21 jacks, 119 RBI's, and 86 runs in 159 games (624 AB's).

Of the signing GM John Monahan said, "We're ecstatic to bring in a player of Posada's ability. Not only is Posada an excellent hitter, but he is an excellent fielder. He's also been a proven winner with the Yankees and will bring a veteran, no-nonsense, winning personality to the club house."

Robin Yount simply said "He's a great player. John made an excellent choice."

Posada was equally excited about signing here as GM John Monahan was about bringing him here, saying "I know with my signing that this team is signaling a new direction, a direction of winning. I'm excited to be a part of this team's turn around and hopefully we can bring Milwaukee its first title very, very soon."

KC - Milwaukee blockbuster sends Jenkins to Kansas City

Jenkins heads to KC in return for Carlos Beltran

A big deal between the Brewers and Royals will send the face of the Brewers franchise, Geoff Jenkins (90) to Kansas City for 23 year old outfielder Carlos Beltran (92).

Although both players are very, very good, and this is a very even deal, both players are also very different.

Kansas City Royals side: In this deal the Royals get a young, talented outfielder in Geoff Jenkins. Last season, Jenkins led the Milwaukee Brewers in home runs (30), RBI's (102), on-base percentage (.358), and slugging percent (.486), despite the team finishing with the worst record in baseball. In addition to Jenkins smacking the he** out of the ball all season, he also won a Gold Glove for his fantastic defensive play in the outfield. Jenkins is a four tool player, and the only tool he lacks is speed.

Milwaukee Brewers side: The Brewers also get a young, talented outfielder in this deal. Last season Beltran posted a line of .300/.389/.589, a tier above Jenkins line of .263/.358/.486 line, and hit 39 homers and 119 RBI's. Although Beltran has yet to win a Gold Glove in his young career, he is also an extremely talented, excellent defensive outfielder. Beltran can do one thing, however, that Jenkins can not, and that is steal bases. Last season he stole just 17, but in '99 he stole 27, and could possess 40-50 steal potential. Beltran could become a 40-40, or even 50-50 player, down the road. He is easily a 5 tool player.

This is a great deal on both sides. The Brewers bring in a younger, cheaper, but also talented outfielder in Beltran, while the Royals acquire an also very talented outfielder with Jenkins.

In other news, the Brewers also announced the signing of 1B Andres Galarraga to a two year, 630 K per year contract.
