Re: Something Brewing in Milwaukee (2000-????)

lol, I didn't even realize that. I can't wait to get Hamilton to the bigs, its kind of frightening how good hes been in the minors, and he has a complete HOSE in the OF. I couldn't help but look at him in commish mode and hes actually rated as a 77, so that could come sooner rather than later, problem is hes kind of offensively challenged for the big stage, despite raking at A ball, I also don't want to bring him up too early, have him flourish for a while, and then have him flame out by the time hes 29 because I brought him up too early.

BTW, my monthly update for tomorrow probably won't be until later at night or possibly mid-afternoon

    June 2000 Milwaukee Brewers Update
Brewers rookie hurler put up an ERA of 2.78 in June

    Team Stats:
    Overall Record: 34-37
    June Record: 9-19
    Pythagorean Record: 33-48
Current Standings: 5th place, 24 games back
    Team ERA: 4.98
    Team Batting Average: .248
    Runs Scored: 366
    Runs Allowed: 440

    Team Leaders:
    Wins: John Snyder (6)
    ERA: A.J. Burnett (3.67)
    Strikeouts: Ben Sheets (83)
    Saves: Curtis Leskanic (13)
    Innings Pitched: Ben Sheets (116.2)

    Batting Average: Ronnie Belliard (.293)
    Home Runs: Vernon Wells (15)
    RBI's: Geoff Jenkins (53)
    Steals: Vernon Wells (5)
    Runs: Geoff Jenkins (42)

Recap: June was our worst month yet. We managed only a 9-19 record, largely because of how our offensive production plummeted after trading shortstop Jose Hernandez and center fielder Marquis Grissom. The miserable 9-19 record is also likely simply of the team regressing to its talent level, or lack thereof, as well. There were a few bright spots in June, however, most notably Ben Sheets. Sheets was 2-1 with a 2.78 ERA, 25 K's, 8 walks, a BAA of .215 in 39 innings pitched. Sheets went eight or more innings in four of his five June starts, including a complete game shutout over the Astros on the 26th, and walked no more than two batters in any of those five starts. Wells also a dip in his batting average, but nearly doubled his homerun total in a single month. I knew this poor performance was coming, and I don't expect it to stop anytime soon.

    Pitching:

    Pitching Notes:
    • Sheets was 2-1 with a 2.78 ERA, 25 K's, 8 walks, a BAA of .215 in 39 innings pitched. Sheets went eight or more innings in four of his five June starts, including a complete game shutout over the Astros on the 26th, and walked no more than two batters in any of those five starts.
    • Burnett continues to anchor the staff, along with Sheets, and has posted an ERA of 3.11 since he was acquired from the Marlins for Burnitz and Wright.
    • Curtis Leskanic has been horrible in the closers role, posting an ERA of almost six (5.97), and registering nine losses and a K:BB ratio of almost 1:1 (22 K's to 20 BB's).
    • Valerio de los Santos has been superb in the bullpen and could see himself moved to the closers role.
    • John Snyder has provided a solid presence as a #3 starter, going 6-7 with a 4.31 ERA. However, he has walked 58 batters in 108.2 innings and a BAA of .290, so he could implode at any moment.
    • Jimmy Haynes and Jeff D'Amico have combined to post an ERA of 6.25, and if I had a better alternative to either, be it FA'cy or otherwise, I would go to it.

    Batting:

    Batting Notes:
    • The offense was pretty horrid all around this month, as Belliard saw his average slip to under .300 for the first time this season, Wells average dropped about 15 points, and Jenkins slipped to below .260.
    • Sweeney, Wells, and Jenkins are the only hitters slugging about .400.
    • In this case I really think the picture says it all so I'll leave it at that....

I'm sure you've noticed that my posts have become a little more infrequent, and I assure you that I am not losing interest in this at all. However I just got back into league play so thats taking a bit of my mogul time and my schedule has become a little more busy, but I am NOT abandoning this.

Yeah, hopefully. I'm really enjoying this one, and I think the faster pace is helping significantly.

Re: Something Brewing in Milwaukee (2000-????)

Thome puts on a show in the Derby

Thome blasted a total of 15 homers

This year's home run derby featured a lot of young, talented power hitters, and may have signified a changing of the guard. It included the likes of young superstars like Alex Rodriguez, Frank Thomas, Andruw Jones, and Jason Giambi, as well as slightly older, but still young, superstars like Ken Griffey Jr., Jim Thome, Jim Edmonds, Brian Giles, and lastly Jose Canseco.

The first round proved to be an exciting one. Jim Thome of the Cleveland Indians blasted a round leading nine homers, followed by Jones, Sosa, and Canseco, all of whom hit seven.

    HTML Code:
    FIRST ROUND (10 Outs)

    PLAYER HOMERS
    Jim Thome (CLE) 9
    Jose Canseco (TBD) 7
    Andruw Jones (ATL) 7
    Sammy Sosa (CHC) 7
    Ken Griffey (CIN) 6
    Brian Giles (PIT) 5
    Frank Thomas (CHW) 5
    Jason Giambi (OAK) 4
    Alex Rodriguez (SEA) 4
    Jim Edmonds (STL) 4
The second round wasn't quite as exciting, but was fun nonetheless. Thome led the way again with five and was followed into the final round by Jose Canseco with his four.

    HTML Code:
    SECOND ROUND (5 Outs)

    PLAYER HOMERS
    Jim Thome (CLE) 5
    Jose Canseco (TBD) 4
    Sammy Sosa (CHC) 3
    Andruw Jones (ATL) 2
In the final round Canseco triumped over Thome, despite Thome hitting the most home runs in the first two rounds and the most in the entire competition. Thome may have provided the most excitement, but ultimately it was Canseco who won.

    HTML Code:
    FINAL ROUND (5 Outs)

    PLAYER HOMERS
    JOSE CANSECO (TBD) 3
    Jim Thome (CLE) 1

         WINNER: Jose Canseco

Unless I have a ton of people absolutely dying to read about the ASG I think I'm just going to skip writing about it and just post the boxscore and recap.

I think the real question is:

Does anyone EVER really look forward to the All-Star Game?

I know that I'm more interested in your season...

Re: Something Brewing in Milwaukee (2000-????)

    Sweeney goes down

Brew Crew first basemen Mark Sweeney will miss 2 1/2 weeks with a sprained thumb

Brewers first basemen Mark Sweeney will be sidelined for approximately 2 1/2 weeks after spraining his thumb on July 16th in a loss against the Orioles.

The injury comes at a very unfortunate time for the team. Sweeney had been one of the teams key contributors on offense with his. 343 OBP and nine homers and the team has floundered badly in July posting a record of just 4-9 and lost their first seven games in the month. Sweeney said of his injury "Its frustrating. The team hasn't played well this month and I really want to be out there to help the team win some games, but theres nothing I can do now except make sure I get my rehab in and hope I heal quickly."

The Brewers called up 19 year old hotshot outfielder Josh Hamilton to take Sweeney's spot on the roster. Hamilton was hitting .315/.414/.548 with three homers, 15 RBI's, and 23 hits in 19 games at AAA at the time of the callup.

Re: Something Brewing in Milwaukee (2000-????)

    July 2000 Milwaukee Brewers Update

Ron Belliard's batting average has slipped to .286

    Team Stats:
    Overall Record: 42-63
    July Record: 8-16
    Pythagorean Record: 41-64
Current Standings: Sixth place, 37 games back
    Team ERA: 4.83
    Team Batting Average: .243
    Runs Scored: 454
    Runs Allowed: 563

    Team Leaders:
    Wins: A.J. Burnett (6)
    ERA: A.J. Burnett (3.61)
    Strikeouts: Ben Sheets (115)
    Saves: Curtis Leskanic (16)
    Innings Pitched: Ben Sheets (151.1)

    Batting Average: Ronnie Belliard (.286)
    Home Runs: Geoff Jenkins (19)
    RBI's Geoff Jenkins (72)
    Steals: Vernon Wells (8)
    Runs: Geoff Jenkins (57)

Recap: Just when I thought things couldn't get any worse, July came along. This team can really pitch, and it should only get better as the kiddies get experience and mature, with our two aces, Sheets and Burnett, both under the age of 25 and leading the staff already, but the offense is embarrassing. Belliard and Jenkins are both getting to the age where they've already establish what they're going to be, and though they're both solid major league contributors neither are, or will become, superstars. Vernon Wells has shown a lot of promise, including a game that he went 5-7 in and fell just a homer shy of the cycle, but hes gonna need help. The good news, however, is that David Wright has been raking in A ball and may be ready very soon, despite being only 17. Hes hitting .433/.530/.763 with the Brevard County Manatees, as well as blasting seven homers, knocking home 29 runs, and scoring 27 of his own, and in just 97 AB's and 26 games. It is become clear that we made an excellent pick with him and that he is indeed the future of this team, and the future is bright. He's one of the few positional prospects we have though, so we may dip into Free Agency this year and go after a big fish like Alex Rodriguez, since we're 22 million dollars under our budget.

    Pitching:

    Pitching Notes:
    • A.J. Burnett continues to lead the Brewers staff, maintaining a 3.20 ERA with a .244 BAA since the trade that brought him to the City of Festivals.
    • Ben Sheets 5-11 record is very deceiving. He has recorded a quality start in 11 of his 23 starts and if he could get better run support and better performance from the bullpen he could just as easily be 12-5 as he his 5-12.
    • Curtis Leskanic was moved out of the closers role in the middle of the month, but has a .75 ERA in his last 10 appearance and could see himself back in that role very soon.
    • Ben Sheets has walked just 40 batters to his 115 K's in 151.1 innings.
    • John Snyder has continued to be a solid #3 starter, despite less than stellar stats indicating a bit of wildness, including a .281 BAA, 11 hit batters, 12 wild pitches, and 75 walks to 90 K's in 135 innings.

    Batting:

    Batting Notes:
    • One of the few offensive bright spots continues to be Ronnie Belliard and his line of .286/.342/.402.
    • The team's batting average of .243 places them deadlast in Major League Baseball.
    • Vernon Wells is 9-15, in his last 3 games, with four doubles, a triple, three RBI's, and a strikeout, and could be on the verge of a big hot streak.
    • This offense is just plain pitiful.....
Last edited by YEAH DAAAAWG; 07-28-2008 at 04:56 PM. Reason: Changed number of "last games" for Vernon Wells from 10 to 3
