As far as a deal for an A ball player, you have to give something to get something, right? If you draft a guy outright and he pans out, it just costs you the time and $$$ you spent on him.

There's actually one more detail: when you draft a player who's expected to pan out, you pay him a signing bonus. When you trade for him while he's still under a minor league contract, that's already been paid for you. So there probably are cases where it's cheaper to trade for a young player than it would be to draft him.

Bingo.........the argument that some players are 'homegrown' and some aren't is one of the games most rediculous.
