I'd take him as a bench coach in a heartbeat.

I would love to have him on the Mariners but I am happy with Riggleman and hope he gets resigned....

I believe that he's very knowledgeable about the game...on t.v., once, I saw a coach consult with him . whilst Gary was still a player. Come to think of it, a good catcher should make a good coach, versed as he is in all aspects of the game (except running!), hitting; pitching; fielding; psychology...

Naw. Posada made too much money, he'll be a golfer, but not a coach.

Question Re: The latest on Gary Carter

Dunno about that, Robin...look at Wayne Gretzky...with all his millions, he still sought the gosh-awful job of coaching an NHL team...this once sunny guy, now wears a perpetual scowl...

I think that has more to do with Wayne simply not knowing what else to do than hockey...what other pursuits has the guy ever had, really?

He's part owner of the Coyotes as well.

He'd be a fine colour commentator, with his knowledge of the game. He likes golf, too, so why doesn't he go on the circuit and challenge Tiger Woods for #1?
    ...some folks got no ambition

Nah, his love is always going to be hockey, which is fine. Hmmm...kinda curious if he would make a good commentator, actually. I do think that you have to be able to point out the negatives in a player's game to do well in that gig, and I don't know if he can do that.

The only commentator that I'm aware of who is constantly negative about certain players (mostly Europeans, and/or finessers, rather than thugs)
    is Don Cherry.

The rest point out individual mistakes "Smith stood like a pylon, as Jones went round him..." "Brown missed the open net..."Goonie took a cheap shot at his opponent", being quick to point out when those individuals make good plays.

I think that Wayne would stress the positives, viz: "Jones stick-handled past his man..." "Brown is getting chances...he won't always miss" "Goonie's better than that"

Ugh...Don Cherry. I cannot stand that guy. He was played out before he ever stepped in front of a stupid mic for the first time. And yet, apparently the REST of Canada feels differently. I still think it's nothing short of a national shame that that idiot was actually one of the ten finalists for votes in the 'Greatest Canadian in History' competition CBC did a few years back.

Anyway, Gretzky seems to finally be figuring out the coaching thing, so I guess there's a chance we'll never know how he'd do in a booth.

Oh, and I am now bound and determined to nickname a hockey player 'Goonie'.
