August 2007 Review
OH BABY! what a month! We just went on a huuuge winning streak and put ourselves in a fantastic spot for the playoffs. We're now 3 games back from Huston for first place in the NL Central and a half of a game up from the Mets in the wild card race. Now we did have injuries here and there, but our team pulled together and we went on a 10 game winning streak towards the end of the month. Now Jason Bay is a serious contender for NL MVP with 40 homers and 118 RBI's. His homers are National League leading and his RBI's are 2nd in the NL, and with a .280 average and great fielding Jason Bay could win. Another thing is Bay has only 1 error all year and will most likely win the Gold Glove, he also has 3 outfield assist. Jonny Gomes has 31 home runs and is closing in on his 100th career with 96. Kendry Morales now has and average over .300 and a OBP of .396 with 16 homers. He's reallyflourished and is a possible All-Star next year.
Pirates Offense
Now we've had a couple of injuries to our rotation including Brandon Webb, and Oliver Perez. Perez will be out for September, but will be back for the post season if we're in it. Tom Kitchen will replace him. Also Brandon Webb will be out for 2 starts and Shane Youman will start for him. Youman has pitched well as of late dropping his ERA from the high 6's to the mid 4's. Now Tom Kitchen, the young 17 year old stud has been great in his debut. His 99 MPH fastball has been just straight up over powering people. His control and mechanics still need some work, but his great fastball mixed with a knuckle curve over rules it. Paul Maholm has been pitching great into September so we gave him a nice little bonus and gave him a 7-year extension worth 32.9 million dollars and also includes a 2 year player option. Joaquin Benoit has also been lights out with a 2.91 ERA and a 6-1 record.

Just a quick update, it's September 19th and we're tied for first.
September 2007 Review
A TIE! That's how the year ends, a two way tie between us and the big bats of Houston. Well, we did win the wild card so I don't know how this works if we have to play a one game playoff or not, but ether way WE'RE IN THE PLAYOFFS!
Jason Bay finished the year off very strong leading the NL in home runs and coming in third for RBI's. I'm still very unsure if Bay has the MVP in the bag as Matt Holliday has 5 more RBI's and a much better average with 45 homers, but I don't know if the AI takes Coors Field into consideration. Well anyway we finally got to see what Bay could do in a full season without an injury. Also Bay played 155 games when Holliday played all 162. Bay also is a Gold Glove contender but I don't know if that counts toward the MVP vote.
Juan Pierre also finished the year strong and got to a perfectly round .300 average, with a .361 OBP. Juan also led the NL in steals once again to bring his streak to 4 years in a row, Juan had 55. Juan also olny made 2 errors in CF with a fielding percentage of .994 and might win the Gold Glove.
Jimmy Rollins didn't live up to his 67 million dollar contract he got in the offseason but nevertheless he was an important piece of our playoff run. Jimmy only hit .259 but the most important part is he hit 18 homers, which is what we needed, a power boost in the infield, and he stole 27 bases. Now at the beginning of the year I was suspect of putting him at 3B and he did make some errors, 10 to be exact, but it wasn't as disastrous as I thought it would be.
Not much to say about Freddy Sanchez. He finally had a relatively injury free season and showed me what he could do as he hit .323 and played a great 2B. And that's about it.
Jonny Gomes did his job in 2007. He hit 30 homers and had exactly 100 RBI's. Now he didn't have the highest average .242 to be exact but I never expected him to be Ted Williams. Now the one real big issue with Gomes is the errors, 15! 15 errors is pretty crazy. But here comes the good. 17 Outfield assist, yeah the guy has a cannon and that's what makes up for the errors.
Kendry Morales had a great second year! He hit exactly .300 with 18 homers and 93 RBI's. Much better that I expected. He also only had 4 errors.

The Pirates Offense for 2007!
Our rotation had a HUGE boost over the 2006 season. Brandon Webb finally came out of his shell a bit as our ace. He's not quite the ace we expected him to be but he is a solid #1 guy. Webb went 14-6 in 30 starts with a 3.72 ERA wit 171 K's. Now it's time to test him in the playoffs.
Joaquin Benoit had a triumphant return in the second half of the year after returning from his injury. Benoit only had 16 starts all year but he had 14 decisions with a 11-3 record. I couldn't believe it when I saw win after win week after week, but with his 3.66 ERA it was inevitable.
Paul Maholm also had a career year with a 12-10 record and a 3.13 ERA with and 183 K's. He really came out of nowhere.

Can anyone tell my the difference between PBP and simming? Because I wanna watch the playoffs but I don't want PBP to screw it up in any way.
PIRATES TAKE GAME 1 OF NLDS!
October 6, 2007- Oh man this was an even battle the whole way through. It started with Paul Maholm giving up 3 quick runs through 3 innings and he really struggled in the beginning as he was just walking way too many batters, but he managed to get out of many jams. Now here's where it gets good. Top of the fourth Kendry Morales steps up with a moan on first and second and then BAM! he smacks a game tying 3-run homer, this kid just keeps getting hotter and hotter. Right after Morales, Jack Wilson steps up and goes back-to-back to give us the 4-3 lead. Maholm settled down and ended up pitching 6 strong. Paulino gave us some insurance with a solo shot, and Eddy Rodriguez pitch 2 strong to lead to Mariano. Now here's where it became a real nail-biter. Mariano got an out, and then walked the bases loaded, I almost crapped my pants. Brian Giles comes up and hits a loooooong flie ball, but Its caught and and a run tags up. The next batter got up and hit a sharp ground ball up the middle and I thought the save was blown, when Freddy Sanchez swiftly fielded it and won the game. Pirates lead NLDS 1-0.

I'm not the only one who knows the truth about Matt Ryan.
Yeah, I watched it in GM mode and it was realistic. Sometimes the AI does dumb things but I didn't see it here, so I'm gonna watch the rest of the games.
BRAVES TIE SERIES AT 1-1
October 7, 2007- Oh man, what a horrible pitching performance by Brandon Webb. And this is what I meant when I said we needed him to be our ace. We NEED him to win big games like this, bu it looks like Maholm is our real ace and I'll stick to the plan of him pitching game 5. 6 walks! Yup, 6. Webb walked the bases loaded in the second and then walk a run in and then threw a wild pitch to let another run score. Our defense didn't help at all as Jonny Gomes dropped an easy catch with 2 men in scoring position, and then on the following play he did the SAME thing allowing another run. And well you can see the rest of the game for yourself, the Braves ran away with the game, we couldn't stop Drew our LaRoche, and there pitchers didn't have to do much to win except throw strikes unlike Webb.
PIRATES TAKE GAME 3 ON GOMES WALK-OFF SINGLE!
October 9, 2007- Wow, this game almost gave me a heart attack. It started off with more first inning trouble as Joaquin Benoit gave up an ol' ER. But again we kept fightin' and Gomes came up with big hits in a triple and a homer and we took the lead. The problem with us this series is we can't score the man from third with less than 2 outs, I don't get it we just can't play small ball. Well we had the lead 7-3 and Eddy Rodriguez came in and shut them down. He did give up an ER setting up Mariano for the save in the ninth. Now here's were it gets close. Mariano gave up a lead-off hit to Wilson Betemit, which is never a good sign. It followed with Kelly Johnson pinch hitting for the pitcher and then lining out. Now Furcal gets up and hits a soft grounder, and I was on the edge of my seat 'cause I knew he could beat it out, but Jack Wilson quickly got the fielders choice at second. Now I'm extremely relieved. Brian McCann steps up and I think it's over, but no. SMACK! A game tying homer to center. I'm crushed, Mariano blows the save. Now the incredible J.D. Drew steps up, but Mariano K's him with the hardest cutter I've ever seen in my life. Now we're the home team so I know we have a great chance to win. So Freddy Sanchez leads off with a soft liner but keeps on runnin' towards second and makes it! Now we have a really great chance to win. MVP candidate Jason Bay steps up and hits a sharp grounder to the hole, but somehow Furcal speeds to it and scoops it up. It's all up to Gomes, he gets up and when he did he had that look in his eye. Gomes was upset when he came to Pittsburgh because he didn't think they were a playoff team, but now was his chance. He hits a liner over the third baseman's head and Freddy comes flying in. The crowd goes wild and the Pittsburgh Pirates all start puonding on Jonny's head and high five went all around, and now the Pirates have a chance to wrap this up.
So wait, what happens if you win the World Series before you move to Portland? Is there precedent for this?
My real question is: are you going to blow the series? Because I want to know if I should lay money on the Braves...![]()
