    Randolph fired

So, the Mets fired manager Willie Randolph, along with first base coach Tom Nieto and pitching coach Rick Peterson.

Bizarre timing, coming the night of a win....

Jerry Manuel will replace him as in the interim manager.

And I really don't see much of anything changing. They're an okay team...nothing more, nothing less.

Yep. Randolph wasn't a particularly great manager, but he also wasn't the reason they haven't been playing well. Injuries and ineffectiveness have hurt them badly, but that's what happens when you rely on aging players. This is really just a "symbolic" move.

It's one of those "We have to do something" moves that almost never do anything.

    Re: Randolph fired

I think Randolph's problem was being too effective over a stretch last year. The expectations were raised to unreasonable levels if you at the talent they actually have compared to the other NL teams.

    Timing was strange.

Certainly not his fault that Pedro ,Moises Alou ,El Duque have been on DL more than off,
nor is it his fault they signed an aging Shawn Green and Moises alou to replace "the aging and injury prone" Cliff Floyd.
Heath Bell, Chad Bradford, Royce Ring ?
speaking of which it would be nice if Omar went after some players that he doesnt already have a decade long relationship with.
Instead of "omar - the guy who who finds all kinds of great young talent"
its Omar - the guy who signs the same players over and over again and depletes the farm in the process

    Anyways

Ive felt that the fight / fire has been gone from this team since about this point last year. I found it interesting that last night Gary Cohen pointed out how after back to back losses , Mike Sciosia SCREAMED at his team for sloppy play . I also see plenty of of other managers go out scream and the ump and get tossed if only to defend their player ...

willie " um excuse me kind sir but i think he was safe "
    ump " he was out"
willie " well okey dokey then"

and yet i think it likely manage a team to the WS.
    sad.

    next victim please.

    Re: Randolph fired

Well really he was doing an awful job. His team had a huge collapse at the end of this year and are playing way below the expectations of their talent.

he was supposed to be fired saturday night/sunday (but the Mets thought it would be classier not fire him on fathers day and instead say he's the day-to-day manager??), and should have been fired weeks ago here :

    Re: Randolph fired

his problem is he cant motivate.

and they are NOT underrated. they have NOTHING. David wright and Reyes. beltran is very good and then what. not 1Bman no 2B no LFer no real RF'r no catcher and Wagner. Joe Smith too, he is good. they have NO pitching. Santana then nothing. People laugh at my atlanta's pitching staff with smoltz, glavine, and hampton. at least we have guys we can bring up that are good as replacements. the mets have NOTHING.

Poor Willie....those former Yankee players never get any respect. He'd be welcome back in Yankee Nation!

    Re: Randolph fired

Willie Randolph is an excellent manager, and shouldn't have been fired. There is only so much you do with a team, and quite frankly, the Muts are a pathetic team when you break it down. This was a very classless move for the Muts; the Muts have won 3 of 4, and looked to be hitting their stride. But, hey... The Muts have been a less than classy organization for a looooooong time.

Also, I don't mean to scream racism, but what's up with having all latino players, and coaches pretty much - and they only fired the non-latino coaches it seems. I for one, am not racist, and I believe that the best players should play, and that is what should matter, not the color of your skin. Let's just say that it's not ridiculous to think that Omar Minaya doesn't think the same.

Come be our bench coach, Willie! We'll take Rick Peterson, also.
