    Joe,

What do you think about New York Yankees pitcher, Chein-Ming-Wang being hurt? Will they find a replacement you think?

    Joe,

If you were the GM of the Red Sox, would you trade John Lackey straight up for Jason Bay?

    Clay,

The Red Sox have a surplus of good pitching right now, and with good pitching, you can limit the number of runs that your opponent scores, and when you score more runs than your opponent, you win the game.

What the Red Sox need is more good hitting, because if the pitchers can prevent the other team from scoring runs but your offense can't score any themselves, well, that's going to be a really long game.

Looking at the numbers you gotta go with a guy like Jason Bay over Lackey. Lackey is only 1 for 30 in his career as a hitter, but he only has 9 strikeouts, so he makes good contact at least.

As for Jason Bay, using advanced sabermatronics, we see that he has a lifetime .280 batting average with 185 home runs and 610 RBI. These are the main offensive numbers. You really have to go with what you see on the field, and although I've never seen him play in person, I believe he used to play for the Red Sox, so this could be an advantage.

Bottom line, the Red Sox need more hitting, so I say pull the trigger on the trade for Jason Bay.

Ewing6, a lot of people assume Barry Bonds did steroids, which I'm not sure if he did, but if he did, let's assume that it added 200 home runs to his total. I'm just choosing a random number here. So he will need five more seasons of 40 home runs to make up those home runs again, but looking out on the free agent market, if a guy like Jermaine Dye can't get a job, then I don't see a team giving Barry Bonds a chance. He hasn't played in a few years, so he would probably need an extra couple of weeks or so to get ready. Maybe the Red Sox, who I mentioned above, if David Ortiz doesn't start hitting soon.

As for Nick Punto, I've never seen him play myself, but I've heard that he has intangibles and is a great teammate and great in the community. These things don't always translate onto the baseball field, but it might make a team like the Twins give him another contract after he's a free agent. Then he'll get a little closer to those magic numbers.

Mr. Joe Morgan, who have you recently seen play in real life for the MLB (past year)? Also, if you've seen Brian Fuentes play, can you tell me how much he sucks?

Hi John, I've seen quite a few teams over the past year, but they all blend together. What I do know is that fundamentally, the best teams I saw generally scored more runs than their opponents, and in the end, those are the teams that are going to make it in the playoffs. As for Brian Fuentes, I haven't seen him pitch, but supposedly he's actually right-handed and lost a bet at the beginning of his career and was forced to pitch left-handed. You don't want to know what would have happened if he won the bet.

Hello ewing6, I'm not too familiar with Hugh's work on the forums, but from what I've been told, there are rumors that he practices the occult, because generally that's what the purists of the game of baseball (like myself) consider those people who mess around with sabermatronics like OPS, UZR, and other made-up statistics. It's difficult to keep up with this nonsense, because every year they come up with 3 or 4 new formulas to try to leave the best of us out of the game. Don't get caught up into this trap, ewing6. Your eyes will tell you everything you need to know! Unless you start losing your sight or go blind. I don't know what to tell you in that case. I suppose you could ask somebody else what's going on.
