Thank you AOW for that suggestion to eat at Jim and Nick's BBQ! It was fantastic! Catching up with a shipmate from a decade ago, over a delightful meal was good times for us both. Unfortunately, the line of T-storms and hail storms that crossed over Fort Mill before the game made the field unplayable. So the game was postponed until Sunday (doubleheader), and I was unable to attend due to prior engagements....
We did make it to the ballpark, where we got a free T-shirt and free magnetic schedules and since the game was canceled for the night I can use my tickets that I purchased (in advance) on any other home game except for July 4th.

On 4/7 I watched the triple-A Charlotte Knights play against the Norfolk Tides. The Tides win - it was actually a doubleheader that they split, as a makeup for a rainout the previous night. The Tides 3B is a real swing and miss guy. I think he hit one deep, but everything else he whiffed at. Like a mini Pedro Alvarez.
On 5/12 I caught the pink bats, mothers day game. They played against the Mets triple-A affiliate. More exciting game, with lead changes and go-ahead homers. The white sox have some talent in triple-A.
Tonight I am in Greenville, SC. We have some sweet seats to tonights single-A Greenville Drive game. I am excited to see some Red Sox talent play for the first time this year. I'll be going to 3 sox games in Tampa, 3 Phillies/Marlins games in Miami, and at least 1, possibly 2, games at Fenway versus the Nationals. Then I have four more triple-A games in Charlotte when the PawSox visit.
All in all, thats 14 definite ballgames this season across 3 talent levels. Probably 15 - I have the money to burn, and people and selling Sox home games on ebay and stubhub with the team way back in last place. Yay.
Can't wait for Cerberus (Danny Hultzen, James Paxton and Taijuan Walker) to be called up to AAA so I can finally see them.
Also short-season A ball is about to start up in a month. Should be fun to see many of the new draft picks playing there.
This was a great game, by the way.
The Drive's starter, Younginer, was never in control thru 5.2 IP. He left with a 3-0 deficit in something of a snoozer. The guy after him didn't help, Wilson - he got out of the 5th but then loaded the bases and couldn't get out of the sixth. They went to Tyler Lockwood, a 95mpg fireballer with a sidearm-ish delivery, and he started mowing down batters like nobody's business.
Meanwhile the offense woke up. A huge homerun by 1B Boss Moanaroa (totally naming my kid Boss) sealed the win, as the drive went up 7-3. Cecchini (pronounced like Zucchini, which is not how i was saying it in my head) was in the middle of it. Moanaroa looks okay, and Renfroe has something as well...their SS was very athletic, diving sideways and making stabs...the kids incredibly skinny, like a Julio Lugo.
I was incensed at one point - the Drive were trying to come back, and they had 1st and 2nd with no outs. The friggin manager tries the bunt, but after 2 failed attempts I was so happy that they gave up. I was rattling on about runs expected and how it decreases post-bunt in that situation. The kid worked a walk instead, so it was bases juiced with no outs.
West Virginia Power is a Pirates team, and they had some serious talent. Their SP was good, and their lineup was tough too. The Drive really looked outclassed until mid game, when Lockwood and Cecchini turned it around.
One thing that bothered me was the Drive's materials - their handout not only had no roster information, but the pitcher on the cover story, Matt Barnes, isnt even with the Drive anymore - he was promoted to high-A league like 2 weeks ago. WTF. Get on your reading materials, Drive.
I loved it when I lived in Norfolk, Va. My office looked down on the Tidewater Tides, Mets farm at the time. Best thing was we could cut through our garage, into their restricted area, through the kitchen area and straight into the stadium. I would feel bad, but my company was a sponsor so why not. $4 24ounce beers and my only foul ball ever from Ricky Henderson.
One good side effect of business travel - seeing new ballparks.
Last night I attended Victory Park in Indianapolis. Saw the AAA Indianapolis Indians (Pirates) versus the Syracuse Sky Chiefs (Nationals). Lots of familiar names - Clement, Hoffpauer, Teahen, Marte, Anderson Hernandez, etc. A great web-gem worthy play by the Indians SS (who can't hit a lick unfortunately). A matchup of two lefties, home team won, $1 hot dogs/popcorn/peanuts/cracker jack, and seats in the second level right above home plate, front row, for $15.
Not a bad evening in this little city!
