Re: The end of one era in Minnesota, and the beginning of another

    League Update

    Notable Injuries:

2B Brian Roberts (BAL) - Broken back vertabrae, out 213 days
SP Phil Humber (MIN) - Broken forearm, out 64 days
1B Scott Hatteberg (CIN) - Broken tibia, out 102 days

    Notable trades:

    Florida trades:

    2B Mark Ellis - 80 CON, 75 POW, 76 SPD, 75 EYE, 87 ARM, 88 RNG, 91 FLDG
    RP Ross Wolf - 20 END, 72 CON, 69 POW, 67 MOV, 74 FB, 67 CUR

    to Giants for:

    RP Tyler Walker - 22 END, 74 CON, 81 POW, 79 MOV, 75 FB, 83 CHG, 68 HC
    CF Aaron Rowand - 80 CON, 77 POW, 78 EYE, 69 EYE, 77 ARM, 86 RNG, 83 FLD

Bad trade for the Marlins, in my opinion. They're not really in contention and Rowands contract could kill them down the road.

Re: The end of one era in Minnesota, and the beginning of another

I'm desperately in need of an upgrade offensively, and it wouldn't hurt to dump some salary either. So I decided to phone around on Saturday after our game against the Blue Jays to see what I could get. I decided to shop Michael Cuddyer with two pitching prospects, Kevin Slowey and Kevin Mulvey, to see what type of offers I could get. I got plenty of tantalizing offers, Colorado offered Matt Holliday but his contract is too much for a team that needs to keep a stable budget like us, Boston offered Manny Ramirez, Detroit offered Gary Sheffield, but they were all too expensive, or just simply didn't make sense. Then when I was about ready to give up for the time being, I got a call from Frank Wren, the Atlanta GM.

    ***********************************************************************

    Frank Wren: Hello, John?

Me: Yes Frank, how are you doing?

FW: Good, good. I have an offer for the package I hear you've been shopping that I think may fit everything you're looking for.

Me: Shoot, I haven't heard anything that has yet tonight though.

FW: Alright. How does Jeff Francoeur for Michael Cuddyer, Kevin Mulvey, and Kevin Slowey sound?

Me: Hmm. Jeff is a talented player, one I've always coveted, and he doesn't hit arby for another year. I cut about 7 million off my payroll, gain a player that could be better down the road, for 2 good, albeit uncertain pitching prospects, and an OF who couldn't hit water if he fell out of a boat lately. You've got a deal!

FW: Excellent! I'll send some guys over so we can finalize it and announce it and get everyone in their new uniforms tomorrow.

    Me: Sounds good.

Re: The end of one era in Minnesota, and the beginning of another

    May 1, 2008
Toronto Blue Jays (14-14) @ Minnesota Twins (16-11)
Twins 1 over Blue Jays 0
    WP: Scott Baker - 8IP 5H 0ER 5K (5-1)
    LP: Roy Halladay - CG 5H 2BB ER 7K (1-3)
    SV: Joe Nathan (8)

What a game! Fantastic pitching on both sides and just plainly an exciting game to watch! The lone run of the game off a Mike Lamb double to score recently acquired Jeff Francoeur, who went 1-3 with a run and 2 strikeouts in his Twins debut.

    May 2, 2008
Toronto Blue Jays (14-15) @ Minnesota Twins (17-11)
Twins 5 over Blue Jays 0
    WP: Livan Hernandez - CG SHO 9H 3BB 4K (1-2)
    LP: Jesse Litsch - 5 1/3IP 6H 2BB 4ER 6K

Jeff Francoeur hit his first homerun as a Twin, his 8th of the season overall. Kubel also hit a homerun and is tied for the team lead in homers with Jeff Francoeur at 8 a piece.

    May 3, 2008
Minnesota Twins (18-11) @ Chicago White Sox (13-16)
White Sox 8 over Twins 7
    WP: Matt Thornton - 2IP 2H BB 2ER (1-1)
    LP: Matt Guerrier - 1/3IP 3H BB 3ER K (0-1)

Twinkies lost but it was still a fun game nonetheless. Francoeur has been lighting up the AL since coming to the Twins, notching 2 more hits, both homeruns, in this game, and collecting 2 more RBI's. Joe Mauer went 3-4 with an RBI and 3 runs, Delmon Young went 1-3 with 2 RBI's, and Morneau also collected a hit.

    May 4, 2008
Minnesota Twins (18-12) @ Chicago White Sox (14-16)
White Sox 9 over Twins 6
    WP: Boone Logan - 2 1/3IP 2H (2-1)
    LP: Matt Guerrier - 0IP 3H 3ER (0-2)

Liriano pitched solid, but not great. Liriano went 5 2/3 innings, allowed 4 runs, and struckout 7. We lost the game on a 3 homer in the bottom of the 9th. Francouer continued his hot hitting, going 3-3 with a walk, a run, and an RBI. Mauer, Young, and Morneau all went 2-5 with a run, and Young and Morneau both hit a homer, with Morneau notching 2 RBI's and Young collecting 1.

    May 5, 2008
Minnesota Twins (18-13) @ Chicago White Sox (15-16)
Twins 3 over White Sox 2
    WP: Boof Bonser - 8IP 8H 3BB 2ER 6K (4-2)
    LP: Scott Linebrink - IP 2H ER K (0-2)
    SV: Joe Nathan (9)

Francoeur just can't make an out. We went 1-3 with a walk, a run, an RBI, and on one of those "outs" he actually reached on an error. Kubel and Casilla each went 2-4 with an RBI.

    May 6, 2008
Minnesota Twins (19-13) @ Tampa Bay Rays (16-16)
    Twins 5 over Rays 4
    WP: Scott Baker - 7IP 5H BB 3ER 5K (6-1)
    LP: Scott Kazmir - 2 2/3IP 6H 2BB 4ER 3K (1-1)
    SV: Joe Nathan (10)

Francouer can do no wrong! He went 2-5 with 2 runs in this one. Lamb went 3-4 with 2 RBI's and Kubel went 2-5 with 2 RBI's. Baker is looking like he could be an early Cy Young contender, although so are Boof Bonser and Francisco Liriano.

    May 7, 2008
Minnesota Twins (20-13) @ Tampa Bay Rays (16-17)
    Twins 11 over Rays 6
    WP: Livan Hernandez - 7 1/3IP 10H BB 4ER 3K (2-2)
    LP: Matt Garza - 1 2/3IP 8H 4ER K (4-4)

We lit up the scoreboard tonight. Francouer went 2-5 with 2 RBI's, Gomez went 3-5 with 2 RBI's, Mauer went 2-5. Everyone in the starting lineup besides Delmon Young recorded a hit.

    May 8, 2008
Minnesota Twins (21-13) @ Tampa Bay Rays (16-18)
    Rays 12 over Twins 4
    WP: Trever Miller - IP H ER K (0-1)
    LP: Nick Blackburn - 6 1/3IP 12H BB 8ER 2K

Terrible, terrible game for Minny. Blackburn got absolutely destroyed in his first start of '08 and the offense wasn't there either. Francouer got two more hits, including a homer, and Gomez went 2-4 as well.

This week kind of makes me wonder if I can keep the success up, especially with Jeff Francouer around now, although I'm still skeptical.

The starting pitching is still going strong, outside of the #5 slot. Livan is even starting to pitch better lately. The top 3 of Liriano, Bonser, and Baker are still dealing too. Liriano sports a 2.78 ERA, Bonser sits at 2.75, and Baker is at 2.70. Its impossible for them to keep up this level of success, outside of Liriano perhaps, but its certainly exciting and fun to watch while its lasting. Liriano and Baker are particularly exciting me. Baker has walked fewer batters than runs hes allowed this season, 14 to 15, and Liriano is making fans in Minnesota forget who Johan Santana even is.

The offense seems to be revitalized with Francouer. Jeff is absolutely raking as a Twin. He has a batting average of .467, an OBP of .515, a slugging percent of .967, and an OPS of 1.482, with 4 homers and 10 RBI's, as a Twin. Comparatively, he had hit 7 homers as a Brave in a month of play, compared to the 4 in a week of play as a Twin. Morneau's average is up to .311 and hes now got 2 homers and 15 RBI's.

Next we finish up this set against the Rays, then we come home to play the Yankees, and then we have an offday before we travel to Texas to play the Rangers.

Re: The end of one era in Minnesota, and the beginning of another

    May 9, 2008
Minnesota Twins (21-14) @ Tampa Bay Rays (17-18)
    Twins 5 over Rays 3
    WP: Francisco Liriano - 7 2/3IP 8H 2BB 2ER 9K (4-2)
    LP: Jason Hammel - 4IP 5H 4ER 4K (2-1)
    SV: Joe Nathan (11)

A great start by Liriano, he really seems to be putting it all together this season and may make people forget who Johan Santana is. Francouer ended his hitting streak at 19 games, going back to his time with Atlanta. Mike Lamb went 2-2 with a homer, 3 RBI's, and a run, and Delmon Young and Alexi Casilla also collected an RBI each.

    May 10, 2008
New York Yankees (17-17) @ Minnesota Twins (22-14)
    Yankees 12 over Twins 0
    WP: Phil Hughes - 8 1/3IP 3H 4BB 0ER 6K (5-1)
    LP:Boof Bonser - 4IP 8H 3BB 6ER 4K (4-3)

This was just an ugly, ugly game for Minny. Bonser got roughed up, as did Denny Reyes, Juan Rincon, and Jesse Crain. We managed only 3 hits as a team, one each for Mike Redmond, Jeff Francouer, and Delmon Young. Justin Morneau and Joe Mauer each suffered minor injuries and sat this one, and the next few out.

    May 11, 2008
New York Yankees (18-17) @ Minnesota Twins (22-15)
    Yankees 5 over Twins 3
    WP: Mike Mussina - 7IP 8H BB 2ER 3K (4-3)
    LP: Scott Baker - 6 2/3IP 8H 2BB 3ER 4K (6-2)
    SV: Mariano Rivera (9)

Kind of a heartbreaker for the Twins. Baker pitched a helluva game but the offense wasn't there. The top 3 spots in the batting order went hitless, but 4-9 each collected at least one hit. Casilla, Francouer, and Lamb collected the 3 RBI's.

    May 12, 2008
New York Yankees (19-17) @ Minnesota Twins (22-16)
    Twins 4 over Yankees 2
    WP: Livan Hernandez - 7 1/3IP 7H 3BB 2ER 4K (3-2)
    LP: Chien-Ming Wang - 6IP 7H BB 3ER 2K (3-4)
    SV: Joe Nathan (12)

This victory is bittersweet for us because Justin Morneau suffered a pulled groin in this game and will miss two weeks. Jason Pridie started in place of Carlos Gomez, and went 1-1 with a walk, a run, and 2 RBI's. Delmon Young also went 0-3 but added 2 RBI's to his season total.

    May 13, 2008

No game for us today, but gave us sometime to think about what to do with our lineup with Morneau going down for a couple weeks. This is what we came up with, vs. Righties then vs. Lefties:

    1. CF Carlos Gomez
    2. 2B Alexi Casilla
    3. LF Delmon Young
    4. C Joe Mauer
    5. RF Jeff Francouer
    6. DH Jason Kubel
    7. 1B Mike Lamb
    8. SS Adam Everett
    9. 3B Nick Punto

    1. CF Carlos Gomez
    2. 2B Alexi Casilla
    3. LF Delmon Young
    4. RF Jeff Francouer
    5. C Joe Mauer
    6. 1B Mike Lamb
    7. DH Jason Kubel
    8. 3B Nick Punto
    9. SS Adam Everett

It should also be noted that we called up Matt Tolbert to take Morneau's roster spot while hes on the DL.

    May 14, 2008
    Minnesota Twins (23-16) @ Texas Rangers (18-20)
    Twins 5 over Rangers 4
    WP: Jesse Crain - 2IP 3H (3-0)
    LP: Joaquin Benoit - 2/3IP 2H BB ER K (2-2)
    SV: Joe Nathan (13)

Liriano was going really strong in this one till he came up for the 7th and got roughed up a bit and got pulled before getting an out in the inning. Jason Kubel had a good game, going 3-3. Francouer went 2-4 with an RBI.

    May 14, 2008
    Minnesota Twins (24-16) @ Texas Rangers (18-21)
    Rangers 5 over Twins 4
    WP: Kason Gabbard - 5 2/3IP 9H BB 4ER 4K (1-5)
    LP: Boof Bonser - 6IP 5H 5BB 4ER 6K (4-4)
    SV: C.J. Wilson (10)

Boof seems to be coming back down to earth, which I've been expecting. Gomez went 2-5 with a steal, but if he doesn't start striking out less and getting on base more often he'll likely be moved down from the leadoff spot, or even to the minors to get more seasoning. Matt Tolbert, Francouer, and Mauer each got 2 hits. The big damage came from the bottom of the order however, Mike Lamb and Adam Everett got 2 RBI's a piece, and Everett got his first homer of the season.

I'm really expecting the team to come back down to earth now, especially with the injury to Morneau, and the fact that Boof has already begun to do just that.

Francouer does appear to be somewhat human after all. Now hes "only" hitting .377/.421/.660/1.081 as a Twin. Gomez, on the other hand, is struggling mightily. Hes hitting only .196 with a .229 OBP out of the leadoff hole. If he doesn't pick it up soon then he'll either be moved down in the batting order, or sent to the minors. Delmon has also struggled lately, to the tune of a .128 batting average in his last 10 games. On a more positive note, Mike Lamb is doing a grade A job of filling in for Morneau, hitting .382 in his last 10 ball games.

The pitching is struggling somewhat lately too. Bonser added roughly a full earned run to his ERA in the past week or two. In addition, the bullpen, outside of Joe Nathan's 13 saves and 0.56 ERA, has been average at best. To the point where normally dominant set up man Pat Neshek has an ERA over 6. There isn't any help on the way either, as Phil Humber is still out for almost 2 more months.

Next week we finish up this set against the Rangers and then we play a big series on the road against the Division leading Indians. We then travel to Los Angeles to play the Angels.

Re: The end of one era in Minnesota, and the beginning of another

With the draft coming up I thought it might be a good idea to have a discussion with my scouting director, Deron Johnson, to see what he thinks of some of the kids I've been keeping my eyes on and who he thinks might be worth picking.

    ***************************************************************************

    (Over the phone)

JM (Me): Hey Deron, can you come up here, I want to talk to you.

DJ: Sure, I'll be right up.

    (DJ gets to my office)

    DJ: Whats up boss?

JM: Nothing too much, just wanted to talk to you about something.

DJ: Sure, whats on your mind?

JM: As you know the draft is only 2 weeks away and this is a very important draft for us, and those two weeks will go by very fast. I've been looking over your scouting reports of some of the kids at the top of the draft and I wanted to ask you what you think about them.

DJ: Sure, who do you want to know about?

JM: Well we need a good third base prospect in the system, so what do you think of 3B Pedro Alvarez?

DJ: I think he'll be great, he could even be ready by the end of the season. He projects to have a very strong bat, he could be a .300, 30-40 home run hitter in the future. ****, I'd call him a young Miguel Cabrera with the bat. However, his glove could be of concern, I don't think he'll be any better than average with the glove. There is a very strong possibility hes there when we pick at #12. Or is it #14, I forget?

JM: Hmm, ok. Next up would be SS Tim Beckham?

DJ: Hes certainly an elite bat, but hes not much of a defender, and as you know its important to have a strong defender at SS. I personally think he'll be a bust.

JM: Alright, what about the other Beckham, Gordon?

DJ: I'd say hes in the same boar as Tim. Good bat, poor glove.

JM: Ok. What about Kyle Lobstein, SP?

DJ: Hes one of the top 3 SP's in the draft, in my opinion. Hes very advanced in all aspects of pitching, especially for his age. He combines excellent control with excellent power, along with top notch movement. He also possesses 4 pitches, all of which should become at least average pitches, with his fastball and curve potentially being his best pitches. If he develops properly he'll be a top of the rotation pitches.

JM: Ok, next up is Tim Melville, what about him?

DJ: Hes one of those top 3 as well. His control isn't great, but that will come with time. He has great movement and the ability to strike guys out with the best of them. His curve is already major league quality, and his fastball also projects to be above average, and a knucklecurve that could be average as well. He could be very, very good as well.

JM: Alright, Ross Tyson is next up.

DJ: The third of the top 3. Basically the same as Lobstein except his pitches grade out better and he could be ready sooner.

JM: Ok, I want to come up with a top 10 of who we should get, so we need to go over 4 more. Next I want to know about LF Dennis Raben.

DJ: Ok. I think he could become a very special player. He already possess an eye better than a lot of major leaguers. Plus he projects to have above average contact and power skills, and could be a Gold Glove left fielder.

JM: Alright, 3 to go. I know we've got Casilla around, but hes an average player at best, and the book is still out on him to be quite honest, so tell me about 2B Roger Crawford.

DJ: He could become an elite offensive second basemen, potentially a .300, 30 homer hitter. He also has good range and a strong arm at second base, however I doubt his actual fielding ability.

JM: Only 2 left. Next tell me about 2B Jemile Weeks.

DJ: Basically just a more advanced, closer to ML ready, version of Roger Crawford, with Crawford possessing a little more potential.

JM: Ok, last guy then we've got to figure out who we like over who. We've got Morneau, but Yonder Alonso is a real impact bat in this draft, tell me more about him.

DJ: Hes got prolific power, and decent contact ability. But he doesn't have much of an eye. He is one of the better defenders at 1B in the draft though.

JM: Ok. This is the order I've got them in:

    1. SP Tim Melville
    2. SP Kyle Lobstein
    3. 3B Pedro Alvarez
    4. LF Dennis Raben
    5. SP Tyson Ross
    6. 1B Yonder Alonso
    7. SS Tim Beckham
    8. 2B Roger Crawford
    9. 2B Jemile Weeks
    10. SS Gordon Beckham

DJ: Looks like a good list to me. The top 3-5 are really interchangeable and you can't go wrong with any of them. I like the order you have them in though.

JM: Ok, then thats what we'll go with.

    ***************************************************************************

Draft is in two weeks and we're going with the above list in terms of who we'll draft.

    1. SP Tim Melville
    2. SP Kyle Lobstein
    3. 3B Pedro Alvarez
    4. LF Dennis Raben

Also guys, I encourage you to ask questions and comment on my dynasty. Sometimes I feel like no one is reading or anything if people don't comment as I go through and I lose motivation.

Re: The end of one era in Minnesota, and the beginning of another

    May 16, 2008
    Minnesota Twins (24-17) @ Texas Rangers (19-21)
    Rangers 11 over Twins 2
    WP: Claudio Vargas - 7IP 6H 2BB 2ER 5K (2-1)
    LP: Scott Baker - 6 1/3IP 11H 2BB 6ER 3K (6-3)

Another ugly loss for the Twinkies. On a positive note Carlos Gomez must've known I've been thinking of moving him down because he went 3-4 with a steal and an RBI. The other RBI is credited to Joe Mauer.

    May 17, 2008
    Minnesota Twins (24-18) @ Cleveland Indians (28-15)
    Twins 5 over Indians 4
WP: Pat Neshek - IP (2-1)
    LP: Joe Borowski - IP 3H 2ER K (2-1)
    SV: Joe Nathan (14)

What a game to start out a critical series for us! We trailed by a run going into the top of the ninth, but Francouer lead off the inning with a homer to tie the score. Nick Punto then knocked in Adam Everett from second to take the lead and Joe Nathan shut the door in the bottom of the inning to seal the win. Everyone besides Gomez and Casilla got one hit, both of whom went hitless.

    May 18, 2008
    Minnesota Twins (25-18) @ Cleveland Indians (28-16)
    Twins 3 over Indians 1
    WP: Francisco Liriano - 6 2/3IP 3H 3BB 0ER 7K (5-2)
    LP: Cliff Lee - 4IP 6H 2BB 3ER 7K (2-3)
    SV: Joe Nathan (15)

Quite the pitchers duel in this one, but Liriano triumphed. Gomez went 3-4 in this one as well, also stealing three bases. Delmon Young went 3-4 and knocked a runner home, and Joe Mauer got only one hit, but also drove in a run.

    May 19, 2008
    Minnesota Twins (26-18) @ Cleveland Indians (28-17)
    Indians 11 over Twins 8
    WP: Fausto Carmona - 5IP 9H 4ER 5K (6-2)
    LP: Boof Bonser - 5IP 10H 7ER 4K (4-5)

Boof's ERA climbed to 4.41 after this one, as we failed to complete what could have been a critical sweep. Gomez had a great game however, falling a homer short of the cycle. Delmon Young also had himself a ballgame, going 4-5 with a homer, a run, and 5 runs batted in.

    May 20, 2008
Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim (23-22) @ Minnesota Twins (26-19)
    Twins 5 over Angels 4
    WP: Scott Baker - 6IP 8H 2BB 4ER 5K (7-3)
    LP: Scot Shields - IP 2H ER K (1-3)
    SV: Joe Nathan (16)

Baker started this one out shaky, allowing all of his earned runs in the first two innings, but settled down to pitch a decent ballgame. Gomez went 3-4 with an RBI and two steals, Mauer went 1-2 with two walks and two RBI's.

    May 21, 2008
Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim (23-23) @ Minnesota Twins (27-19)
    Twins 12 over Angels 0
WP: Livan Hernandez - CG SHO 4H BB 5K (4-2)
    LP: Jon Lackey - 2IP 6H 5ER K (0-2)

Livan got his second shutout of the season, but despite the two shutouts his ERA sits at an average 4.28. Gomez continues his red hot hitting with a 2-5, 2 RBI night. Casilla and Adam Everett also got two hits and an RBI each, while Jeff Francouer went 3-4 with a walk and two runs. Everyone in the starting lineup collected a hit.

    May 22, 2008
Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim (23-24) @ Minnesota Twins (28-19)
    Twins 8 over Angels 4
    WP: Francisco Liriano - 6IP 5H 2BB 3ER 7K (6-2)
    LP: Jered Weaver - 3IP 6H BB 4ER 5K (3-5)

Liriano pitches another gem. Adam Everett went 2-2 with two walks and an RBI, and Francoeur also collected two hits. Young went 1-4 a two run homer.

The team is really up and down right now, but handling the division leaders so well makes me think that we really may be in this for the long haul. After this week of play I'm 1/2 game out of the AL Central lead and still lead the Wild Card by two games over Detroit.

Gomez' season line isn't that impressive (.233/.267/.338/.605), however he is killing the ball in his last 10 games, with a line of .370/.396/.478/.874, with 7 steals, and two triples. Jeff Francouer has cooled down quite a bit since his hot start when he first got to Minnesota, but he still has a season line of .314 with 12 homers and 37 runs batted in. Delmon Young isn't hitting quite as well as he was to start the season, but he does have 14 RBI's in his last 10 games, and leads the team in RBI's, with 43.

Boof has officially come back down to earth, as his ERA has climbed by about 2 runs in the past 2 weeks. Baker has also begun his descent to normalcy, but still holds an above average ERA of 3.65. Liriano continues to be the best starter we have, with a 6-2 record, an ERA of 2.89, and a K:BB ratio of roughly 3:1.

Next week we finish up the series against the Angels, with our eyes on the 4 game sweep with a game left to go. We then begin some interleague play in Colorado (26-23) and Cincinnati (18-27).

Boy, Frankie Liriano has really rebounded from Tommy John surgery, huh? Johan Who!?

Great start so far, hope you can continue the success.

I agree. The team is looking real nice. Don't worry about comments on your dynasty. You are getting plenty of hits. And yours is one in a handful I look for when I sign on to the board. I like the move for Francouer. He should be a solid player for you. Also good luck in the draft. The first one is very important.

Re: The end of one era in Minnesota, and the beginning of another

    May 23, 2008
Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim (23-25) @ Minnesota Twins (29-19)
    Twins 11 over Angels 7
    WP: Dennys Reyes - IP 2BB 2K (2-1)
    LP: Chris Bootcheck - 2/3IP 2H 2BB 3ER (1-1)

We managed to complete the four game sweep, despite a terribe start by Boof. Boof went 6 innings allowing 6 runs, but the bullpen performed strong and the offense picked him up. Gomez went 2-5 with two runs, two RBI's, and three steals. Casilla had only one hit, but knocked him 3 runners despite that. Delmon went 3-4 with an RBI, and even Nick Punto went 2-3 with a walk and three runs.

    May 24, 2008
    Minnesota Twins (30-19) @ Colorado Rockies (26-23)
    Rockies 6 over Twins 3
    WP: Aaron Cook - 8IP 5H 3BB 2ER 6K (4-4)
    LP: Scott Baker - 4IP 8H 2BB 5ER 3K (7-4)
    SV: Manuel Corpas (14)

A bit of a tough luck loss here, as we had a pretty good amount of baserunners, just couldn't get many of them home. Gomez, Casilla, Young, Mauer, and Francouer all collected one hit, and Gomez got an RBI. Kubel also collected a pinch hit single and an RBI.

    May 25, 2008
    Minnesota Twins (30-20) @ Colorado Rockies (27-23)
    Rockies 6 over Twins 5
    WP: Ubaldo Jimenez - 6IP 5H 5BB 4ER 4K (2-4)
    LP: Juan Rincon - IP 4H BB 4ER K (0-1)
    SV: Manuel Corpas (15)

A rough loss here. Ricky Barrett turned in a strong start in place of Livan Hernandez, but Rincon imploded and blew it for him. Gomez and Casilla each went 2-5 with a steal, and Casilla got an RBI. Mauer went 0-2 with two walks and two runs. Craig Monroe collected a two run, pinch hit, single. Mike Lamb hit a home run.

    May 26, 2008
    Minnesota Twins (30-21) @ Colorado Rockies (28-23)
    Rockies 6 over Twins 5
    WP: Brian Fuentes - 1 1/3IP (1-1)
    LP: Joe Nathan - 1/3IP 3H 2ER BSV (1-1)

We nearly avoided the sweep, but fell due to Joe Nathan's first blown save of the season. Livan Hernandez pitched 8 innings, gave up 2 runs, and struck out 6. Mike Lamb went 2-3 with a walk, a homer, and three RBI's. Delmon Young went 2-4 with an RBI and a steal.

    May 27, 2008
    Minnesota Twins (30-22) @ Cincinnati Reds (21-28)
    Twins 9 over Reds 8
    WP: Francisco Liriano - 7 1/3IP 8H 2BB 5ER 7K (7-2)
    LP: Josh Fogg - 5 2/3IP 8H 6ER 4K (2-4)
    SV: Joe Nathan (17)

Liriano's stat line is deceiving. He came in to pitch the 8th inning but allowed a couple baserunners, got an out, but then turned it over to Ricky Barrett, who promptly allowed a home run with the inherited runners from Liriano on base. Jeff Francouer went 2-3 with two runs, and two RBI's, Delmon Young went 2-5 with two steals, and Adam Everett hit his first homer of the year, a three run bomb.

    May 28, 2008
    Minnesota Twins (31-22) @ Cincinnati Reds (21-29)
    Reds 6 over Twins 4
    WP: Matt Belisle - 6 1/3IP 8H BB 4ER 4K (4-2)
    LP: Boof Bonser - 5IP 9H 6ER 6K (4-6)
    SV: Francisco Cordero (12)

Boof may be on the fast track to losing his spot in the rotation if I can find an adequate replacement. Hes 0-4 in his last 5 starts, and the one start he didn't lose he lucked out against the Angels and his ERA has climbed almost 3 runs this month. Justin Morneau came back in this game and knocked a two run homer for his only hit of the game. Gomez went 2-4 with a steal, and Jason Kubel collected another pinch hit RBI single.

    May 28, 2008
    Minnesota Twins (31-23) @ Cincinnati Reds (22-29)
    Reds 3 over Twins 2
WP: Francisco Cordero - IP BB K (2-4)
    LP: Jesse Crain - 1 2/3IP 2H ER 2K (3-1)

We managed to go to extras in this one, but Jesse Crain gave up a walkoff solo shot to Jay Bruce in the 10th inning with two outs. Baker threw a solid game, going 6 innings, allowing only 2 runs, and striking out 3. Joe Mauer got his first homer of the season, and Morneau went hitless but earned two walks.

    May 29, 2008

Off day for us, things I would normally reports here will go in the subsequent monthly reports.

    May 30, 2008
    Arizona Diamondbacks (25-29) @ Minnesota Twins (31-24)
    Diamondbacks 8 over Twins 6
    WP: Doug Davis - 5IP 10H BB 6ER 4K (5-4)
    LP: Livan Hernandez - 3IP 9H 2BB 7ER 2K (4-3)
    SV: Brandon Lyon (12)

Man, we've really hit a snag lately, these are teams we should be beating. In any case, Youn went 3-4 with 3 RBI's, Monroe went 2-5, Gomez went 2-4 with an RBI, and Casilla went 2-3 with two runs, an RBI, and a steal.

Re: The end of one era in Minnesota, and the beginning of another

    May Review

    GM Analysis/Feeling:

Extremely mixed feelings about this month. At time we've looked like a team that can contend with the heavyweights, but at times we've looked like a 3rd place team at best. We were extremely inconsistent this month, we'd win 2 then lose 2 or 3, then win 4, we weren't consistent at any time this month. We also made a bad habit of losing to the teams we should be beating, but handling the teams we need to beat like we're defending Champs. We nearly swept our division leaders, at at one point shortly after were tied for first in the division, but shortly after got swept by the sub-.500 Rockies and had two of three taken from us by the Reds, to drop to 4 games back of Cleveland and lost the outright Wild Card lead, and now tie with the Tigers. If we're going to stay in this for the long haul we need to beat the teams we should beat and continue to play well against the ones we need to beat.

    Offensive Report:

The offense was better this month, despite Morneau going down for two weeks of the month. Francouer provided us with a huge offensive boost, especially early on when he was hitting nearly .500 as a Twin. He regressed to a somewhat human level of production, and has hit .308, with a .904 OPS and 5 homers as a Twin. Delmon Young slumped a little early this month, but he got his average back up to .285 and leads the team with 49 RBI's. Gomez still isn't hitting that well, and only has an OPS of .624, but hes raised his average by about 60 points in the past two weeks and leads both leagues in steals with 24 (to only 2 caught stealing). Jason Kubel has also shown hes worth his weight as a hitter, hitting .279 with 10 homers and an .880 OPS this season. Morneau is still leading the team in batting, at .314, and playing great defense, but hes hitting for almost no power. Through these first two months of the season he only has 3 homers with a .442 slugging percent, he missed two weeks, but you would still expect the power numbers to be better for someone who hit 31 homers last season, and 34 the year before that.

Hitter of the Month: RF Jeff Francouer - (as a Twin) .308 batting average, .390 on base percent, .514 slugging percent, .904 OPS, 5 homers, 17 RBI's, 3 steals

    Pitching Report:

Outside of Liriano all the starters came back down to earth, as I expected. Boof's ERA climbed by about 3 runs over the course of this month, from the mid-2.00 range to 5.17, and Baker's ERA climbed from about 2.75 to 3.99. Liriano is making fans in Minnesota forget all about Johan Santana though. Liriano is 7-2, with a 3.19 ERA, and an AL leading 81 K's, in 79 innings pitched. Joe Nathan had been a machine until he blew his first save, with an ERA of around 0.40 until the implosion. Outside of him, however, the bullpen has been unreliable at best. Livan threw two complete game shutouts in the month, but has been extremely inconsistent on the month as well. We've had a lot of difficulty finding a reliable #5 starter in light of Humber's injury, and even switched to a 4 man rotation for a few weeks after the injury. We've rotated through Jesse Crain, Nick Blackburn, and Brian Duensing will make his first start in that role in early June.

Pitcher of the Month: Francisco Liriano - 7-2, 3.19 ERA, 81 strikeouts, .234 batting average against, 79 innings pitched, 29BB

    Injury Report:

SP Phil Humber - Broken forearm, out 33 days

    Down on the farm:

Re: The end of one era in Minnesota, and the beginning of another

    League Update

    Notable Injuries:

SP Jake Peavy (SDP) - Shoulder separation, out 20 days

    Notable Trades:

Cleveland Indians and Kansas City Royals on May 16th, 2008

    Cleveland Indians acquire:

    LF Mark Teahen (82)

    Kansas City Royals acquire:

    C Kelly Shoppach (75/76)
    1B Ryan Garko (80)

A pretty even trade here. Teahen is the best player in the trade, but hes almost a push with Garko, and KC acquires a good defensive minded catcher, that a young team like KC really needs. I'll call it a push, but if I had to pick who wins this trade I'd say KC.

Los Angeles Dodgers and Baltimore Orioles on May 17th, 2008

    Los Angeles Dodgers acquire:

    SP Daniel Cabrera (86)

    Baltimore Orioles acquire:

    P Javy Guerra (68/83)
    P James McDonald (64/85)
    P Bryan Morris (59/81)

I really like this trade on both sides. Cabrera is a solid major league pitcher, who can be dominant at times, and Baltimore got some pretty good pitching prospects, something it inexplicably lacks. I'm gonna give this one to Baltimore.

    Milestones:

Ken Griffey Jr. (CIN) collects his 600th home run on May 6th, 2008
Manny Ramirez (BOS) collects his 500th home run on May 8th, 2008
Frank Thomas (TOR) collects his 1500th run on May 28th, 2008
Bobby Abreu (NYY) collects his 300th steal on May 29th, 2008
Bobby Abreu (NYY) collects his 1000th RBI on May 30th, 2008
Richie Sexson (SEA) collects his 300th home run on May 31st, 2008

    Notable FA's/Contract Extensions:

CL Huston Street (OAK) signs a 3 year 5,100,000 contract extension on May 25th 2008

Go Manny! That remind me I have to sign up Huston Street this year! I hope the team can gel a little and get a little more consistent for you! I want to see the twins and mets WS so you can take down Johan!

It's good to see that you're tied for the Wild Card. Awesome job!

Although, if I were you, I'd want to focus on winning the division. That way, you get the AL West champion in the ALCS. Those teams look dreadful.
