    OJ Mayo

Supposedly OJ Mayo took gifts of cash, food a tv and other stuff while at USC

    http://sports.espn.go.com/ncb/news/story?id=3390695

More importantly who cares? and Is this really news?

The only reason he was at USC was 'cause of NBAs dumb one-and-done rule. Was there any reason for him not to take these gifts?

Agreed......if there's somebody willing to pay him millions he should be able to take it.

I think it is more of a reflection on the school that anything else. First Bush, now Mayo...seems like there might be a little trend going on here. I mean can we really think that no one thought something was weird about a college freshman having a huge flat screen television in his dorm room? His DORM ROOM for god's sake.

My big problem with this sort fo thing has always been with the schools as well. I understand the whole thing about college sports supposedly being "semi-pro", but let's get real. The schools are certainly profiting from their students being athletes, and with that sort of money floating around the games I dont' blame students for taking a cut.

In my opinion, the schools really shouldn't be profiteering from sports as much as they are. But, since college sports are popular, they do need to charge for something. So, in my opinion, they ought to pay their athletes some of that profit. Sports ptrograms ought to be an actual curriculum as well, in my opinion. For many of the players, that's what their going to scholl for anyway.

I'm not sure but I think the NHL does this.
    It does.

The free scholarship is a giving the student athlete a part of the profits.
True... for those who do receive a scolarship, which is the vast majority of players that we're talking about here. Really though, in the face of millions of dollars in profits for the schools, that's hardly enough. You don't see rookie players signing $50,000/year contracts, after all.

I actually agree with your idea on letting them enter the draft, and then allowing them to continue attending school if they wish.

The reason the NHL allows this, though, has nothing to do with them being more forward thinking, or anything like that...if they didn't allow it, all of the good players would have foregone college programs and gone the junior hockey wrote, which would have basically killed college hockey.

    Yup.

I think that is a good idea about letting players be drafted and continue in college. The only problem is that (in the NHL anyway) the players don't actually sign until their done with college, and I don't see any teams in other sports being willing to sign players and allow them to continue to play in college "out of their control". Why should they pay a player for playing for someone else, after all? There's the risk factor there as well.

That's true. If I'm running a pro franchise, I don't want to give Jr. a multimillion dollar contract, only to watch him blow out his knee in the Sweet 16. Perhaps some sort of arrangement could be worked out where a player receives a stipend?

Actually, I remember reading an idea years and years ago in a sports mag, where you don't pay them to play, but they get a piece of the merch sales. This is where the NCAA really cleans up (well, this and being allowed to remain a non-taxed entity, which is ridiculous)...they and the school get 100% of the money from jerseys, posters, and everything else that's sold. I think the player should get a piece of it, and another portion should be pooled and shared amongst all of the players. Actually, to take it further, you could involve the school's marketing classes in the project, and get them some reaol world experience.

Yea, I agree. I like the stipend idea, as that's basically what I was saying in the first place anyway. The whole non-taxed entity thing just kils me as well... as anti-taxation as I am, I have a hard time saying anyone should be taxed, but their being given an unfair tax break, in my view.
