    Add a Stat: VORP

How hard would it be to add this to the player stats/cards? I think it'd make it much easier for players to determine who's really contributing to the team and who's taking up space.

Plus, now that the AI is potentially looking at stats in making decisions, a VORP value would help it determine how valuable a player is TO THEIR TEAM (rather than just in general.)

Here's a quick and dirty definition:
    VORP

    And a little more detail:
    VORP
    Retired Dynasties I'm Proud of
To Rule in Kansas City Part I and Part II (Kansas City Royals 1969-73, Hall of Fame)
Cardinal Sins (St. Louis Cardinals 1976-78) and it's sequel:
    Diverting Destiny (Montreal Expos 1994)
Script for my Requiem (New Orleans Blues (fictional) 1954)

Agreed. Clay made a poll a while back asking which stats people would like to see. The options included VORP, WARP, and Win Shares, among others. I guess nothing came of that.

LOL, I'd never really thought about that! While a lot of batting average beyond home runs is luck, there definitely is skill involved. The stat definitely would favor power hitters and walking machines over guys like Ichiro who just get hits. I'm surprised the stat never developed in the A's system as it seems like it sums up exactly what they look for in a batter the way it's explained in Moneyball.

I guess its because ERA has proven to be volatile from year to year, where AVG and OBP really aren't too much.

I'd use RICE, but only in the way I use DICE; understanding it doesn't tell the entire story and other stats need to be looked at along with it.

The name's a little silly but that actually sounds like a really good idea..if BABIP is constant for pitchers, wouldn't it be the same w/ batters, too?

Fair enough, Yankee. You happen to have the formulas for VORP/WARP/Win Shares handy? If so I could indeed plug it into an output.

Batters have more stable BABIP's than pitchers, so let's cut out the nonsensical talk about it, nevermind that it's completely unrelated to the thread topic.

I figured you were being sarcastic, but it actually doesn't sound like a bad stat.

I'm already working on a spreadsheet that will calculate Estimated Win Shares from Bill James's book, Win Shares. Of course, you'll have to know how to use Excel to get the best use out of the final result.

I'll post it when I get it finished.

Next you will want customizable stat headings that let you enter in stat formulas of your own devising. Not that that would be a bad thing, although presumably a few years down the priority chain.

I suggested that exact thing a while back. I don't really feel like looking up the thread though,

    Those formulas look intimidating :X

Since pet has Win Shares (Good! That one looked even worse), this weekend I'll see if I can take a swing at VORP. It SEEMS straight forward enough.

    Re: Add a Stat: VORP

Yeah, you just need to calculate the player's Marginal Lineup Value (MLV) and then it's straight forward from there. Pitcher VORP is really simply - just compare Run Average (RA) to the replacement level.
