27 pitchers on the 2 25 man rosters

In case you did not see it, for the Brewers-Cards game, the Brewers had 14 pitchers on their 25 man roster and the Cards had 13. 3 bench players for Milwaukee and 4 for St Louis. So, of course, both team's starting pitchers went 7 innings and a PH scored the winning run. Jeff Suppan pinch-bunted.

I don't think it is very uncommon for NL teams to have larger pitching staffs than AL teams. Normally 12-13 is about average if I'm not mistaken for NL teams they have a higher amount because there are more pitching changes due to pinch hitting being more frequent to replace the pitcher.

Right now, all other NL teams have 12 pitchers, except the Dodgers, which have 11.

    In the AL: 3 have 11, 9 have 12, and 2 have 13

11 and 12 are the most common, 10 and 13 are relatively rare (and are usually only for very short periods of time), and 14 is basically unheard of.

Even Tony LaRussa usually only carries 12 pitchers.

What was the back story to all of this? Were there injured players or something?
I don't watch the NL that often (aside from catching some Cubs games), so I hadn't really heard about this.

Cards: three relievers unavailable Monday, and at least two of them still on the shelf for Tuesday

Brewers: injuries (Sheets injured but not on DL), extra inning games, overuse (I think Gagne was used 4 days in a row), and wanted another lefty against the Cardinals (Chris Duncan and Rick Ankiel) and the Phillies (Ryan Howard, Chase Utley, and Geoff Jenkins)

Yep, and when he got shelled in his 4th straight appearance, Ned Yost blamed it on a 'wet mound.' Sure Ned, had nothing to do with you using an injury-prone pitcher for four consecutive days. Ned Yost has a glaring weakness in his ability to manage a bullpen. Maybe Doug Melvin decided "let's just give him a huge number of relievers. He'll have to get lucky at some point."

It may be true that Ned Yost is bad at managing his bullpen, but what would you expect him to say (to the media, anyway)? "I've been screwing up recently. Sorry." ?
    Yea, right.

Oh, I didn't expect him to actually admit a mistake. Just saying.

That Gagne sure is worth the money. It's a shame we Sox fans miss out on him this year...

(I want Kason Gabbard back, that was one Theo trade I could've done without)

Both teams had same 25 man rosters Monday (and went into extra innings). Suppan, Looper, and Wainwright pinch hit. Due to an injury to Izturis (HBP on elbow by Gagne), Pujols played 2B and LaRue 1B.

    21. The Milwaukee Brewers haven't made the playoffs since 1982. What's the latest move that indicates that streak won't end in 2008?
    (a) Carrying a 14-man pitching staff and only three bench players
    (b) Carrying a 14-man pitching staff, leading to Jeff Suppan pinch-hitting twice in a week
    (c) Carrying a 14-man pitching staff but still using Eric Gagne four straight games, resulting in a blown save in the fourth game
    (d) Carrying a 14-man pitching staff but still bringing in lefty killer Brian Shouse to face three straight righty hitters
    (e) Carrying a 14-man pitching staff, even if one of them (Derrick Turnbow) is so wild the manager never uses him
    (f) Carrying a 14-man pitching staff, leading to the team trading Gabe Gross (.743 career OPS) when Tony Gwynn Jr. (.643 career OPS) came off the DL
    (g) All of the above

13? 14 pitchers? are they insane?

I can't see any justification for having that many pitchers unless you as a manager want no ability to change any position player except for injury.

Meanwhile, is changing pitchers that often worth what you lose in the bench players? I think 11 is plenty.

When I manage by myself, I find myself struggling to use more than 10 effectively.
