Although vBulletin is made to handle 500,000+ posts like we have. It was never built to handle all the forums and threads we have. So it's been a constant fight to keep it stable without slowing down or losing posts. I'll feel bad if we have to trim some threads or even () split BMO and Sports Mogul into 2 forums. But it's better than having a forum that doesn't work. If that means you lose all incentive to be active, that's a bummer.

I know. I've seen bigger bulletin boards. But they don't have forums that are hooked into BMO. I'll make the best choice I can with the resources we have. I know post counts are important, but they aren't sacrosanct. In fact, with the time we spend umpiring fights about post counts and post padding, I sometimes wonder if we might be better off if there were no post counts at all.

I was just having a little fun at your expense is all, since I knew that you'd get kind of pissed about it. I didn't say a word about it to Clay or Dee or anyone at all until after I did it, when HGM PM'ed me laughing and asking how long I was going to keep the threads deleted. There's no real need to get defensive... If you want the "lead", go right ahead, that doesn't bother me in the least!

Yeah, that's really my only "problem" with post-padding. I used to do it sometimes, but now the only thread I post on that really qualifies as "padding" is Word Assocation just because...I think it's a fun thing to do. But as both you and Bobby said, the practical use for post counts is to inform users how active of a poster you are, and generally, the more active posters are the more experienced ones on the forums. Post counts that are filled with meaningless padding posts don't get across that information, since it's a mix of "legitimate" and "illegitimate" posts.

On the other forum I often frequent (forums.mtgsalvation.com), they have strict spam rules (as I think is needed for a forum of such a huge magnitude), and they have separate forums for one-word type threads such as Word Association where posts are not counted towards your post count. Combine the strict spam rules and the fact that only forums with meaningful discussion add to post count, the post count on that site gives you meaningful information - how active AND productive the member truly is.

Of course, for a relatively small (in comparison) forum such as ours, I don't really care one way or the other if there are post counts, meaningful or otherwise.

    Just some food for thought.

    heh

hey, in my own defense, at least I was (mostly) messing with people who could a) see what I was doing and b) do something about it...

lol <- for real. I chuckled a bit, at least.

I do like the whole idea of not counting posts in certain forums... and then putting all of the "post padding" threads there. That would at least get rid of the blatent post padding threads while still allowing for the game threads like word association, as HGM mentioned.

I really like the idea behind the changing post counts to titles. The whole count thing simply lends itself to abuse (which is a term I'm using very loosely, since there has always been acceptance of post padding here).

I'm probably opening a bigger can of worms here but, I personally would prefer it if the individual BMO league subforums were split off into a separate forum (Basically, the entire BMO: Leagues forum and it's subforums). Really, their already a separate space anyway, with their own rules and customs. Additionally, if that were to happen, then people's user names on the BMO forums could be made to match their user names on BMO itself (and forum registration there could also be enforced), which would help BMO users. The other BMO forums (general discussion, sugestions, bug reports, etc...) should stay here though.

Remember when I post padded in the "Top 30 Posters"-or whatever it was called-and one of you guys (Mods I mean) closed the thread becasue of it?

oh,I wasn't talking about getting rid of post counts, but actually having user titles (not edited) but it won't say Register User, it will say "fan"...ect.

I actually think the whole BMO game should be on a seperate forum...nothing like trash talking, swearing name calling that a perspective customer looks at too which the forum moderators (HGM, ohms_law, Robinhoodnic, and myself can do) can't do anything because the league commissioners own that forum.

I also think that the General questions, and ect...should be on a different forum as well, or maybe just hidden and only accessible by a link...for example, form the main page, you click on BMO, then forums...ect. Not clicking on the general forums for BMO...ect..

    that is about it

For those who consider post counts a record of how active you are, wouldn't it be posts per day that you pay attention to? You know, that number next to your total posts on your profile.

well yes and no, for example, I had 300 post from 2002-2004... HostonGM had underneith 100 post for over a year....and ohms_law has averaged around 20 post per day since he came here....

from 2004- current, I have been probably the 3rd most active poster as the current trend says, but from 2003-6, Michealg123 was the most active by a large margin, He was averaging 40 post per day....

That is the problem. It's always posts/days since you joined the forum, and that's just not a very meaningful metric. Posts/day in the last week or month would be more meaningful.

Yeah. I joined the forum about 5 and a half years ago when I first got Baseball Mogul 2003 (wow I can't believe it's been that long...), but didn't post that much until 2005, and even then, I didn't really start posting until the next year.
