    Bobby Cox is a genious

I just read this and I love it.

So Resop, a converted outfielder, comes in to start the inning to pitch against 3 righties. He lets 2 on and gets the next guy out. Now, there's one lefty and then more righties. So instead of burning 2 pitchers, Bobby Cox brings a lefty Ring in to pitch and moves Resop to leftfield. He gets a strikeout, Resop comes back in, they bring and outfielder in off the bench.

Absolute genious and a great way to use you bullpen.

This got me to thinking. Imagine if a team found 2 pitchers: a lefty and a righty; who could both play the outfield and hit decently. They could just switch to get the right matchup. That'd be awesome.

Maybe you could have a whole lineup of pitcher-fielders. I'm thinking you get David McCarty back from retirement, get Rick Ankiel from St Louis...get Edgar Martinez from the Red Sox minors...

How would warmups work tho? With no time in the bullpen, do they get more warmup tosses? If not, wouldn't that put them at a disadvantage?

Martinez? Formerly of Seattle? Is he trying a comeback that I didnt hear about underneath my rock?

No there is a different Martinez, a pitcher, in the Red Sox system.

If I was Arizona I'd get Micah Owings some positional innings. That dude can hit.

I have always liked Cox as a manager, and I think that this idea was of great strategic intelligence. Is he the longest serving manager with one team currently? He must be.

Whitey Herzog did this in '86, '87 and '89. I believe Bobby Valentine did it also.

They will need him to perform and I would expect he will have a decent season,

Lou Pinella did it I think with Jeff Nelson when he first came to Seattle, he played a style similar to the NL Ball...even thou Lou has always been an AL guy...
