Not a bad deal at all then. The Red Sox signed John Olerud to a minor league contract in 2005 and he ended up being a great backup. (I always knew Olerud still had it. It was because of the hitting coachs that he start struggling so much. I hate Bavasi for releasing him. )

Yeah, this deal has no risk, but, it's just...funny. Olerud was 36, and had an outstanding season 3 years prior to the signing, a solid season two years before, and an okay season the year before...

Gonzalez last appeared in a game 3 years ago. His last productive half-season was 5 years ago..
