    Roster Glitch... Retired Rookies

If you start on the 1962 season, Bill Freehan enters as a 20 year old retired catcher after a few games in '61... wrong...

If you find other players absent from their team season start historicals post away.

BM2K8... Willie Horton did NOT die in 2003... he's still working for the Tigers...

Is that a default value? In other words, do you get that if you start a new game in 2007 or so?

If you've been playing during Horton's career, then it assigns everyone alive a random death date.

Many more... Nolan Ryan, Les Cain...

Try starting up the 1967 season... Nolan Ryan and Les Cain are listed as retired after their rookie years (as are erroneously shown) with Bobby Murcer and others...

This problem affects all players with game start seasons of no Big League experience following their rookie years...

Big problem here guys. No way to manually fix it that I can find.

I missed this thread somehow, earlier. This isn't actually a bug, it's more of a design flaw. The Lahman database only includes entries for players for years where they have MLB playing time, so there are many players who are missed if you start in the "wrong" year. It's something that Clay is aware of, and it's on the 'to do' list of things to change, but it's not really the highest priority. It's annoying, but it's not really a game buster.

    Not a gamebuster?

Sorry ohms... it is for me.

Look at the facts. Start any year you want, go to sortable stats and you'll see 50 to 150 young ballplayers (ages 18 or 19 to 24 or 25) that have disappeared down the memory hole. A good number of those had future big league experience, many became stars... are you telling me this doesn't matter?

No way am I manually entering all the data needed to override this major goof either each time...

You guys bit off more than you can chew. Instead of worrying about garbage like females in baseball you should have paid attention to the real nuts and bolts.

That's my opinion (as a statman and QE as well as buyer of your product), and if you feel I'm wrong, just go ahead and keep working on the next half finished update.

i agree with the "women in baseball" option

my question is who pitched that idea & then who seconded it?

    Re: Roster Glitch... Retired Rookies

Well, first I disagree in not calling it a bug. It IS a bug. It is a SEVERE bug.

That said... I don't see what can be done at this time.

As explained, all this data is imported from Lahman. Lahman (I'm guessing) only tracks Major League careers, so in a given year if so and so didn't play... they don't show up.

The only suggestion that I could make would be the following:

We know BM can 'look through' prior years when setting up a dynasty, because it has the option of loading retired players.

Now in BM05 there was an option to "Look ahead." I have no idea what that means. I suspect it was an early version of 'Simulation' mode where a player's actual career was loaded for overall/peak projection.

IF so - when loading BM09, could the program compile a list of "suspected" retirees, project forward say ten years, and if the player 'reappears' in a later database have him added back in with his last known team?

    In other words:
    Start a game in 1967
Ryan shows up as a retiree, last played with the 66 Mets
"Project forward" - he's found on the 68 Mets
    Re-add him to the Mets?

    Yup...
That's just got to be done, is all (or something like it). AFAIK, it just hasn't been at the top of the priority list.

By the by, using an imperative sentence on people you have no control or influence over tends to backfire. You were better off before adding that last sentence.

It's generally sufficient to say "This is a game killer for me. I believe it's an easy fix. I really need to see this in BM09 or I would not want to buy the game." Trying to give directives when you have no way to enforce your will (other than your wallet. Wah.) generally makes people want to resist.

Wasn't aiming that at you, Yankee Hater. My post was to remind people to concentrate on the issue & not let it get petty (which it so often can). If you'd rather have it go that route, I can sit back & read that flame-war just as easily. I don't think it helps the conversation, though.
